  1. A forum software? There are many...

    PhpBB (www.phpbb.com)

    Invision (Power) Board (www.invisionboard.com)

Those are two popular ones, and if you're looking for a feature, you should be able to find a MOD for it.

    Hope it helps!

  2. Well, there are security holes you will never know about - i.e. with DirectX and how you could play a corrupted MIDI file and crash you computer. You will need SP2, whatever it does to your programs, because for all you know, just having Outlook on your computer could destroy it (let alone using it). The beauty of Microsoft products.

Also, the Windows Update site does NOT work for me, it just gets stuck whenever I press 'custom scan' or 'express scan'.

  3. Check Windows Help & Support before you try that one (yes, it does list command prompt tools)...

Something like PartitionMagic would be your best bet, but beyond that, there are probably free tools as well that would do the job. However, partitioning isn't a very safe activity, even with things like PartitionMagic, so always back up beforehand (a mistake I made...)!

Anyways, good luck and have fun :wine:!

  4. Aaah! You bought a laptop! You lucky person, you!!!

    Wish I had a laptop...

But wait, is Centrino Celeron-based? Celerons are probably the worst processors Intel has ever made (IMHO anyways)! The AMD Athlon XP (which costs about the same) runs much faster. But I also heard that Intel is making a Celeron II (or they have already made it...), which should be better...

On the other hand, if it is Pentium 4 M, then you have nothing to worry about :wine:.

Anyways, have fun and happy video editing ^_^.

  5. What I meant is that Mozilla is a Netscape 'variant' - quote from 'About Mozilla' page:

The Mozilla project's launch by Netscape in 1998 was  a defining moment for the open source movement. We continue to be a leader and partner in open source development, providing low cost and alternative choices for technology. And, with millions of users, we are one of the largest distributors of open source software.

So Mozilla has a lot in common with Netscape, and most sites recognise Mozilla as Netscape (by the user agent).

But you're right, many sites force you to use IE. I mean, how hard is it to program something that will run on all browsers? The WMP plugin works with Mozilla, why can't sites use that instead of making their own applet that only supports IE (i.e. (complete coincidence) LAUNCHcast)? Failing that, Java is supported on both Mozilla and IE, why not use that?

  6. I use ReGet as well, but I'm using the non-registered version and it makes you wait one second for every day you haven't registered. Needless to say, I have some 90-100 seconds on my clock right now, and it gets really annoying. I have not yet seen a good 'free' download accelerator, however, they are useful not to be able to download faster (which it barely does, BTW), but to be able to resume broken downloads. For example, say I was downloading a 700 MB file and it would take all night. If I didn't have a download accelerator and my computer suddenly switched into standby mode, I would have to restart the download. However, with the accelerator, I can resume that download. And yes, I download 700 MB files.

  7. If your card is from a major company like Creative, you will probably know when you open dxdiag or the hardware information program. Then, you can just go to www.creative.com and download the drivers there. Intel also makes integrated sound chips. However, for smaller, unknown companies, you will have to find their website yourself.

For dxdiag: Start->Run. Type in 'dxdiag'. Go to the sound tab (already mentioned above)

For hardware info: Start->Settings->Control Panel->System. Go to the hardware tab. Click 'Device manager'. You should see a list of your hardware. Go to 'Sound, Video and Game Controllers' and check if you can find anything.

If you bought your computer from Dell, HP, etc. they mostly ship Creative and Intel cards/chips (to the best of my knowledge).

As a totally last resort, you can disconnect your sound card and check if there's any indication on the card.

If you don't get anything, another totally last resort would be to head over to Best Buy and pick up a Creative SoundBlaster Live! card. They come pretty cheap these days, and are workable for most tasks.

Also, the serial number can sometimes be an indication. You can also search for your model number (if you have it) and you might find something.

  8. Better to just go to www.gimp.org and click on Gimp for Windows. Also, the GIMP is a ~6 MB download + GTK+, which is around 5 MB.

@Lorian, I'm talking about the glass button one.

  9. So your internet turns off when you leave your computer on too long? Possibly some kind of idle switch that doesn't reset correctly? That's the best I can get...

Sometimes my dialup refuses to connect, and when it does, I just reboot my computer and it works fine...

    What ISP do you use?
