(Of course, if the original seed is corrupted or altered, that's a different story. Hence the probable need for a central/'official' swarm.)

When I was younger, it was mostly hand-me-downs. You'd be surprised how many people gave me perfectly good (but old) clothes Now, my Mom buys my clothes from Target, WalMart, etc. Personally, I don't see any reason to spend exorbitant amounts of money for clothing. The shirts I wear cost between $3 and $10 at Target/WalMart. Target and WalMart. Seriously, except for *really* nice clothes (such as dress suits), I don't see any reason to spend more than what those stores charge. I disdain buying things just as 'status symbols'
