I would like units to be automatically selected when they leave a ship, as it can be difficult to select them all in the chaos of battle and groups behave weirdly with ships. Is it better to make a mod or a PR for this?

I suffered the same situation. I agree it could be my fault for not looking carefully the game description and winning victory conditions, but nevertheless this is dirty game.
