  1. I love Gollum's riddle game, they were awesome to try and figure out the first time I read it or when I can't remember the answer (takes a long long time).

I also like the Silvan elves and their less old/solemn view in LotR. This is one of the only times they truly show elves in time of peace!

I really liked Smaug and Bilbo's conversation, and now I like it even more noticing the Dragon-Spell back from the Silmarillion... it's awesome.

  2. No but it's the same type of game. I for one hated it, it just feels awkward. But then I hated Battle Realms as well, and I can give you no true reason in any case. I did like the scenario part, the story mainly, how they focused on the corners of the book rather than the regular Fellowship path, but you can't quite forgive them from not tapping into the other books because of this nice idea (at least I can't)

And I don't like how characters walk then run, the selection circles, the way the controls work. The graphics seemed bland and the maps a bit messy. And those orcs are too much like War3. The game just annoys me overall.

Though I do like the voice acting, Gollum is brilliant and Legolas is good too. Gimli I found odd, but not bad. And I liked how they made trees and stuff. I didn't play much of the dwarven scn so I won't comment on their normal RTS gameplay.

I will prolly still buy it (it's still a Tolkien game - I bought Fellowship of the Ring) but I hope it turns out to be better than the demo. But one thing is that games usually do seem a lot better than they are if you have a low expectation (BloodRayne amazed me, mainly because I expected it to suck)

But I think it's a very close clone of War3, but not too obviously. I think it can stand it's own as a game, sort of a mix between War3 and Battle Realms.

  3. Psst...

(while Adam has his back turned)

    Forces of Darkness

They will have cheap and expendable weak regular units, but with powerful siege and elite units. Their buildings will be expensive and their high units as well to counter for the cheap regular forces. Anyway, they'll be an agressive civ since ppl will try to rush a lot. They have limited underground abilities and are the only ones who can construct/train air units. Their resource collection will be rather flawed, and it will seem like you are destroying all the resources around you way to fast and force you to seek farther out for them.

    Edain

They will be the more normal civ. With fairly powerful units, not too expensive but moderate. They will have more powerful techs and their resource gathering will be good. Their buildings are going to be very good, but expensive making them more of a defensive civ rather than the mobile Northmen. Also, they have better alliances with people, and more enemies among the darker inds.

    Northmen

Fair unit but less expensive than the Edain. They will have by far the best calvary, and so to counter them the regular unit (spearman) will be very useful. But the good thing with calvary is that a retreat is actually possible. Their buildings will be cheap and so you can abandon them and rebuild easier. They are fairly neutral to most inds so that you can form your own alliances/enemies (to some degree).

    Dwarves

They will be based underground, so they will be most likely defensive and allow you to muster large armies before enemies find you. There will be ways to enter dwarf cities (their own gates and there will also be natural caves). They will have very powerful meele, not very good ranged units. Their siege will be 2nd only to FoD but they don't have navy (neither does SA/TA FoD). Overall they may be the most unique to play. Their economy will be very strong, maybe even the strongest and above all their goods/trading will surpass all (MYTHRIL)

    Noldor

They will ve extremely good all around. Fair archers, fair calvary, good infantry, not very good siege but come on! Their buildings will be good, their techs will be good. They will seem like the perfect civ, expect for the price. It will be expensive. Just as a Noldor may stand for 8 orcs, he'll cost 8 orcs. Their train time and research time will also be slow. And they aren't necesserily in a hurry to get resources. But non-the-less, they are likely to be the more powerful civ.

    Teleri

They will be extremely agile and cunning. As Adam said, tree walls allows them to easily confuse the enemy and defend their territory. Their archers will be the best, their siege and calvary though... Infantry will be good, nothing special. Their buildings will be fairly good and techs are pretty powerful. Overall they will be challenging to play with but fun, and they aren't as expensive as the Noldor. Their ind relations is good and bad, nothing really special there. And this will be my personal pick!!!

ALL OF THE INFORMATION I GAVE YOU IS NOT OFFICIAL AND SOME AREN'T EXACTLY TOTALLY DISSCUSSED. BUT I THOUGHT YOU GUYS DESERVED A SMALL PREVIEW, THE STUFF ADAM PUTS ON THE WEBSITE IS OFFICIAL THOUGH.

  4. I didn't participate because I hit myself really hard in the head with a hammer so that I did not have to spend the wait until the official trailer awake. Worked quite nicely, I woke up just tonight and downloaded it. Seems like 1-2 hours went by since this topic opened!!

