  1. BERND   m   German

    Short form of

    BERNHARD   m   German

    German form of

    BERNARD   m   English, French

    Pronounced: bur-NARD (English), ber-NAR (French)

Derived from the Germanic element bern "bear" combined with hard "brave, hardy". This was the name of several saints, including Saint Bernard of Menthon who built hospices in the Swiss Alps in the 10th century, and Saint Bernard of Clairvaux, a 12th-century theologian and Doctor of the Church. Another famous bearer was George Bernard Shaw, a playwright and essayist from Ireland.

now there you go - beware the Bear(nd) :brow:

  2. I'm a bit curious as to some of the seemingly LotR era HoME books, like Treason of Isengard, but I don't really know what's in them at all. Are they merely early drafts of parts of the published LotR? Is there much unique information that I couldn't find elsewhere?

If you are interested in the "Making of Lord of the Rings" (the book) i'd recommend you get HoME vol 6 to 9. But beware its sometimes very dry and repetive (especially the first book - if i remember correctly it covers Tolkiens first stumblings into the narrative of Book 1 and features atleast 3 different major versions of Book 1.) sure its interesting but it can get stuffy at times. the other volumes are a "lighter" read but they very often fall back on Vol. 6 so this would be (atleast IMO) a required read.

personally i enjoy the latter volumes (10, 11 and 12) of the HoME series the most. because it has LotR out of the way and covers Tolkiens late writings on various topics that concern the Elder Days (my favorites). which reminds me - i should start on Vol.11 (argh ... where's the time when i need it)

    hope i could help

  3. @joseph swede

i can only tell you my view on the titles i have at home or playtested in a store (you should do that if possible ... saves some anger later on)

    War of the Ring (PC)

    Graphics:7

    Sound:7

    Playability/Gameplay:5

    Worth:5

How Accurate it is to the books:7

    Overall:5

a so-so Warcraft-clone ... didn't overwhelm me - luckily it was a gift for Xmas. but got already nuked from my harddrive

    Return of the King (Gamecube)

    Graphics:10

    Sound:8

    Playability/Gameplay:8

    Worth:8

How Accurate it is to the books:1

    Overall:8

well - its a fun hack&slay (esp. when playing w/ 2 ppl) but it expands on the heresy of the movie :P (warning: purist attitude). a good nice and solid (and mindless) console-game (i fear its not worthy to be played on a PC, since ports from consoles tend to be worse on the PC)

Two Towers & Return of the King (Gameboy Advance)

    Graphics:5

    Sound:5

    Playability/Gameplay:7

    Worth:7

How Accurate it is to the books:4

    Overall:7

a nice break from work or on the road. has the same problems as RotK for the consoles. but hey - atleast you can play it anywhere

    The Hobbit (Gamecube)

    Graphics:8

    Sound:8

    Playability/Gameplay:4

    Worth:4

How Accurate it is to the books:3

    Overall:5

a flashy jump&run game - but has almost nothing to do w/ the book (playtested in a store). also beware the comic-like graphic which might put you off.

Lord of the Rings - The Fellowship (Adventure PC)

    Graphics:7

    Sound:7

    Playability/Gameplay:1

    Worth:1

How Accurate it is to the books:?

    Overall:1

what a disaster. i played this at a friends'. and i'm glad i didn't buy this p.o.s. buggy as h*ll and definitely not worth your time (or hdd-space)

so thats the current Tolkien-related titles that i've seen. i'm also having fond memories of older titles from the eighties - stuff like text based adventures of The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings - which were cool back then, but frowned upon today - but then i grew up w/ those 8bit-machines

    hope i could help

  4. i'm pretty sure that by the time TLA is released, there will be flurry of download options. so not to worry.

and i'm sure that if someone really only has a 56k modem and no friends w/ a decent connection that the TLA-community will come up with a way to send that unlucky individual a CD w/ the game.

