  1. One issue that is intriguing me at the moment is that of genetically-modified food. Here is one article I stumbled upon that raised the issue: Gene-manipulated Seeds: Are We losing Our Food Security Too?

f the spread of GM crops continues at the current pace, within perhaps seven to eight years, the essential food supply of mankind will pass to the corporate control of perhaps three to four giant multinationals. Such power over life and death has never before in history been so concentrated in so few hands. Most shocking is that such a profound policy change is being advanced with almost complete absence of truly independent scientific study, or analysis of long-term possible negative effects of genetically modified foods, sometimes called GMO’s, on either humans or animals.

*it is of course no guarantee that this article is bias-free, and it is European

So what do you think? Are GM foods really dangerous to our health, ruining the enviorment, small (and European) farmers, contribute to greedy multi-nationals? Or are they healthy and help reduce pesticides/herbicides, etc? Or something in between?

Personally I am still formulating an opinion, since I do not like basing a position on one article. If you have any scientific studies please post them too :D

  2. Ah I see I was 10 seconds too late on my post :D

Also stocks can split if it's doing very well. So if there are 100,000 shares out at $90 before a 3-1 split, there would be 300,000 shares at $30 after words.

They now have those stocks that are actually a piece of a stock from top companies (like all of the S&P 500), so you have a diversified portfolio.

  3. Well I'm no broker, but maybe I can explain some things in laymen's terms:

It takes a lot of money to start a company up front, and to get that money the owners ask investors to give them the cash in exchange for part ownership of the company (a stock). As the company makes profits, the value of the company goes up, and so does the stock. People try to buy the stocks when they are low and wait for it to get high to sell it.

When a company goes public it has to answer to the stock-holders (since technically they do own part of the company), and often times all the stock-holders want is more money, even if it's not in the best interest of the company. If you remember the news recently stock-holders voted on overthrowing the Disney CEO Eisner (I didn't vote even though I have some Disney stock).

    Hope that helps :D

  4. Well I watched the Olympics pretty much all day yesterday, it gives me a chance to see some more obscure but no less impressive sports. (Then the Olympics were interrupted by a pre-season football game. go browns)

About those distance runners, my coach said that Ethiopian 'had to have' been on some performance-enhancing drug if he broke 2 WR's in about a week. I personally have no idea on the matter. Too bad about Webb though :D

And why is the US basketball team losing? :D It's because lebron isn't playing, I tell you!

  5. *thinks lovingly of the dot matrix lable printer at work in the library

(we still have those really old computers with the mono-color monitors that refresh very slowly (y) )

    I personally have a color ink-jet all-in-one (hp 1315) and a black/white laserjet 6p

  6. OK I had this same exact problem with Mozilla, and when I shut down EVERY process of mozilla.exe and then click on the icon again to run it, it worked. (y)

The problem went on for a few days (I had to ctrl-alt-delete and shut down all the mozilla.exe processes) but then it went away and hasn't come back.

  7. Hey can someone tell me the difference between Firefox and Mozilla? I have Mozilla right now, but maybe I'll get Firefox on the college computer I'm getting next year if it's better (I know they're both from the same group)

Yes tabbed browsing is wonderful. I like how you can have tabbed bookmarks and tabbed homepages. I also love Mozilla's password manager, Ctrl-Shift-F for Google, Translate page function, and Chatzilla. Who needs IE?

  8. OK here's mine, as you can see my 'desk' is really an old kitchen table, and I have a flat screen monitor! Yes it is a huge waste of a flat screen, but, the insurence company paid for it (y) (actually my old computer was struck by lightening last year and I got this computer from that). It's not really this dark or yellow, I just didn't feel like turning on the flash on my camera.

I also have random college catalogs (right now U of Michigan, Ohio State, and Georgia Tech on the table) and computer stuff guilds. My Bible is in the background behind the monitor, 3DS Max Bible that is (y)

Subwoofer, tower, and multi-function printer are under the table.

  9. Try this website:

    http://www.glencoe.com/sec/worldlanguages/...mps/index.html#

That was my French 4 book, the chapter quizes you can take and score, but it only refers you to the page # of incorrect answers.

    Example: (Quatrième étape)

    1. Nicole donne-t-elle un cadeau à son petit ami?

    a. Oui, elle vous le donne.

    b. Oui, elle la lui donne.

    c. Oui, elle leur donne un cadeau.

    d. Oui, elle lui donne un cadeau.

    19. Je dis à Philippe _____ finir son travail avant de sortir.

    a. y

    b. en

    c. de

    d. à

The book focuses on very specific grammer rules/exceptions

  10. Wow Cornell seems like an interesting college  I like the class names. Pretty much all the schools I've been to are quite technical :P

As for my schedule this year, I'm stuck inside the insidious IB system (jk it's not that bad but I have virtually no choices in courses)...

High Level A1 English, Standard Level B1 French, HL Biology, HL North/South American History, Philosophy, Study Hall, SL Math II, Study Hall.

Got 2 study halls this year :)

  11. Eh Jerry Springer almost ran for Senator in Ohio... luckily he did not (he was mayor of Cincinnati once, he better stay down south :) )

As for my fave shows, in no paticular order:

-Simpsons: good social commentary if you watch carefully, plus funny!

-Monty Python's Flying Circus: Obviously quite old, but is probably some of the best humor out there. Alternately intelligent (like summerize Proust in 15 seconds contest) and outright absurd (Spanish Inquisition). Mostly absurd though. Beautiful, I've seen all 40 some episodes, wish there were more...

