  1. As far as I know it's original (I found several trailers with it, but all post-fellowship).

But I can't really back that claim...

Yea, identifying music from trailers is quite a challenge, took me a LONG time until I found the source where the music in TTT trailer came from.

Right now I'm tracking down another theme, I heard first in Ghost in the Shell 2:Innocence trailer, but recently I downloaded a custom Halo movie trailer (edited halo footage and make it seem like a movie trailer) that uses sounds from Final Fantay: Spirits Within... near the end the theme from GitS2:I plays, so I think FF movie is my next step (just have to download the trailer to see if it's part of their trailer or if the Halo trailer cut it from somewhere else).

But yes, I agree... fellowship was exceptional. As was TTT, a shame that RotK didn't have a second trailer (both TTT and FotR it was the second trailer that was amazing)

  2. I have seen that one (own the game!) but I don't think it's on level with the WC3 one. Now, I'm denying the graphic detail is better (there's no question) and while WoW's trailer is ok... it doesn't hold that constant level of quality I expected from blizzard. WC3 also had some not so great movies, but it had like 7 movies.

  3. Trailers, I love them. More than the actual films. They touch something that films rarely touch, films kill. It's the expectation, the need. Basically it awakes desire.

I know many ppl hate trailers because they ruin the story, and to a certain degree I agree. But I still choose a good trailer that gives away a story than no trailer. I know, the film is what it is all about but to me the trailer is perfection. Rarely does a movie leave me as satistfied and excited about than a trailer.

Just wondering if there are others who love trailers as much as I do.

    My favorite trailers are:

    - Two Towers Trailer with the modified Clint Mansells "Summer Overture"

    - Underworld trailer!!

    - WarCraft III trailer (one with desert and snow shot, and "Call to Arms" music)

    - Alexander (this one at first I didn't like, it felt odd... but I grew to love it)

    - Fellowship of the Ring (final offical trailer, where they show Pippin dropping the bucket)

    - Harry Potter: Prisoner of Azkaban trailer

    - Both Spiderman 2 trailers, and Spiderman trailer

    - Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence trailer

    - Dungeon Siege II trailer

    - Halo 2 trailer

    - Jade Empire trailer

  4. Argalius I love your avatar, but I have the real one at the tip of my fingers! MUWAHAHA!!!

(assuming you know that is the Alienware logo, if you just found it randomly on google then you have no idea what I'm talking about and I just made a fool of myself :P)

  5. Well, sure it works. But, if registered at the copyright office there is no need to show proof of ownership. While to be honest I don't really know the details involved in showing proof of ownership, but I do believe it requires some time and dedication (even if you have clear evidence like the mailed letter) since others can still challenge the evidence as falsified (and that means some form of investigation which might end up costing you some money). And I believe that if you provide a sealed letter against someone who might have it registered there is automatically an investigation.

So it works, but registering still has its value.

  6. Yea... I'm going to try and find the other one in the library and see if i like it.

And yes, he places many politicians and people of his lifetime in hell (and purgatory and I imagine also paradise) as well as famous characters of myth and history. For example, Nimrod and the giants that rebelled against the Gods in Greek mythology can all be found in Hell.

  7. Anyway, I started reading Dante's three volume poem masterpiece "The Divine Comedy". The first novel is what most of you might know it by, Inferno. I'm not done, still have Paradiso to go through. But my library won't let me renew it for the second time and I must return it.

On the good side, I fell in love with it and am more than willing to buy it on ebay. But I've come across a bit of trouble. There's two versions of the book I'm eyeing.

One translated by Allen Mandelbaum which is the version I'm reading.

    ebay page

I like the translator, he doesn't translate exact text (there was one version i looked at the library which had italian on one page and english straight across, so I could see if I agree with the translation... but alas, there was only the first Inferno volume published in that format). But back to Mandelbaum, he does a good job. His notes near the end are extremely valuable and I am not dissapointed with him at all.

But, on the other hand I found this version, by John Ciardi

    ebay page

It obviously has a far superior book art, cover and quality. I've never seen the translation so I don't know what its like. There's no reason I would think this version is worse, except there's the possibility.

What do you guys think? And who has read his works?

  8. I really hope they realease Halo 2 to PC, specially if Gearbox makes the port. I applaud them immensly for their work with Halo, the new maps were fabulous!!! High Resolution (for those who can't afford HDTVs), free multiplayer (for those who didn't want to pay for Live) is all good stuff.

Also, none of the on-the-spot rendering which plauged H2 in xbox would be in PC, or at least I hope not.

  9. Technically, any original piece of art, as soon as it is created is copyrighted. But, many people put the symbol there to announce it's copyrighted so that others do not take credit for it.

While it is legally copyrighted from creation, it doesn't stop people from stealing it and taking credit (but if you hire lawyers and bring a case against them, with proof it was your creation, then you'd most likely win).

But the proper way to do it, is to register at the copyright office and that way, there's record of it belonging to you and if someone steals it you don't have to go through all the hastle of proving its yours.

At least that's as much as I understand.

  10. Wow, my highlights would have to be...

Self Portrait at the bottom, it was bound to happen, the most horrid one is one of my favorites. B)

I love the Culture of Excess, specially the meaning behind it.

Do I detect a hint of Tolkien in "Winter"? Looks like treebeard.

Airplane and Doing Business are both very good art works...

Great Job, post here when you have more!

