  1. My tale from midnight madness...

I left my home town (in which the only midnight source to getting Halo 2 is Wal-Mart, and only reserved copies) so I drove an hour to the first EB games to wait in line. Arrived 30 minutes before midnight and the line was already 300-400 long.

After one hour in the freezing cold I finally was one of the four being allowed inside the mall to buy it. All along I was sick to my stomach afraid I would not get my copy (will not not pre-order a game again). But by the time I got home, 2:30 AM I had my copy of Halo 2. I even thought of starting this topic, but that would mean 20 minutes diverted from Halo 2.

I've been playing Legendary with my brother in cooperative (either that or we would have to split the time) but luckily I found cooperative in Legendary to be challenging since if one person dies you both have to restart. We are in (don't know which level, the one inside the temple with the covnant honor guards).

So far I've been amazingly impressed. I don't think its better than the first one, simply because the first was totally original and also the pacing is different. This Halo is more like regular FPS, fast paced action oriented. Not bad but I miss the great wide sniping/tackle it anyway you want levels.

But there are great highlights such as dual wielding, drone swarms, vehicle damage (looks so awesome!), graphics, plasma Sword and ... SMG!!!!!!

  2. If Tolkien still lived, he would weep.

But on a lighter note, here's a bit of information I liked

Tarrant Costelloe himself runs a Lord of the Rings-connected website, Planet-Tolkien.com, which has also attracted its share of attention from the Tolkien Estate although the Estate finally decided that an extensive site making no money and actively promoting the very assets that it draws its money from, was not such a bad thing.
  3. You know, its not that the books apply to all these situations. It's that we apply the books to the situations. I can look at pretty much anything and find ways it is similar to something else. What I find odd is that much of the public face of the Tolkien culture (I'm talking intellectual culture, not D&D culture) use Tolkien's works as allegories, but that's specifically what Tolkien hated.

Majority of Tolkien fans I know in real life are chrisitan fans, who love the books for the spiritual and religious allogories. I've found it's easier to ignore them than to argue with them.

  4. I voted on Tuesday, for Kerry.

Maybe someone can explain why its considered rude to ask ppl who they are voting for. If you have the power to elect a leader, shouldn't you be willing to defend your position.

But it's not important, Kerry lost anyhow. At least I can take comfort in the fact he won in Minnesota, so my vote got translated into Electoral Votes.

Well, at least political campaigns will die for another four years. Those are what pisses me off!

  5. For school I'm planning on doing a project, a easy long hour little true work project just to cover some ground on my credits. So my idea is to read a series of high literature books and compile reviews and opinions about them. The problem is, I need to choose what I'll read.

By high literature I mean the classic novels, poems, etc. that highschool or higher level reading. The ones I've thought of so far might better direct you on what type and subject I enjoy (but feel free to suggest things different from what I have) the idea is to stretch:

The Lord of the Rings (hehe) - Tolkien

Tale of Two Cities - Dickens

    Dracula - Stoker

    Frankenstein - Shelley's

    Dante's Inferno - Alighieri

    The Illiad - Homer

    The Odyssey - Homer

The Art of War - Sun Tzu

  6. The Hunter’s Fall

    By: Shane “ElfTheHunter” Mackinnon

Orion, the Hunter, walked beneath the forest eaves,

Spear in hand, sword sheathed and bow behind,

He met golden maiden fair among the leaves,

He of Immortal race and she of elven kind,

Love awoke within his heart some have said,

Or lust for a virgin girl others sadly sing,

He returned the day after to find her dead,

Draco, the Dragon-lord known also as the Fire-king,

Scerpheus, the Scorpion, called Steel-Warrior and Metal-Master,

Corpus Raven, whose cold kiss and shadow wings are Death,

For envy and hate they ambushed him though he was faster,

And with a strike from each, Orion drew his final breath.

    Talira, Orion's sage and bard,

Found her Master dead and slain.

She wept and cried and told her guard:

"His soul in this world shall remain.

Bring me an Angel's pearl, for they are deep and blessed!"

And after that binding ritual, she saw dead maiden elf.

She revived the girl, then she put herself to rest,

For she loved Orion more than she loved herself.

And could not bear to live in the same world as Orion's love.

So she passed and was no longer Talira, morning dove.

