ZeZar
When 0ad is released? Like 1000 people at least will download it the first hour its out, so what will you do?
fyhuang
Maybe someone will donate a mirror or something?

Aeros
Well, we won't be using our server, that's for sure we'll need all our bandwith just for distributing the game to our own team.We might buy a temporary mirror, but most likely the majority of downloads will be at places like filefront, fileplanet, etc.Oh, and bittorrent will be another big one too. I was suddendly thinking of this ... what about the Beta? Will we have to wait a lot, or what about giving days the testers can download on? Would work ? Aeros
Alphas and Betas will largely be distributed through bittorent. With luck we might be able to get a mirror server for downloads as well.
Zeusthor
I'll be able to donate several hundred gigabytes of bandwidth. It'll probably be enough for betas and alphas, but I don't think I can handle the strain of public release.vivehosting.com for affordable hosting everyone . Aeros
Great, Zeusthor Lol, people on the team, or friends of people on the team'll probably be able to hook us up with some bandwith (about time we start using that trout I say)
ZeZar
Ask on OG network, they have a HUGE bandwith and will probably do that
King Tutankhamun
Would Bit Torrent be that effect for alphas and betas? It seems that it might be slow if noone in online for them to download it.
Ykkrosh
It should be fairly easy to use the web server as a seed for the torrent - with only one person downloading, it would be almost identical to downloading directly from the web site, and it'd be faster/cheaper as soon as more people start downloading. Fire Giant
Hmm, the only problem I can think about regarding BitTorrent is privacy... if somehow the file hash is being leaked, everybody could download it, no ? That might be quite a kind of problem... either we have to be very careful selecting our testers, or we have to find another solution to restrict the users who may download the file. fyhuang
If anyone has an old computer and a broadband connection, you could set up that computer as a server and have basically unlimited bandwidth (provided your ISP lets you...). If enough people are willing to donate old computers to use as temporary servers, it could work out...
Dnas
Umm... I probably sound like an idiot, but... what's BitTorrent?
fyhuang
I'm not totally sure either - join the club!SourceForge's project page says, "A system for distributed download"...
Zeusthor
I doubt there is a need for BT for alphas and betas. but it would really help out for public releases. BitTorrent is a protocol used to download. The cool thing about it is the people that are downloading are sharing their upload capabilities and uploading the part of the file they already have. This minimizes how much bandwidth a site uses up.
deaconwar
Thanks Zeusthor now i get it :self-bash:
Aeros
yeah, Bittorent would be a huge source for downloads on public release, especially for modemers, that way they won't clog the main servers or mirrors. The alpha most likely can be distributed to our VIPs (alpha testers) with no problem, the beta which'll have alot more people will need mirrors and some help from bittorent. For those of you who don't know, bittorent is a program that uses users (people downloading the same file) as the download source for other users - it's like making a mini p2p network just for the file being downloaded, so while you download it you'll be uploading it to other people.Someone said using your old computer for bandwith - yeah that's what bittorent does, just that it's you computer and another 150 who're also downloading the same file at the same time as you, and thus uploading to you. Dnas
So that means other computers are accessing your own?
Ykkrosh
Yes, in a very limited way - as you download a piece of the file from one person, you're sending other pieces of the file back to them. It only uploads from the file which you're currently downloading, rather than sharing everything you've ever downloaded, so it's nicer than most other P2P systems.About security/privacy: There's no way to stop transmission of a downloadable file, so making it public (but hidden) over BT is no worse than having people send copies to their friends over IRC. I think the only way to restrict usage is by having some online verification system whenever someone tries to play it.
friedd0g
why not just RAR the file up and password it ? the password can then be given only to be Alpha and Beta testers..? or for [assword protection paranoia you could use KGB software
fyhuang
CVS would work as well - CVS is also a great version control system . The best security (IMHO anyways) is to provide a password-protected folder with an encrypted and password-protected archive. All with different passwords.Of course, if you turn off indexing and put the file somewhere like:http://www.wildforegames.com/8gh/38htas/q8.../2398hg/oad.exeThat would be just as effective . Aeros
to add to the list of protection methods We should have some sort of CD Key with the game, which we'll give out to only people who we want to test the game.I'm not sure if we'll cary through with this to the final game, but it is a good idea since we'll need a way to identify the users of the game, and thus ban people's CD Keys online because they are idiots and cheat or do stuff like that. Also it'll give us a number of how many people are playing the game
Argalius
Yeah that's a good idea. And about the password with RAR, you can also do that with WinZip.
Fire Giant
But RAR is much more effective at compressing files, so I do choose RAR whenever possible. Besides, RAR can preserve NTFS file permissions, and ZIP can't
