  1. Hi.

I was googling hard to find what does SPQR mean. Answers differ quite much.

I don't mean those cheerful things like "Sentiment Prevents Queens' Removal" and so.

    I've found ideas like:

Senatus Populusque Romanum (but what does Q stand for? I'm not likely to believe it that it is in word PopulusQue)

which means Senate of Roman People (I think)

    Senatus Populus Que Roma

Senate, People and Rome (which fits me best)

    and other I don't recall.

What do you think it is?

    Just curious.

  2. Where can I get these cool desktop mods? Make sure it's freeware. :P

Well, you perhaps have Windows in mind.

Unfortunatelly for you, it is Linux I and Dnas speak about.

Hey, King Tutankhamun, your desktop is rather nice, too.

  3. Just wanted to show you my final desktop.

  4. "Greek hoplites wielded 8 to 10-foot spears with a counterbalancing butt-spike nicknamed a “lizard-killer”. If a Greek lost the head of the spear he could reverse the shaft and fight with the butt."

Wasn't main advantage of such spear the fact that when enemy fell on the ground, Greek could finish him with it without having to reverse it? Sarissas were used in such manner, but Greek spear?

But name lizard-killer would fit this purpose well.

    Exellent article anyway.

  5. btw, for the sake of a good and blanced gameplay, i would not nessessarily FORCE a Roman Player (for example) to repeat the failures of history -

if there is automatic defeat when a possible persian enemy can use its cavalry it is probaly historical accurate (at least if you want to replay the battle of 'Karrhae' or whatever it was)

but it is probably not good for gameplay

historical accuracy is good, but gameplay is more important

You don't have to. If Romans take Ballistas and mangonesl, they have pretty much firepower to respond to persian horse archers. Romans can aso catch Persian horse archers in area which doesn't fit persian tactics. IMHO Romans didn't loose to Persians everytime.

I just wanted to say, that Romans won't be that versatile. As their battle style was rather uniform.

Infantry formed core of army, Light cavalry (not numerous) was used for scouting, some archers, more Velites and Catapults and Ballista. Perhaps around 50-100 AD should appear Cataphractarii and Clibanarii. But Cavalry woudn't be strong in Roman army indeed.

  6. Well, Roman weakness will be definitely in cavalry and not superior archery.

As core of army was created by native Roman heavy infantry, which should be strong indeed, and archers and cavalry was provided by roman allies.

Roman cavalry was used mainly for scouting or pursuing fleeing enemy. BTW, lack of good cavalry caused roman deffeat at Karrhae, because Romans weren't able to respond to Persian bowfire and heavy cavalry.

So, I think, that roman tactics will be attack on open field (to use formations), but not that open to prevent effective use of enemy cavalry. They will also use Ballista and catapults to compensate weaker archery. I think, that roman unique skill should be ability to build military camps (perhaps some improvements by additional work could be possible to further improve defences) to further compensate lower firepower (disadvantage of being ellite assault infantry).

  7. I think that blog is a parody. Seriously, look at this one: http://shelleytherepublican.com/2006/04/eu...beral-hell.html I laughed so hard my side burst...

    Thanks for explanation.

Personally, I don't like this kind of jokes. When I posted link to video of dumb Americans, which weren't able to find countries on the map of the world, it wasn't taken well, too. Even if it was obvious, that those, who had good knowledge of the world were edited out.

  8. In for Part II :) Assuming you mean Teutons as Germanics in general, like the Suebi, Cherusci, Marcomanni, and Quadi and not just the Teutons who migrated with the Cimbri?

Well, I meant Germanic tribes in general. I don't want to underestimate WFG or something like this, but to make such great numbers of different tribes would only cause additional delay. BTW, I don't think that their equipment and fighting style differed so much to be worth making them as unique civs.

