The Latin word SAECULUM, when in Spanish medieval texts, was naturally read as [sjeglo] (from where modern Spanish siglo, "century"), but when the reform was introduced (by 1080) SAECULUM was pronounced just like that, [sekulum], and eventually a new caligraphy had to be devised to express the native [sjeglo]: sieglo. Just like when you read KNIGHT you don't pronounce [knIxt] but [nait].

    Quite right a part that they would have read saehkulum (i think, but i may mistake the translitteration of english pronunciation here...)

  2. Hey, i think this topic is getting much close to a "Blut und Boden" (blood and soil: the principle on wich most nationalists based their right to ethinc cleansing their nation in the last century) debate.

    The only thing that comes to my mind right now is that the only right men have about land is that to live on Earth, as long as they do not destroy it, the rest are only claims put up to have an excuse not to endeavour the difficulties of cohabitation and integration among different cultures.
