  1. Well, I'm about to go to bed to be able to get up tomorrow to listen to him again, but I just thought I'd say something about it here as I guess there are "some" people here who might have a certain interest in that time period I'll post more tomorrow if people are interested, if nothing else a short review of the two lectures. Today he gave a short lecture on the fall of the Roman Empire and explained how archaeological evidence had influenced his ideas on what happened. Tomorrow the subject will be a comparison between Rome and Constantinople unless my memory plays tricks with me And yeah, almost forgot, you can read more about him here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bryan_Ward-Perkins and here: http://www.history.ox.ac.uk/staff/posthold...dperkins_br.htm
  2. Don't worry about being tired, I am too (And one can't really tell by the rest of the post, it's really well written for being written in such a condition know from experience that things might get strange when you're tired ) And we do also want it to be finished soon, but as getting it finished in itself doesn't give us much more than the satisfaction of having finished it we do prioritize making a good game
  3. I'm not a programmer so I don't understand it very much, but there are ideas on how to make it difficult to cheat. Few things are of course impossible, but I trust them to make it difficult enough to encourage most people to try to break it. Well, while that is possible I can't see the value of doing so. Would have to be freaks then I guess Apart from being "more open source" the only (unless they'd add other things) difference between the two versions would be the possibility to cheat, or perhaps possibly less risk of cheating depending on how such individuals would think about it. True, there might be a risk that the community would split, but personally I don't think that the number of people who would prefer such a version is large enough to make an impact on the general community. Even in such a case it wouldn't be much of a problem to us. It might be negative to the community, but our goals with this game is more about creating a great game, and making people aware of the history of this time period, than getting as much attention to our own efforts as possible or anything like that That was said by a member of our Art team, so please forgive him for not knowing everything about the code. I don't know the exact details, but of course it's the engine that will be released as open source, just not all of it. True, and of course we will not wait until we consider the game "finished" before releasing a beta, or whatever we'll name it, but still there are things we want to have finished before doing so. And regardless of whether or not the game is finished enough to release as a beta we do want to have the system setup to make use of the all the good things that comes out of it. As you state it's good for testing etc, but if we just release a beta we need to be ready to receive bug reports etc I'm not 100% sure here, but it will most likely be restricted in one way or another. At least in that people are required to give due credit. And let me finish off by saying that I personally believe that on a theoretical level any kind of restriction in distribution/reuse of ideas or material is negative as it lowers the speed of creativity. But I do also realize that most people don't like the idea of spending a lot of their time creating Art or other things and then not getting credit/someone else getting money for what they've done. So in reality I guess we need at least some level of restrictions on use. The people who create things for 0 A.D. retain copyright AFAIK, so as long as that's true (and I can't see any reason why it wouldn't be, in fact I think I've read something along these lines somewhere here, but I'm too tired to check it up right now) it's not impossible for someone who's created stuff for us to release it under any license they choose regardless of what license the stuff released with the game itself carries. That does of course also mean that we can't release media under any kind of license without their consent as all they've agreed to IIRC is that we may release it with/and with the purpose of being a part of the game.
  4. As PPE said it depends on so many things, and it could be next year it could be the year after that, and if things are really bad even worse. So we cannot promise, or not even give any estimates. There are simply too many unknown factors. There is one thing we can promise though, and that is that we'll do our best to get it done as good and as soon as we can under the circumstances we are under. It's nice to see all the enthusiasm though, and we appreciate that. And while we frankly might get a bit tired at answering questions we've heard many times and don't know the answer for we are very happy to notice that our efforts render this interest. (And your interest is sure very motivating )
  5. Hello ozmichael! At the moment you can't play the game, we're still developing it. Be sure you'll find info on how to get the game the day it's released though. Until then there's a lot of things you can do on this site, not only can you watch screenshots and concept art, but also read a lot of interesting history articles on this period of time. Not to forget the forum where you can take part in the discussion and meet members of the team as well as the great community interested in the game and its development.
  6. I'm sure your not mindless but thanks for the offer to translate the game, more info on that will be available when we get closer to release and we'll be happy to get help translate the game. Though there are people on the team from many different places in the world there are a lot more languages after all
  7. Thanks for suggesting that we take a look at compression, I think some thought has already went into this, but I'm sure the programming department likes suggestions like this. I'll leave it to them to answer what we've already planned etc though as I don't have much knowledge about these things =)
  8. I think I've seen a similar answer to this question somewhere else, but I don't remember where so I'll say something here too. While we're not aiming for many thousands of units we're sure going to try to have a significant amount, but as that will be depending on how much computing power the rest of the game will need we cannot give any estimates at the moment.