Anyway, I myself think Scouring will be in the extened version, though it will be a very long extra scene (not that I'm complaining). Yea, I would think that the reforging of the sword would be flashbacks, but then somehow it seemed to hide so well so far. The sword Aragorn used so far in TTT and FotR is not Narsil right? So I guess we'll have to wait and see.

Is it just me or does Gollum seem more hungry and tired than his TTT version?

I'm not a total purist, or rather, am still open to non-purism. The only real problem with the movies so far have been the elves in Helm's Deep, but we survived that so let's hope PJ doesn't feel like he has to do a more drastic change than that :D (or even repeat that again)

Well, now I'll go a hit myself with a larger hammer and see if I can remain unconscious until December, otherwise I'm not sure I can wait :)

  5. Yes, ok. That's good to hear, I was actually worried if we were having a too hopeful goal... I think a year or two after that is more realistic.

If that seems long to some people, consider this:

Age of Mythology I think took 4 years (if I am not mistaken). Only reason it didn't seem that long was because they begun in secret right after AoK: TC. And they are getting paid full time, we'll take a lot longer. But it's just as unpredictable as if it'll rain on September 22, 2050. Well, maybe not that impossible :)

  6. From what I've seen it's less of a RTS than War3 was. But I'm hopinh once I get home I'll play it and find it better than my first impression last night (though usually it goes the other way around).

But anyway, I do agree BME looks promising, though no more promissing than other RTS titles. I mean, AoM we thought was going to be great... it was ok. War3 we thought was going to be great... it was good. So far the most epic RTS (other than Total War which I enjoyed) is Praetorians.

  7. Ok, I hate to give more or different info than Adam but I'll give you my opinions per say, but beaware that not all the info I give will be right.

There was a date of the end of 2004 running around the old forums, I guess it's a fair guess but it might be later or sooner, we can't tell.

We're aiming for unit to stand on walls, it's a very important part of the gameplay, but I don't think we can truly promise it right now... But so far you can count that in.

Adam's answer is the answer I'll stick too, and the other two were basically what Adam was saying but with more details.

  8. I have the feeling I already replied to this topic, but can't see my post... dejavu (sp?) I guess.

Anyway, I myselft am more interested in WotR... not because I think it'll be better but because they are closer to completition. And as far as I know there are few games that attempted to clone War3, more games trying to clone AoK style epics though. Anyway, I see BME more like a mix between AoK and Total War... It might be intriguing and definenlty good to look at. But I don't see any of them as an amazing gaming feat. One might be a fun rpg like RTS, the other a massive beautiful RTS and TLA a common detailed RTS.

Indeed to have TLA compared to them is (I agree with Adam) ridiculous, though I'll prolly end up comparing them myself but I expect TLA shall not meet them in graphics, but hopefully we'll at least be able to say it's more accurate.

But both games I'm judging on screens pics I've seen so far, so my judgement is most likely wrong.

PS: I hope they give more random outfits for soldiers in BME, because looking at a perfectly dressed Gondorian all the time might get boring (have life a missing helmet, dirty clothes, taller and shorter... specially if a lot of game relies on you watching the battle.

  9. I understand what you mean, but hobbits only exist in ME because of The Hobbit right? Also the Necromancer he does treat fitting of Sauron, though I have not read the Letters and I'll trust that you know what you are talking about.

  10. Oh that's ok, I was just wondering if it would be helpful if everyone's position was clearly visible in each post. But this works for me, I'll work my way out of snaga.

PS: Totally off topic, did you know dwarves have blue beards? Dwalin had a blue beard!? I had totally forgotten this, in truth am quite dissapointed, makes them a bit too fantasy like. Though it was in the hobbit, and there's no other evidence in LotR,Sil or UT (I think).

  11. Wow, nice work Adam. I love the layout!!!

Now is this developer's forum or public? With three forums I need some direction as to what to use.

I assume the old one will enventually redirect visitors to this and the other staff forum will be eventually removed and this will prevail? But then, what will be the wfg forums and 0ad...

Anyway, I'm currently visinting all three so I won't miss out on anything.

PS: Don't mean to complain but the lines dividing forums/number of topics/last replies and so forth in the home board (white lines right now) are hard to see... Just wondering if they were darker it'd be better?