  11. WARNING : I have added SPOILER warnings so that I can make the review with both groups of people in mind. If you have not watched it, and you see a SPOILER in parenthesis please skip it. Specially for this movie, it’s really necessary!

“The greatest act of a warrior is to lay down his sword.”

    Hero

    Directed by Zhang Yimou

Jet Li , Ziyi Zhang, Tony Leung Chiu-Wai

Rated PG13: stylized martial arts violence and a scene of sensuality

    Watch Ability – 10

I was breathless after this movie, it literally stunned me. Sure the trailers made me think it was good, but it was so much more. I have just finished watching it for the second time to see how watch ability is. Sure, some of the enchanting characteristics are less impressive but the mind blowing fight scenes still hold me enthralled.

    Genre Quality – 10

Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon I never got, this one I get. This is to me the peak of Asian stylized movies. It has all the mind-numbing action that was in Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon but it has so much more. The special effects are amazing, the fights incredible, the acting brilliant, the story spotless. I can not think of a single complaint against this movie.

    Originality – 9

I know, many people will say that this is just a rip-off from Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon… But it’s not. It’s an evolution, taking a concept and applying to more. Just as I hope Lord of the Rings will inspire other great movies. This movie is not the most original, but it does everything to such a polished state that its hard to place fault on it.

    Acting – 10

Ziyi Zhang (Broken Sword’s servant girl) is amazing, as she was in Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. Jet Li (Nameless warrior), while a fine actor stood grey in the background and did not offer much to the role, or the role did not offer much to him. The spotlight falls on Maggie Cheung (Flying Snow) and Chen Dao Ming (Emperor). They do an excellent job. Altogether, I give acting a 10.

    Plot/Story – 10

This is where the movie got to me the most. It is a beautiful movie, but it is not brainless. The story acts much like a poem, telling a tale in a beautiful rhythm but with few and simple words. Basically, while complicate something that does not need to be. At least that’s what you are thinking up until you realize, this movie is not ending yet. It weaves in and out, going back and forth and you are left stunned, because it is so completely not expected. I can give the plot of this movie, nothing less of a 10.

    Music/Sounds – 10

The music is beauty. From the first note you hear, it all flows with the story. I don’t know what else to say, it is the most fitting soundtrack I could imagine. I give it a 10.

Trailer – 8 (not figured in overall score)

First let me say that Hero is not a Quentin Tarantino movie, it was filmed in Asia two years ago! He just helped bring it over and market it. And as such, the trailer is not original… at least the one I saw. It does a fine job of getting you interested, and at least it gives you a chance of hearing about it. But one thing it does great, it does not let you think the movie is better than it is, really it does the opposite. But I am very interested in seeing the original trailer.

    Overall – 9.9

    +: Breathtaking Action

    +: Amazing Music

    +: Great Plotline

    +: Good Acting

When the movie was finally over, I just uttered “Oh My God”. That statement is not just because of how good the movie is, but just how close it came to passing by me unnoticed. This movie opened my eyes to what beautiful pieces of art I might be missing due to lack of access.

  12. mmm... I didn't see this coming. I mean, here's EA. A successful and experienced developer that also messed up. Is there a curse on Tolkien games, because I can't believe these developers who call themselves tolkien fans (I nearly chocked in a gamespy interview with a WotR developer who said he was the greatest tolkien nut in his circle of friends and he was just describing how the Balrog can be summoned by Sauron's forces!)

Anyway, I don't see how they can sit and plan a campaign where Gandalf doesn't fall into the abyss, or Boromir doesn't die (BfME) or Aragorn fights the Witch-king near Anduin (FotR) or Gandalf/company attacking Minas Morgul (WotR)... Sure, some might say that they are trying to keep things fresh. But comon, if they are making a game based on tolkien, they should realize that orcs, elves and ents are not Tolkien, but boromir dieing while saving Frodo : That's tolkien.

I really had high hopes for BfME, even knowing that it was based on the movies. Ok, I admit the movies have taken some very seperate paths from the books, but for the majority they are fairly loyal. Well, this just proves how important it is to make TLA.

  13. Of course, to suggest that the Witch-king was more powerful than Gandalf is to say a lot! It says that not only is he more powerful than Gandalf, he is more powerful than a Balrog. But mortals have defeated Balrogs and maiar before, with Glorfindel and Ecthelion. Now of course, you'll say those were some of the mightiest of the ELVES, Witch-king is a mortal man. But I believe the Witchking had grown so powerful (of course, with help from his master) that he could prove a challenge for Gandalf. It is a fact that Gandalf doubted himself against the Witchking, now the other time he doubted himself was against the Balrog (though I agree, he seemed more optimistic against the Witchking).

But I guess we'll never know for sure. Man, sometimes don't you hate that the Rohirrim should up when they did, just 5 more minutes and we'd know.

  14. Please, don't act like that. It will get you in trouble (even the possibility of being banned, since this sort of stuff causes flame wars). But a warning to others, lets not start a flame war over this.

As for the drinking game, I think it is important to show elves in a less than serious mood, since that's how they were (specially the nandor). An elf is not always sad, not always serious just like a person is not always happy or always sad. And just like any people, they drank and played and enjoyed their lives. And while I certainly believe the scene was added for Gimli humor, I believe it breaks the standard that elves are just distant and unlike men and share no similiarities. The difference between elves and men, is the different between men and dwarves.

    [Yiuel : just merged them]