  9. The question that remains is: will we ever learn. As was stated, the US making new nuclear bombs will result in Russia making more, resulting in china making more, resulting in india making them (more?), resulting in pakistan making them, resulting in Iran CERTAINLY making them... *sigh*

    I have to agree.

    EDIT:

    today 20 years Tsjernobil...

    I know. Terrible memories.

  10. Yes. That's it.

American peace for these counties will cost lives of many people yet.

I'm not typing it to insult all americans, because many of them here are good people and I appreciate their suggestions and ideas ....

I just want to make people think about it.

I think, that something is wrong.

  11. Hi.

I've made php5 working on Apache2 and Linux (Debian/Sid) as module. I have a minor problem.

At http://php.net/echo is example of using echo and \n for new line.

But \n doesn't make newline for me. Did I mess something?

  12. Whoa, I made up that list months ago :D

I never meant for anyone to actualy consider it- talk to the actual 0ad historians instead; I'm just an amateur ;)

The real Latin names would be good, in which cae there would be no "Legionary", rather a Miles Legatus- but like Paul said, I dont think a Legionary qualifies as a Punic era soldier.

Right you are about Legionary. They most certainly didn't name them so.

Problem is, that I'm not sure which period is covered by 0AD as Roman army changed in time. So, perhaps there could be more periods in game (perhaps three - Early, Marian and Late?). Because Clibanarius was introduced by Hadrian AFAIK.

If I might suggest, if someone has Medieval: Total War - Viking Invasion, try mod Fall of Rome (http://rapidshare.de/files/5087854/Fall_of_Rome-3.0.exe.html). Its creator (with my minor help  ) has done cool job and provided numbers of cool units for Late Roman era. One of the best mods for MTW I've ever played. Really.

  13. Infantry Spearman- Triarius

    Infantry Swordsman- Hastatus

    Infantry Javelineer- Velite

    Infantry Archer- Longbowman

    Infantry Slinger- Slinger

    Cavalry Spearman- Lancearii

    Cavalry Swordsman- Cataphract

    Cavalry Javelineer- ?

    Cavalry Archer- Clibanarii

    Infantry Super Unit- Legionary

    Cavalry Super Unit- Equite

    Big Ship- Juggernaught

    Medium Ship- Trireme

    Small Ship- Galley

    Siege for Units- Ballista

    Siege for Buildings- Siege Tower

    Ram

    Priest

    Female Worker

    Trader

Just a question. Will it be possible to assign one unit to have two types of melee attack and civilian skills?

It would be needed for pikemen as pike was in close combat pretty useless, so they would switch to swords.

    I'd do it like this:

Infantry Spearman - Triarius - OK

Infantry Swordsman - Hastatus - OK (I miss Principle, though)

Infantry Javelineer - Velite - OK

Infantry Archer - Sagitarius - Longbowmen were Welsh invention IMHO

Infantry Slinger - Slinger - I don't like English name, but I don't know Latin equivalent

    Cavalry Spearman - Clibanarius

Cavalry Swordsman - Cataphract - Romans equipped all heavy cavalry with lances IMHO

    Cavalry Javelineer - ? - Equitus - I miss Light Cavalry

Cavalry Archer - Equitus Sagitarius? - IMHO Late Romans used horse archers, but in 0AD? What is singular from Equites? Equitus?

Infantry Super Unit - Marian Legionary?

Cavalry Super Unit - Roman cavalry was rather weak, co I don't know if they should have any.

Big Ship - One more row of oars, Quintireme?

    Medium Ship - Trireme

    Small Ship - Bireme

Siege for Units - Ballista, what about catapult?

Siege for Buildings - Siege Tower, Could be in Latin language?

Ram - Could be in Latin language?

Priest - What is function of Priest in game? Like in AoK?

Female Worker - Could be in Latin language?

Trader - Could be in Latin language?

Personally, I don't like English names of Latin units. About ships, they were named according rows of oars, so, two rows - Bireme, three -Trireme, one more -Quintireme (I'm not sure about this name).