The Hunter’s servants held the dark green gem,

They worshiped it as the Hunter’s Eye,

And a Helm of silver-white was forged by them,

And a prophecy that murderers would one day die,

Upon the brow of Hunter’s Helm was set the Eye,

Wars and battles were fought by elves and men,

And the Eye was deemed too powerful for the open sky,

Tombs were built within the Deep, the Eye was carried to one of ten,

And there, buried for many years it shall remain,

Until the day its power, the Hunter’s Son shall gain.

I have a question, in the above poem is there anything you guys can tell me is wrong? I mean, I have never really taken classes or learned anything about poem writting and it's always been simple attempts to do what I think is good, but I would like the opinion of others (specially more educated others) as to what is missing, or what I should focus on for the next poem and things like that...

    Just curious?

  7. Hey, thanks for the pin Op ;)

And keep in mind, I very much want competition so if someone can't participate because of time, I am happy to extend the deadline. Though I would prefer to do this as early as possible so that everyone knows of the extension before they finish their papers. So if you think you'd participate, if there was only more time, please say something.

  8. No, I am not mistaking this forum with the WFG general forum... this contest is for you guys.

Basically, I will give you a question/theme. You then, using any resource you consider solid, research and write an essay giving, explaining and providing backup sources for your opinions.

I'm not interested in length, but rather in quality and research. I don't want a theory, or a theory is fine, but I want enough reference to the books, enough evidence in the books and enough reasons to support your theory, that it is more than just a claim.

What is the purpose of this, well, for one it's to further enrich our knowledge of Tolkien, but also to get the community more involved with the role of TLA. That of research and study of Tolkien's mythologies.

And I realize this is not for everyone, some may not be interested in other questions/themes (which is fine, but this contest I am doing for a specific question) and I encourage you to follow through and write your paper and then share it with us here.

    Ok, here's the official details:

    WHAT

A researched and informed essay on the subject of what orcs ate? How did Morgoth and Sauron feed their armies? Where was the food taken from?

    Points to Consider

    - In the First Age, during the Siege of Angband orcs and all of Morgoth's creatures were forced to remain underground for centuries. How did they survive?

    - Sauron had slaves that worked on fields in Southern Mordor, but was this food used to feed his orcs or for another purpose? And was it enough to feed his orcs?

    - We know that orcs ate and drank, it's obvious in Lord of the Rings and the other books. But where did that come from?

    HOW

Make sure to provide support for your claims. Claiming that orcs hunt is easy, but now providing enough reference and evidence to make that claim serious, that's what this contest is about.

I'm not forcing you to use only Tolkien's books (though they will probably receive more respect), all of the internet has many sites with excellent information. But be careful, not all of it can be trusted. The books are the only sources that can be trusted for certain (and even then an eye must be kept out for contradictions)

    WHEN

I'm going to give a due date to start things out, but it is flexible and will depend on how many people are interested and how busy people are. If enough request for an extension is given, an extension will be given ;) But for now the due date is November 25, which gives everyone a a month and a half.

    WHO

I will be judging of course, maybe a few other members of the TLA team (unless they decide to participate). But since I'm starting the contest I'll also be handing out the prizes.

    PRIZES

    1st Place - 3 reps up, 1500 currency

    2nd Place - 2 reps up, 1000 currency

    3rd Place - 1 rep up, 500 currency

    SEND ALL ENTRIES TO ELFTHEHUNTER@GMAIL.COM

Any questions, feel free to ask

  9. I guess that would work, though sale figures would be perfect. Other numbers I have in mind are number of times it was in the weekly top 20 list and price (though I realize how horrible this last one is). Anyway, I'll probably use that instead of price. thanks.

And system specifications is already being used as the ionization of the 'element'

  10. Or at least most games. I googled and googled and no luck yet, not giving up but if you guys know where or where to look at it would be a very appreciated help :)

Anyway, let me know ASAP. By this thursday it's too late, and if I haven't found it I'll use something else. As an alternative, what number can I use to personalize games (I'm making a periodic table of games I own). I'm already using release date for the atomic number, but I need another number for atomic mass (retail sales would be perfect)

  11. I think what will limit us from using the trample thing for Mumakil is that our physics engine will be a lot less spetacular than Rome : Total War.

