Greetings. Just tried 0 A.D. Very good impressions! First of all, I like the music a lot. Good job from the composer. Then the graphics are amazing for me, I just love them. The movement of the units is pleasing, and the fighting is too. Everything worked smoothly. Congratulations!3 points

Hi all. I'm consistently impressed with the quality of artwork in this game good job all. That includes the main menu background done by dashinvaine. Top notch. My question is about the inscription on the pillar. I've been trying to decipher it, and having trouble. Yes, my Greek is rusty. The best I get is something like: "an army from Pontus, reasonable sized (or perhaps, twenty?), of the message because of the Ephesians and other Ionians, a publication." That obviously makes a lot of sense. Can someone with better knowledge of Greek piece it together better for me? Searching on these forums came up with nothing except this quote from Aristosseur: Though I still don't understand the inscription, I probably agree with Aristosseur that it doesn't make much sense on a Spartan pillar as all the places mentioned are in Anatolia. This may seem esoteric, but in a game that attempts to be historically accurate it shouldn't be difficult to come up with a realistic inscription.2 points

Understood But in the meantime, I'll look for possibilities. It's just for fun anyway...2 points

Amazing game! Glad I discovered it. Really good to see an open source, cross platform game that is of the quality of commercially developed RTS's. However, we where playing a game on LAN with 2 Linux clients (ubuntu 12.04 and mint 17.2 both 64 bit) and 2 windows clients (7 32 bit & 10 64 bit) (all 17298P release of the game I think) with the windows 10 client hosting the game. I had built an awesome city with stone walls all around! But then when the game host was defeated (we kicked his butt!) the server terminated and the other players got kicked. This seems like a pretty major flaw as it means only the host can properly win the game. Is this normal? Is it possible to run a server independent of the client so this doesn't happen?1 point

I'm learning more history, and I find the inscription might not be as far off as I thought. Not only did Sparta invade Ionia in 401-394 B.C., but Sparta had also (probably) received monetary contributions from Ephesus and other Ionian cities earlier during the Archidamian War (431-421). Then there is the First Mithridatic War (c. 88 BC) in which Mithridates raised a large army from Pontus, invaded and conquered Roman Asia (including Ephesus) and sent an army over to the Peloponnese, where Sparta was at least briefly an ally of Pontus against Rome. But I think the term Ionia had already fallen out of disuse by that time.1 point

How about royal peltast for ptolemeis? They need second champion unit. There is no champ skirmishers in this game at all...1 point

Well this is obviously a big liberty I took, but it sounds better than "[was] looking like intelligence". Grammatically that would be possible but I can't find a meaningful translation with this hypothesis. Maybe we're missing more words That's right. But the problem is rather that we have to find an artist able to replace that inscription. The one who created this background is long gone, and I don't think we have any WIP version with a pillar without inscription. Anyhow, I don't think anyone will be really bothered by that. I personally am a huge fan of Ancient Greek inscriptions and I love translating them, but in nearly three years of opening 0 A.D. daily it never occured to me to take a look at the meaning of this phrase1 point

I just tried to translate this and couldn't manage to do anything either... I think the original sentence was cut at the wrong place Εικος is the neutral form of εικως, which is a perfect participle of a defective verb. For this verb, the perfect has the value of a present, and it means "looking like" or "suitable". If it's the former it would call the dative, which would explain "γνωμῃ" and would mean "looking like intelligence", "looking like spirit". I would translate the whole thing as "clever" or "smart", but it's a nominative and there is no neutral nominative substantive in the sentence. "λογων ενεκα Εφεσιων και των αλλων Ιωνων" should be "because of the words of Ephesians and other Ionians", I think placing "ενεκα" inside was done on purpose, to stress the fact that Ephesians themselves made speeches. There is nothing that explains that "Ποντικον στρατον" is an accusative, but it does mean "an army from the Pontus". So my guess would be that we lost a couple of words. I have a suggestion, if we just add "Το συλλεγειν" at the beginning, we have our neutral nominative and the infinitive calls the accusative. The sentence then suddenly makes sense and becomes "The fact of raising an army from the Pontus, based on reports from Ephesians and other Ionians, [was] apparently clever". Of course this is just speculation1 point

To have honesty... I think the team need to decide if they want big cool ships with arhcers showing up on the decks, etc., or not. If not, then the ships need to be made smaller. Maybe not as small as Age of Mythology, but smaller than they are now. Right now, ship are capable of showing archers on deck (I commit to my mod a diff from Trac that allow for desginer to make only certain unit show up on garrison prop points, thank god for this patch -- I just wait for the day when Public mod changes deprecate this cool feature in my mod, just commit it already folks). Problem with visible garrison point on ships has to do with pathfinding being confuse and cause bad behavior (my guess is all propped units have their own paths which conflict with the path of the ship). If this is fixed, and the patch committed that allow ships (and forts, etc.) to show only ranged unit on deck, catapults, etc. then game is on a good track for interesting ship combat (just add ramming to complete features, forget boarding; then add some custom code for ship pathing so they act a little more natural). If not, just make them small and then you don't have the propping and ships can be easy and boring (but less work). @Royal Peltasts: It would be GREAT to have battalion feature in the game, so then you can have 1-off recruitment of special battalions like these. For instance,Royal Peltasts can have a battlion limit of 1, making them the truly elite of the elite of your pike corps, and then how you use them and where you use them become important. These guys are your cream of the cream. Upgrade them with an officer, a priest, and a bannerman, and they are a battalion worthy of the name. Guys, cool @#$% like this. Like for Spartans, use imagination and think about how you could train: Perioikoi Hoplite Battalions: Unlimited Standard spearman battalion, with Bannerman, Noisemaker, and Officer upgrades. Spartiate Hoplite Battalions: 5 Champion-level battalions, with Bannerman, Noisemaker, and Officer upgrades Hippeis Hoplite Battalions: 1 Ridiculously strong. Upgrade with a hero, like Leonidas, to complete the badassery. A Priest could be a special upgrade. He heals units in his battalion and can perform a pre-battle sacrifice of a goat.1 point

Alpha XX Tersus. It means clean, neat, correct. The justification is that this new version doesn't add (until now) big new features, instead there's a lot of work polishing things. Source1 point

We will just reuse the Norse unit textures for now.. (I want to rework/improve the unit textures (again) the rework should start once the new unit meshes and animations are implemented, after doing my of research on clothing and natural dyes, I realized that most of the current details were either wrong or poorly done.) Note: Norse helmet (placeholder) Current shield patterns looks too Christianized, I might add animal style shield motifs1 point

Guys, let's talk about thing that can improve gameplay. Lets not talk about high-level features like formations. I'll give you example: Player and AI should be able to build building over single tree. This can help AI greatly when place building and gives players easier management of building placement. Tree don't block building placement and disappear when foundation put down. This can be done with tag or element in template so we can make mines unbuildable but trees and some eye candy buildable. (In my mod I'd make groves unbuildable but single tree buildable). When task player to chop a tree, attack a enemy structure or unit, or go mine metal, or any task like this, the target should flash white, briefl, to give player feedback to the eye.Any other idea like these? Low-level. Not high-level concept.1 point