  9. Hmm, not sure how to answer such a question. If I'd been able to look into the future I might have, but now I don't so I can't. More seriously speaking though: It's a tough question, but unfortunately I guess it isn't too hard to answer. That the game won't be finished this year is most likely beyond all doubts, would require a miracle and the ability for everyone on the team to work full time on the game, so that's out of the question. And while we do hope and believe that a lot will happen next year I wouldn't promise anything. There are too many things which are uncertain, whether people will have the time, or motivation as people only have a moral obligation to do something for the game. Whether the number of bugs will be low, whether all practical stuff will work as good as they should, servers and ISPs etc. It doesn't take much to make the development take another extra week. We're doing what we can though and hope you'll like our game when it's finished, we've spent "some" time at it already after all (And the time I've spent cannot really be compared to those who have been on the team for years) On another note, someone said something about not liking the title: That's not difficult to change, I would have done it a long time ago, but since it wasn't me who started the thread I've thought that it's not too fair to start to edit other people's text without telling them. But if you want us to change it we can do that, and it's just for the topic starter to go back and edit his first post if he wants to.
  10. The game is going to be natively playable on Linux-based OSs, that's one of the core features Our aim is to have it natively playable on Windows, Linux and probably Mac too. Since there are so many different Linux-based OSs we can of course not promise that it'll work perfect on all at release time, but we'll try our best to get it working on as many systems as possible.
  11. Sounds good. We're waiting eagerly for that day And yeah, it's probably best to wait to tell some people about this game, it won't be finished tomorrow after all
  12. Then we'd better get it finished before that year then
  13. As long as our material is used to promote the game and community I can't find any reason why we would object to you using them, so I'd say go ahead.
  14. If you're adventurous you can click "View New Posts" in the upper right corner and change "Get active topics for:" from "today" to "this year" and you'll get a listing of everything that has happened. I doubt that you really would like to do that but anyway =) Welcome back!
  15. Well, as an answer to your first question I've found this old thread about the role of women in the game and the ancient world: http://www.wildfiregames.com/forum/index.p...e+role+of+women While not giving much information, and perhaps some outdated info it gives an idea of what we're planning. And I'll have to let someone else answer your next question
  16. Thanks for your nice words I do have to disagree with one of the things you said though, while it's true that we're not paid I wouldn't say that there is nothing to gain from being a part of the team. Though I've just been a part of the team for a few months I've already learned a lot, and in some ways most likely grown as a person. So, while it's partly true that we don't have much more than the satisfaction of creating a wonderful game and being a part of such a great team there is a lot to gain on a more personal level.
  17. Well, while I'm not the best person to write about it I just had to say something The editor does already have some cinematic features AFAIK, and was used to produce the video released earlier this year. And while I don't know whether we will add some mythic units it will be easy to do so for anyone with the necessary skills. (More or less modelling and the ability to add some stats etc) In general the game will be possible to turn into a completely different game by someone with the right skills, after all the other game project of WFG, The Last Alliance, will use the same engine as 0 A.D. for a game set in Middle Earth and with more RPG tendencies.
  18. Welcome to the forums! I hope you'll like it and enjoy your stay, there are things to do here while you wait patiently for the game to be released One thing in particular I can recommend is our History Articles section, lots of things to read, and new articles added every month.
  19. Thanks for pointing that out It shows that even the great artists of WFG can make mistakes (Which of course is another reason why the game isn't finished in a couple of weeks; we're not perfect )
  20. Regarding the "choosing gods" question, no there will not be such a feature in the game as we're aiming for a more realistic style. I guess it could be possible for a mod to have this possibility, but I'm not sure, I'll leave that for the programmers to answer
  21. Well, as Tycan said, if it's a bit higher resolution on the 0 I think it's a great idea to put something like this in the downloads section, we don't have much else to download at the moment
  22. Well, let me see if I get your question right, you ask if we're doing this for free, making a full freeware RTS game, and as a hobby, and if we're few? I can't see any money coming, and actually would refuse it if I would, so that's one. Remembering what I read in the Desing Document and seeing how much of it already done, yes it's going to be a full freeware RTS game. Hmm, I do have a real life outside of WFG, so at least for me it's a hobby. Can't be totally sure about everyone though, some people are getting things done at an amazing speed and quality And while I don't remember everyones names I do know we're not many. Over the years there have been quite a few people working on this game though, so it depends on how you look at it I guess Seems as if I can answer yes to all of your questions So now you ought to be impressed Actually I'm impressed with what we've accomplished so far too.
  23. Wow You really put it well, makes one think I think I'll have to read that again sometime soon, don't think I can fathom everything you managed to put into those few lines.
  24. Well, as the game is not ready to be released anytime soon you might be good enough to contribute in texturing too Thanks for the offer, and I hope you remember it when it's time to get it translated And yeah, we're hoping that the game will be translated into a lot of languages. Some languages might be covered in the team, depending on where the people are from, but we will have to rely on the community to provide the other.
  25. Welcome to the forums! 1. Depends on what we got (at least I think so, but you'll have to wait for someone from the Art Department to tell more about that) 2. DDS (but yeah, I'll let the Art Department talk about that, I just repeat what I've seen written) 3. No, at least not at the moment. We are about to make it easier for people to contribute to the games development however, so stay tuned on how you may be a part of this great adventure.
