This topic is started to discuss the civilization of the Norse and how it is going to be implemented in the game.

Here will also be the final proposal.

Description:
The Norse of old were a north Germanic people who hailed from Scandinavia. During the early Middle Ages their regions expanded to Russia, England, Iceland and Greenland. They traveled to as far as Asia to the New World nearly 500 years before Columbus. Though feared for their fighting skills, they were also skilled traders and sailors. By the end of the Viking Age, which lasted from 793-1066 AD, their raids on the mainland faded, nonetheless they have left their mark on European culture and history.

Gameplay:
Norse don't have strong defences. Instead they (should) rely on keeping the initiative, expand fast and get hold of crucial resource spots (which is possible because they can build houses anywhere on the map).
The house has a small ranged attack and can be built anywhere on the map, however they're a lot more expensive than normal houses. The citizen soldiers have a small speedbonus but are slow gatherers. Also the Norse lack cavalry. They have a couple of hybrid buildings (farmstead is merged with corral and Civic Center is merged with the fortress) and their navy is very versatile (see the line-up below for the bonuses they have)

Unit Roster:
Warrior (swordsman/axeman): http://wildfiregames.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=17918&page=4#entry280934

Posted Images

Let's start with the description.

The Vikings (from Old Norse víkingr) were seafaring north Germanic people who raided, traded, explored, and settled in wide areas of Europe, Asia, and the North Atlantic islands from the late 8th to the mid-11th centuries.

This one is copy-pasted from wikipedia, but personally I don't like copy-pasting litteraly. Also it could be a somewhat longer description. So does anyone has a good idea?

Vikings Normans

vikings.jpg

the triskels let me thinks these are celts not vikings...

I'm not historian at all, but the map looks to merging vikings, varangians and normans empire... I would not consider sicily and the south of italy, (same for england, gallic and irland) as settlement of scandinavia just because they were ruled by normans... vikings became normans and were not scandinavians anymore... for example they became christians in exchange to live in normandy (vassal of the french crown). Moreover the mod is called 1000 ad.. actualy in western europe that was the time were vikings settled in normandy... the viking as raiders was more in 900ad... and in eastern europe some vikings called varangians go to constantinople to fight for the emperor.

So for me, my opinion is viking should be changed for normans... but this is not my mod...

ps I'm not norman....

No, I wouldn't rename.

First of all the timespan from the first part of our mod is 476 AD (Fall of western roman empire) till 962 AD. So the 11th century isn't part of the mod. (As you can see on the map, that time Sicily and Normandy were conquered/ colonized)

Becoming Christian wasn't part of the deal to get Normandy, the vikings were bribed in order to stop raiding. The Varangians were hired by the Byzantine empire because of their fighting skills.

Viking is more in reference to those that went raiding and exploring? Norse or Scandinavian also would work.

noun \ˈvī-kiŋ\ : a member of a group of Scandinavian people who attacked the coasts of Europe in the 8th to 10th centuries A.D

Nice pictures BTW. But I think it is better to use them in a context instead of just posting them.

Let's first start with the emblem and a brief history and after that we'll discuss the units / buildings. In that context I would like to see these pictures.

Well, I won't hold you back in terms of contributing. In fact everyone is allowed to join the team, if he wants to. You just have to contact NoMolester (the mod leader) and he will take care of the rest.

I'm sure he agree with the Developing. Sighvatr it's very skill and love Nordic Cultures.

"At its peak (around 200 B.C.), the massive Celtic Empire spanned from Spain to Romania and Northern Italy to Scotland; although it wasn't a true empire because the Celtic people were not united by any form of government, but only in language and various social aspects. Their lack of any cohesion was probably the largest contributing factor to their ultimate submission to Rome by 100 A.D. The other contributing factors were their lack of armor and their inability to counter the mighty legions and siege weapons of Rome." (Celt civ 0 A.D.)

"The Romans controlled one of the largest empires of the ancient world, stretching at its peak from southern Scotland to the Sahara Desert, and containing between 60 million and 80 million inhabitants, one quarter of the Earth's population at that time. Rome also remained one of the strongest nations on earth for almost 800 years. The Romans were the supreme builders of the ancient world, excelled at siege warfare and had an exquisite infantry and navy.", (Roman civ 0 A.D.)

These are some sample descriptions from already existing civs.
As you can see, they are structured in the following way:
- about the controlled / inhabited countries and according dates.
- about the people.
- about their skills.

Applying this layout to the Vikings, it would be like this:

The Vikings were of old inhabitants of the Scandinavian Peninsula. During the early Middle Ages their regions expanded to Russia, England, Iceland and Greenland. They even discovered the New World before Columbus did. Though feared for their fighting skills, they were also skilled traders and sailors. At the end of the so called Viking Age, which lasted from 793 AD to 1066 AD, their raids on the mainland faded, nonetheless they have left their mark on Europian history.

rev 1:

Does anyone has comment / additions / enhancements (also linguistic)?