  5. i've recently (back in october - during my visit in London) bought the final two volumes of the HoME series (mainly as reference for our little project here). but i've not yet progressed far - just paged through it a bit - but there IS interesting stuff to be found in there.

alas - i wish there was more time for me to spend on study than on work and on the other daily chores :)

  6. concerning the theatrical cut i voted for Fellowship. it was the most complete and accurate depiction of the books into a movie. TTT suffered from overlong battle-scenes and invented gap-fillers. RotK only continues that trend, by being bogged down with scenes that should have gone into TTT and thus having too little time to accuratly depict the latter half of the third book.

For me the theatrical versions got worse with each installment. The Extended Editions are another category - TTT:EE was a major improvement over the theatrical version and i guess RotK:EE will do the same to the theatrical version.

  7. mae govannen!

after getting home at 4:10 am and having some rest (now its 10:54 am) i can say some things about the final part of this trilogy:

    * RotK left me w/ an ambigous feeling - it sure has moments of greatness followed by moments which made me cringe. and i fear the more often i watch it, the more i'm going to dislike the theatrical version, so i will not really judge this film until i get my grubby hands on the extended edition next november.

    * some scenes that really really bothered me (but i'm picking the most problematic scene now)

Denethor's portrayal after Faramir "returns" arrow-riddled to Minas Tirith. This just doesn't make sense. He doesn't want his soldiers to fight and he doesn't want to light the beacons ??? And Gandalf knocking him out w/ his staff is just BENEATH his character. The handling of the scenes in Rath Dínen is so so ... but Denethor's melodramatic fiery plunge into MT is just as obscure :)

(the scene where he sends of Faramir into certain doom and the intercutting w/ him "eating" and Pippin's singing is pure genius though)

so currently i'm torn between awe and anger. Awe for the unmeasurable amount of work that went into the movie and anger about the sometimes ignoramus way in which Tolkien's story was abused.

my favorite little detail is the portrayal of Dunharrow (but not the Paths of the Dead), the steep road that leads to the upper plateau and at each turn there's a statue of a Púkel-Man (Frumpus will love this ;) )

i'll post more about this - but first i need some breakfast ;)

  8. ok guys & gals!

i'm off to the LotR-triple-feature starting at 17:00 ... got to bring the kids to my mum first, get some supplies (water, coke & redbull, some munchies) and then we're off to the 9hrs+ butt-numb-a-thon :)

    see ya all tomorrow

  9. btw ... anyone here w/ a case of arachnophobia ?

my wifey really - i mean REALLY is afraid of spiders. i warned her about some nasty 8-legger having an appearance in the movie (she is a Tolkien virgin per se ... has not read the books) and now she's kind of ballistic.

i tried to cure this ... by dragging her into last years spider movie (Arac Attack) pretending it was some comedy/romantic-movie w/ Hugh Grant (About a boy) ... man - she literally tore her popcorn tray apart - out of sheer shock when she saw the first hint spidery hairy legs - much to the chagrin of the people sitting in front of her (guess it was one of that rare occurances of raining popcorn :P )

so ... what i'm trying to say ... i'm very curious about her reaction when Shelob makes her appearance(s) ... i'll keep you posted on that little detail :)

  10. ah ... we don't have that here in austria :P but i've got over 100 other crap channels on my digitv receiver ... but no national geographic

oh well ... just be sure tell us the high-points of the documentary tomorrow :)

on a second note - i think i don't want to know - that way i'll be (hopefully) more blown away by the first-time experience in the cinema. (only 4 days 2go!)

  11. for certain civs (both player and independent) we could make first and second syllabels (spelling?) which would be randomly chosen by the game itself

example - Realms in Exile (Third Age) springs to my mind

Thoro + ngil (Eagle of the Star)

this would make also the following combinations possible:

    Thoro + ndil (Eaglefriend)

    Thoro + mir (Eagle-Gem)

and so on ... hope you get my drift

that way we can make unlimitied name-combinations .. what do you think ?