And even if we had the tech, we'd prolly not use it since Tolkien clearly describes that the Mumakil would cause clearings on all sides. Arrows were exchanged from the Mumakil to the enemies and so forth, there was no foot poking and hacking like the movie showed. The horses wouldn't even go near them.

  12. for now cosmetic... but TLA could easily have physical damage (to some extent) but the extra amount of work is for now considered an optional part of the game. We'll try to get a basic game (without physical damage) before we plan in adding these features.

  13. BTW, I used butt because I wasn't sure if a$$ was allowed.

Anyway, let me explain my situation:

    Friday - Alienware Laptop Arrives

That's right. I spent all the money I have managed to save up ($2700 for those who are interested) and bought the ferrarris of the gaming notebooks. But then its my money, so I guess I have the right to it :P

Anyway, it was beautiful and a masterful piece of machine that I will likely treasure for the rest of my life (or at least a full year).

    Specs -

    3.0Ghz HT

    1 GB RAM

    nvidia GeForce fx5700Go

    60 GB 7200rpm HD

I had been saving a WD 200 GB IDE hard drive to add to my old machine when I reformatted it, but I wanted the laptop first to more easily back up all the data. Anyway, I packed the laptop nice and full and begun to install the hard drive and reformat the old computer.

Saturday - Clouds begin to set in

Anyway, after working a 8 hour shift from 2:00 to 10:00 pm I returned to my computer. Now, going through the BIOS menu, to Windows Boot menu to Windows Setup menu I began to notice that the WD2000 was not always being recognized. I checked the connections over and over, I switch the WD2000 and the WD1200 (old one) from slave to master to eveyr possible combination but still things felt shaky.

I foolishly, and not knowing better, managed to boot it and it picked up both hard drives. I created a partition in both hard drives, and formatted/installed windows on the WD1200.

    Sunday - The night arrives

Now, on Sunday (after and before another 8 hour shift) I continued the battle. But this time the hard drive was forgotten a bit. Windows instead reared its ugly head. Service pack 2 would not recognize my cd key as valid, and this irritated me because I knew it was valid and had used it before to get both the installation and service pack 2. But after some googling I found the change activation key method, which still didn't work but allowed me to get into contact with the right phone number and after some tech support I managed to get service pack two.

Now some may be wondering why I was dying to get service pack 2 so much, well the reason is that the WD2000 was showing up... it wasn't formatted (file system: RAW) but it showed up. But windows only recognized 127 GBs of it. Now, if you search around you'll find that Windows (below SP 1) does not offer 48-bit LBA which is needed to recognize hard drives bigger than 127/137 GB. Anyway, once it was downloaded I rushed to check my hard drive and it still was only at 127 GB (I'm checking on the size through the right-click format... option, in there there's a size pull down that lists the size).

Monday - The battle is near over, unless unlooked for help arrives

When I was about to give up hope of ever getting my 200 GB hard drive (and I don't think it's my BIOS that does not support it because in the BIOS menu it lists the WD2000 with 200.1 GB). Anyway, I began reformatting the hard drive through windows but then two things happened. Well, first complaint is that nothing happened. For all I know it has never even started formatting it, just freezes there (or else is taking a long long time). But on two occasions the reformatting (if one was truly in progress) was interrupted. The first the computer, or to be more accurate, half the computer just died. The fans kep running but the mouse, keyboard, monitor connection, cd-roms/rws all just died as if the computer had the plug pulled. After this bizzare incident I reset the computer (the power button apparantly died as well) and decided to just continue. Then while I was reformatting again, the computer just restarted. When it logged back in the hard drive was no where to be found.

Worried, I turned off the computer, unplugged it and plugged it back in. Started it up and wala, the hard drive was there. Anyway, right now (as I've typed this plea for help) I have left it reformatting but I see now no progress has happened).

I'm reading to just yank the hard drive out and just go back to what I had... unless you guys have any more help to provide...

  14. How about Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. Of course, you're decision making is totaly done in dialogue and not real life (but the effects are a lot more immersive with the story). Characters react different, but I'm not saying Fable has worse action/reaction... just that it was not that revolutionary.

But to each his own, and my brother is playing a lot of it. While he says it's not near the game it could have been (7/10) he still likes it and is getting addicted.

go figure, every one has their own tase
