Vantha
For those that don't know, Ekdromoi were hoplites lightlier armored than the others. They could break away from the slow phalanx formation for example to attack skirmishers. They wore hardly any body armor in order to increase their speed and mobility. From the research I have done, Ekdromoi champions seem to have been in the game a long, long time ago (as javelineers for some reason even though they definitely weren't javelineers). What happened to them? I can't find them in the game files. Did I miss them? I know that the SpecificName of the Skiritai is 'Ekdromos Skiritis'. But (from the research I've done for the encyclopedia) the Skiritai's role in battle still unclear to this day. It's not proven they fought as Ekdromoi. Plus, the Skiritai are swordsmen. While, of course, like the other Hoplites, Ekdromoi also carried swords, it was not their main weapon. And they are not faster than hoplites. Actual Ekdromoi should do the same damage as hoplites, have weaker armor and a higher speed.
alre
If I remember well, swordmen used to be faster than spearmen, and skiritais were given swords to reflect their more-mobile role of ekdromoi. but I could be confused. Not a bad assumption. My belief is it's because the civ already had a spearman, but no swordsman, so the Ekdromos being a swordsman filled the role. I do not antogonize a fast hoplite in the game. Though we had a fast spearman in A24 (the Gual fanatic), it wasn't used by players. The game does often not make fast infantry worthwhile. If the unit would be introduced, give it statistics to make sure that it is viable.

I don't really myself how much players actually use the the Gaul fanatics. However, the high damage, low armor (and a higher speed), seem just right for Ekdromoi.
Grautvornix
Actually, I do like the Gaul fanatics as they are available realtively early in game at relatively low cost. Maybe it is not a good strategy, but it is just what I do when I play Gauls.
Lion.Kanzen
I have the strong impulse that while bb_ creates the second attack patch, certain units, not all or the majority, just some , have a dual role. That they can change weapons. I put it here because I plan to open the topic.