-Seinfeld: Just kind of funny I guess

-Engineering Wonders (I think..): was on Discovery before, had stuff like tower city plans in Tokyo to trans-atlantic tunnels. Pretty cool for science freaks like me

-South Park: Shamelessly makes fun of everything.

    -I Love the 80's: no comment B-)

I don't normally watch much TV though, too much other stuff to do.

  12. I shamelessly stole adam's desktop idea, exept I took a picture of myself holding a giant fish and grenade B-)

I also sharpened the mozaics, made a nifty background, and found a fitting commie quote so give me some credit for creative-ability

  13. Well, I have corn fields on one side of my house (corn fights anyone?) and developments on the other. It's nice and quiet in the country, unless of course the forge is burnin' and the blacksmiths are hammerin'

I think I'm gonna go to college in the city though, I just came back from Atlanta and if you get past the horrible traffic and heat, its pretty cool (especially midtown where GT is).

  14. no, I was not involved in any dirt throwing  when I see a cop car I don't throw things at it!

I just thought the stroke thing was funny, I don't know why a something like that would make the front page...

Adam has a fine collection of scanned police blotters, I'm getting mine started since I just got a new scanner.

  15. Well, I was reading through the local weekly fishwrap (newspaper) and I found this interesting news article:

Three local youths are in hot water after an incident July 25 in which they were accused of throwing clumps of dirt at passing motorists in the 600 block of South Chillicothe Road.  According to officers, they were apprehended after one clump of dirt was thrown at a police cruiser, causing damage to the light bar. It was determined four other vehicles were damaged.  Two charges of vehicle vandalism and one charge of curfew violation were filed against each of the youths, who were released to parents. The cases were referred to juvenile court.

Meanwhile, a resident of the 600 block of East Pioneer Trail reported July 24 that bocci balls were used to damage a car door and mailbox. No arrests were made.

Two days later, a bocci ball was found in a ditch in the 900 block of West Garfield Road. It was not known whether the incidents were connected, and the latter bocci ball was taken to the police station for safe keeping.

Well, it certainly makes me feel safer knowing that the police are doing their best in this age of suicide bombers and global terrorism. Oh, and by the way, I have never been in the police blotters yet (to my knowledge)

On the front page, we find out that there is a new pastor in town, summer Bible school is closing down. There is also a picture of a swimmer that says "Stroke, stroke, stroke" (no kidding)

  16. Well, my vote is that this is rubbish :) My instincts tell me that the whole thing is a bit ridiculous, even with a few words that come up every once in awhile. I listened to the desert storm audio clip... at least the first two parts were not convincing (my internet explorer messed up after that :) )

Well I'll post this link, hopefully you all can read it as an opposing viewpoint to this guy's website: Clicky

(from above)The academic world has so far ignored his great discoveries, though he claims that he has the support of some academics who fear to speak out. Mr. Oates bemoans his fate: "Have we not yet learned from the lessons of history? Many of our great discoveries have come from outside of mainstream [sic]. Einstein, for example, was a high school-drop out." (Actually, Einstein was kicked out of high school and eventually finished his schooling in Zurich, including a Ph.D. from the University of Zurich.) His proposals to test his theory have been rejected by universities not because the university establishment is closed-minded, but because Oates' theories belie a profound ignorance of fundamental matters in neuroscience and physiology. Furthermore,  a good chunk of his theory is untestable metaphysics, psychobabble and gobbledygook.

Oh yeah and don't forget the training courses you can take (http://www.reversespeech.com/training_courses.htm):

The cost for this course is $US250 a month for three months. You will also need to purchase a reversing machine (prices range from $US129-$US279), and the Reverse Speech software ($US59.95).

Thats level 1! So for about $800 you are a Reverse Speech Investigator

Level 2, Reverse Speech Analyst is 5 more months of training, or $1,250 (over $2,000 total now)

If you've gone this far, may as well get nine more months of training ($2,250) and become a Reverse Speech Practitioner. At this point, you've spent over 4 grand, but check out all the cool things you can do:

    * The theory of Metaphor Restructuring and the pictorial nature of the unconscious mind.

    * The basics of hypnosis

    * How to induce a relaxed state and gain access to the deepest parts of the unconscious

    * Creating a Metawalk

    * High speed reversal location

    * Hearing reversals consciously

Sorry about the rant, but I really think this is a scam to get gullible peoples money ;)

  17. Of course you can't prove the tooth fairy doesn't exist... no matter where you look she could be somewhere else! However with evolution if you can find evidence that goes against the theory... there you go its disproven. GL though trying... hasn't been done yet.

I know that there MUST be something more to life than this.

What makes you so certain? Existentialists for one seem to think that life is completely absurd/irrational/chaos, and that we should just try to make the best of it (as opposed to nihilism which says 'screw it all!' :) )

  18. I've been checking out the 'atheist' section at the university I work at (believe it or not a Jesuit school has one shelf devoted to atheism :) )

Much of the first half of a book I'm reading sets out to disprove the existence of a god. I could get into it later if anyone wants ;)

But I must say that I often emphasize with Aetheists... mainly because their way of thinking seems more logical (but that's part of faith, it doesn't have to be logical to belive it)

Very interesting observation! I personally believe faith and reason are totally seperate and very much mutually exclusive... so more faith -> less reason. 'Blind' faith is pretty much the only way religion survives, for me at least all arguments for God are blatently falacious (like Pascal's Wager :) )
