Boat fixing thread.

I'm opening this thread for all that is linked for boats in ROTE.

In the current state of things, I won't do any animations. If someone feels like creating armatures for them, he can go on.

Sails :

Needs a new logo : Proposal (I will make it smaller, to fit the new sails) :

All boats needs to have rectangular sails like those

We also need this boat (Quinquereme equivalent ) :

The ramming boat does exist :

I've learned the following from my first collaboration with the Chinese Scholars:

1. There is little to no pictorial evidence from Han Ships. The most images that exist are from Osprey and likely inaccurate. However since that is the only source of images, it is justified to use these as reference. Therefore, the existing ships are okay.

2. The Han Chinese certainly did use ramming ships. They were called 'Covered Swoopers'. These Covered Swoopers (or Mêng Chhung) were small ships covered with thick hides (some say rhinoceros hides) to protect them from arrows and other projectiles. Also enemies could not board them.

Thus I would say that we can preserve the current ramming ship but add a thick large tent (built from hides) to it.

I doubt whether we need another warship. The Han already have three warships.

And I think we don't need oars.

If too many ship types is an issue then would it be a good idea to scrap the old tower ship (the one without sails) to make room for the quinquereme equivalent? since they are basically the same except ones bigger and has hammers.

EDIT: Forgot to mention, don't most reconstructions have oars?

The large tower ship wasn't too good anyway.

If the ship has sails then it does not need oars IMHO.

For close boarding and when there is no wind most war ships of the period where dual powered besides if it was a Knarr you would be the first to object

No, I don't think Longships would need oars either, the only thing is that they would seem a bit empty without them right now.

They actually used oars when they needed a little extra UMPH (running away from a bigger ship, for example)

Oars are omnipurpose, Sails ONLY work when there is wind, and if the wind is going in the wrong direction? Tough.

Not every ship in the game has oars (check f.e. merchants and Celt Warships), I haven't heard anyone complain about that.

Can't we reuse an oar rig from another 0AD ship? Then it'd not be so much work anew.
