    plus i've got 2 workstations behind my router. once my kids get older this will probably double :P

  2. i voted C++ too (loved it back in school) - but nowadays (with my job and all) i'm stuck on ABAP (SAP's own ugly Cobol Clone ;) ) ... but the embedded SQL rocks

    i too can get nostalgic when i think back on the stuff we learned in school (i went to a IT specialised sort-of-highschool called "HTL" - like Higher Technical Learning-Institute or something, which specialised on IT, later studied Business Informatics at my local university) ... stuff i probably will never ever need again like Cobol, Fortran, Pascal, Modula-1, x86 Assembler (nerdy but cool) and various IBM-Mainframe stuff ... but mostly we did C/C++ on PC and Unix.

  3. i'm also thinking of buying a GameCube for my kids this XMas ... why ? because (IMO) it has the better gameplay value for them and its easier to take along when they are at their grandparents house.

    also GC has got Rebel Strike (and the older Rogue Leader) ;) (atleast one GC-title for me)

    granted Nintendo aims more for the young gamers - but who am i to argue with - being a dad and all :P

  4. i've got to weigh in on this topic ... i successfully quit smoking three weeks ago ... after having smoked (on and off) for almost 12 years. :P

    so far i've experienced no withdrawal-symptoms but the temptation in the first week was horrible. i've been planning to quit smoking for the last half year - i've managed to slowly decrease the amount of cigs at first to 5 a day, then 3 a day (morning coffee, lunch, afternoon coffee - all at work - no smoking at home) and then i've stopped smoking in general.

    i've noticed some patterns when tempted to light up (all influenced by work)

    * stress

    * boredom (esp. waiting on something)

    * meeting in cafeteria after lunch for a cup of coffee

    * fellow smokers in team

    i've set myself some strict rules

    * no smoking at home (at first only the balcony was allowed - later nowhere)

    * only light up at fixed times during the day (ie. after lunch ...)

    * just put 3/5 cigs into the pack for each day

    some tips on fighting the temptation ... get some candy/gum/chocolate to occupy yourself when tempted. it works wonders - maybe so even for your waistline :P but then i generally noticed an increase in appetite (both food and sexual :P -> see ... non-smokers get laid more often :D ), my clothes stopped smelling of the darn cold smoke ... all in all i like it :D

  5. i recently unearthed D2X again - all in all w/ the "new" v1.10 patch ... i'll probably give it a spin tonight ... starting from scratch *again*

    about WC3 ... i played some months when it came out ... but i was rather bored w/ the endless rushing and falling into cookie-cutter-strategies so i mostly played it over LAN w/ my buddies ... but i stopped playing at the beginning of 2003.

    btw - my D2-account name is *drum-roll* Enarwaen :P (Europe Realm) :P

  7. thats easy

    he mortally (sic) wounded Feanor in the Dagor-nuin-Giliath

    he killed Fingon in the Nirnaeth Arnoediad with his axe

    he killed (and was killed by) Ecthelion during the destruction of Gondolin :lol:

    btw @sukkit ... the previous question - i was more looking for "Tauron - Lord of the Forests" but Araw is also correct ;)

  8. hmmm the funny little detail is ... is it normal for students to take their weapons with them to school (i mean just incase someone has that slightly itching trigger-finger ? )

    apart from that ... isn't it illegal (even in the U.S.) for ppl under a certain age to possess weapons at all ? please fill me in on that little detail !

    I'm not trying to legitimize guns by stating events that happened. I'm trying to tell the untold truth (well, ok, it was told by 6 news outlets). People think guns are such an evil. On the contrary, evidence is becoming known more and more that guns help prevent more crime.

    @quacker

    you didn't get my point. the way you "endorse" the issue, it seems to me that you think it's a good thing the students took action. if you increase the scope of this sad story - you think its ok if numerous self-promoted militia-men roam the countryside in search for crimes ? what about the legal law-enforcement ? should the police stick to parking-fines and let the armed populace tend to itself ?

    just my EUR 0.02 :P

  9. just my 2 euro-cents :P

    @quacker

    so for you the "fact" that an act of violence is stopped w/ the help of weapons legitmates the right to own guns ?

    like when you say your neighbor has a gun and in the case he goes "wacko" and starts shooting around you would also need a gun in order to stop him ?

    but i won't debate it as i haven't seen it myself, nor do i intend too.

    hmmm ... i guess you should watch it (even if you don't agree w/ the "leftist propaganda" :P ) - just so we can discuss about the issue ?

  11. the bookworm crawls out under his pages :lol: *ahem*

    yep Círdan is counted amongst the first Eldar ever to walk Middle-earth, being one of the 'Fatherless' who awakened at Lake Cuiviénen and of course much older than some "irrelevant" offspring of the House of Finarfin. ;)

    here in Austria its relatively similiar to what Kor described from the Netherlands. We too have a local level (mayor elections), provincial level (Austria got 9 provinces) which elects the "Landeshauptmann" - similiar to your Governor. these two elections are held at the same time every 6 years. on the national level we elect our members of parliament every 4 years via the different parties. the percentages of votes determines how many seats in parliament every party gets. the strongest party (usually) gets the "Federal Chancellor". And also every 6 years we get to elect our President - who has (similar to the system in Germany) no direct power over the government - but merely acts as official figurehead and is responsible for representing the country at state visits.

    In Austria voting is on a voluntary basis, you are automatically registered and allowed to vote when you reach the age of 18. (same goes w/ drivers license, casino gambling, ironically drinking and smoking is permitted when aged 16)

    Our voting percentages recently start to better themselves - because more and more people are realising that the current government (a conservative and right-wing coalition *curse them* :) ) just messes up the country. usually it was down to 60% but we are nearing the 70 - 75% mark again.

    About the US - 2 party system ... i find that fairly strange that in the US a chance in gaining enough votes is always dependable on how large ones purse is.

    from my view *cynically speaking* its not about the message/contents but much more about the package/exterior of the candidate (latest example ... electing Schwarzenegger as Californian governor) AND about the contacts/deals/backing the candidate has. just to look into Bush Jr.'s affiliations (or better his dad's :) ) makes me wonder who really influences his decisions ...
