  1. The Roman Legionary was a mediocre by himself, but their real strength came from numbers- the Roman Army was built on formations and teamwork that just didnt exist in many other civs of the time, like the Celts, where everyman fights for himself.

So if theres a fight between a single Hoplite and a single Legionary, the Hoplite is gonna win (although the Hoplite's long spear will be useless if the Legionary gets close enough- then a quick thrust of his gladius can end the battle)

Well, Roman Legionary was rather strong. Romans won Punnic wars by their soldiers, not ships. And onboard they couldn't use their formations.

Hoplite would loose in fight with Legionary for sure as i was already explained.

I had an idea, but none seemed to be interested. What if Hoplites (and other pikemen) had also minimal range with their primary weapon. If Hoplites were in deeper formations, they would be very strong when facing enemy from front, but if attacked from more directions, they would loose. Also one to one wouldn't be good to use them.

This is IMHO very close to reality, because Alexander introduced cavalry to protect rear and flanks. When other generals later concentrated only in Phalanx formation and ceased to use cavalry they were often deffeated.

    What do you think?

  2. Hi.

I want to learn 3d modelling in mentioned progrsmms. Could someone send me some models as examples, please. I'm interested in prfemade figures of infantryman and horseman (with horse).

I'd like to learn to do it as I want to make mod depicting Medieval era and don't want to start from nothing (I know that longest ways are started with first step, but little boost to the beginninng won't hurt).

I already have name for that mod: For Honour and Glory. What do you think about it?

    Thank you very much.

  3. That battle was pretty ahistorical. Romans were usually outnumbered, so if they would break ranks, like in that film, they would loose advantage they had in equipment (gladius - deadlly weapon in pressure of battle, but in personal 1 to 1 combat ot was bad, because it was too short to swing with) and they were trained to hold ranks. It was expected, that every soldier can fully fight for 15 mins, after that time fighting line was replaced by another and rested. BTW, in Gladiator I didn't see any Roman to throw Pillum.

  4. Happy Canadian Men's Team finally got a win but it wasn't enough of a victory to prove them ready for the elimination rounds.

Yeah. They were simly lucky in first third. Next two thirds they were beaten so heavily, that they barely managed to withstand it. Loss with Russians was inevitable. Russians overclassed them as well as Czechs did in those last two thirds.

  5. Hah! You Canadians are always so sure about your hockey gold.. Just watch it -- you'll be SO disappointed when Finland takes the gold from right under your nose! :P

Well, I dislike Ruthu (I'm typing it bad I think) for what he did it to Jagr. Shame is, that whole team seemed to appreciate such action. I'm dissappointed about it. I thought, that Olympic Games are about fair play, not slaughter. I wouldn't be surprised if Canadians would do it, as they are well known to enjoy fighting rather than playing fair, especially when loosing, but Finnish!?

  6. Why Some Vendors Refuse to Open Source Drivers

BTW, Yes GNOME is aimed toward simplicity. There was some flame with Linus about it. Dnas is right. I'd like to have switch basic/advanced, too. IMO best thing of (K)Ubuntu is, that it takes exellent Debian distro to "mainstream". But after installation of (K)Ubuntu, you can add Debian packages repository and install any other WM. I use Debian and I like and use FVWM most.

About NTFS, its support in Linux is quite limited as M$ didn't reveal it to allow users to develop drivers to support it fully.

  7. I haven't played it. But I know something about HOI 1. I can't say taht it is bad. But in HOI, there is no battle AFAIK. There is only strategic map. I said it badly, maybe MTW isn't best conquer the world game, but combination of strategy and tactics is IMHO unique to the Total War saga. And I'd like to have it implemented in 0AD (with less numbers of troops , lets say about 200 units on each side on the battlefield, rest would be as reinforcements, so when you attack region with 800 troops, you'd be able to use only 200 ofthem, rest would be used as reinforcements arriving when some of those 200 initial unist are killed).

  8. The best CTW RTS are IMHO Total War series (i really love Medieval - Total War, modders have made this game just awesome, I slightly participated in development of Fall of Rome mod, I have never played game which would introduce me to this period better). I'd like to have option to play it this way (like some switch to choose style, like MTW or AoK or RoN).

  9. Well, from what I've read, Carthaginian North Africa was inhabited by 750 000 people while Latium by 6 milions before Punnic Wars.

But Romans were later Professional soldiers, while in barbarin tribes was every man warrior. So, my idea is to give Romans villagers and stronger military units and barbarians will be all CS.
