  1. I have never gotten rid of windows without formating. I would just format the drive because it will clean windows off the drive better and it will be easier then trying to uninstall it. I believe you may be able to somehow if you put in the disk while the OS is running. I don't know though because like i said i haven't tried. Formatting would be the easiest way though.

  2. Yeah, of course i would link you guys. I thought you would never ask. The program i use makes it easy to create fully functional .exe's that are capable of even advanced commands. The program called Autoit is open source and you can use it to compile .exe's for self gain and profit meaning you can make .exe's and sell them without a problem. Here is a link to the site:

    http://www.autoitscript.com/autoit3/

The early versions were used for the automated scripting of installations and other such functions that IT guys would use on coorporate networks. Since then new versions have been created with full functioning GUI's and a ton of advanced features. When you are down there, check out the beta, it has TCP and UDP support along with a bunch of new features like advanced system tray menus and more.

  3. No, i don't believe so. I am not sure exactly how it works because i program in a scripting language. The compiler actually does all the good stuff and makes it very simple. I am messing with the new beta version of the program and it has some new and very cool features like TCP and UDP services for creating TCP and UDP connections. Here is how this script works:

    FileGetShortName($a)

That is it. That is the command. The variable there is based on the user input but that is basically all it is. Similar to javascript or a vbs script.

  4. I have the problem, you have the problem, we all have at some point had that problem. You press the delete key and the file doesn't delete and you get that annoying message, the file was in use and could not be deleted.

It isn't in use because there are no other programs running and you just rebooted your computer. One min ago before you rebooted the computer it told you that the file was in use so you rebooted to try to get the program using it off the memory so that you could delete the file.

The problem, the file doesn't want to delete or you can't get explorer to delete it. The best is that the file may be something like 100MB and you want to get rid of it, but it doesn't delete.

I created a program a couple weeks ago that deletes these files. I tested it out myself on several of the files that were troublesome and it deleted them.

The program is called Force Delete! . Simply drag and drop the problem file on the executable or run the executable and browse for it. It deletes in three phases:

    1) It attempts to put the file in the recycle bin the traditional way to see if it can delete the file since explorer can't sometimes because it just has a knack for that. If this program fails this step it tells you and then it iprompts you to go onto the next step.

    2) It attempts to delete the file a second time directly. When it does this the file isn't placed in the recycle bin and is permanently deleted. If this fails a message pops up telling you that it failed and asks you if you would like to go to the next stop.

    3) This is the unique step that my program takes. It ends explorer and deletes the file. The user is warned of this (prior to it doing this) and is told this could cause errors however unlikely because this happens on a regular basis with explorer crashing anyway. It then runs explorer again and notifies the user if the file was deleted successfully.

That is how my program works and I have used it and have had several friends test it out on their computers with files that wouldn't delete and they told me it works. I thought this was a very useful program. I hope you guys will find it useful too since I hear people complaining about files not being deleted on a regular basis.

    Here is the link:

Yes, i tested it out, no it won't hurt your computer and i will give you the source code if you want to see it to make sure it isn't a virus because you don't trust me.

It is 117KB because it is upx packed.

  5. I personally didn't have any clue that it was that. I just input the address into the program that i made and it gave me the shortened address as:

    C:\PROGRA~1\MI9A48~1\AGEOFE~1\age2_x1\age2_x1.exe

So i found out about it by using the program i made. It uses a special command in the source code that shortens the filenames. I don't know what it does or how it does it, but it apparently asks the OS what the shortened address is on the hard drive and the OS responds. I realized that is asks the OS because if you give it complex addresses that don't exist on the drive, the name isn't shortened. You have to create the path on the actual computer before you use the program so that it can ask the OS what it calls that directory in short.

I hope i made sense. Does that make sense Nathanael?

  6. Yes, you can do that guys, but it doesn't work in bat scripts and probably other scripts. My utility works with everything: bat scripts, shortcuts, and pretty much anything. It is a flawless way to get the shortened addresses for scripts, shortcuts, or when you are writing addresses in programs(source code).

  7. I was working with commands the other day and i was experiencing problems because i was trying to create a spaceless link to:

    C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Age of Empires II\age2_x1\age2_x1.exe

The only problem is that when you are working with commands such as the commands in DOS or the shortcut commands, they don't allow spaces in the addresses or URLs. That can be a problem. The .exe above has 5 spaces in its address. That is a problem. I decided to write a small program that automatically gives you the address or shortened version that doesn't have spaces. It didn't take me long and is only a couple lines of code, but the program is very useful imo. Please check it out.

Once i input the above url into my program, it gave me the following address:

    C:\PROGRA~1\MI9A48~1\AGEOFE~1\age2_x1\age2_x1.exe

I tested the address it gave and it worked. So the program works. I wouldn't have thought that Microsoft Games is shortened to MI9A48~1 but hey, i didn't write the operating system.

To use it simply run the .exe, an input box opens asking you to input the long address with spaces and then once you press ok it gives you the new shortened address and allows you to copy or cut it out of the dialogue box.

Please give me any feedback you guys have including bugs. Thanks and i hope you enjoy this utility.

  8. Thanks for the feedback guys. I am glad you like it. I am currently on a road trip/away and i haven't had much time on the internet lately. I will work on it when i get back later this August. I made it just because changing the icons on all the computers is time consuming and this also works for more computer literate people because they can't run internet explorer even if they type it into run or navigate to its directory. It was interesting that you said some programs use the internet explorer engine to work correctly. I haven't encountered problems where a program wasn't able to use the engine because of this patch. The steam engine for HL2 uses the Internet Explorer engine and i don't recall having problems with that while using this patch. If you are referring to the use of Active X controls then yes, i could see where this would be a problem.

I could make another version of this that would move the internet explorer executable (iexplore.exe) and replace it with itself. It would then receive the commands to open certain programs from other programs that are calling to launch iexplore.exe. I could then make it call firefox and have it give firefox the commands such as the redirection url.

  9. I got mine at Best Buy in the store because they give nice warranties with their products. If anything goes wrong with it in two years, they give me a new one or refund my money. I believe i paid about $270 US for it. It is 40GB. I think this is about 270 us here too but i can't read the details since it is in German.

I like the fact that i have a warranty with mine from the store i bought it from in addition to the manufacturer. I hope i could help Tim. I am going away and may not be back for a while.

@fyhuang: I have a Sound Blaster Audigy 2 card and there is a driver for it but it fails to work.(Yes, i have configured it through the control panel and such)

Edit: I am going away Tim. I will try to stay in contact. I got your IM. If you have a question feel free to email or PM me and i will respond to it ASAP. I am going on a road trip and will be driving across the US. Also, i want to point out that those earbuds in the link above come in both black and white colors. I got the white ones because it matches the player and it was what the store had in stock. :D

  10. I believe there are extraterrestrials. Have they visited us, can they? I don't know. It would be hard to say since they probably wouldn’t make it evident if they did. If they were more intelligent than us they would probably be able understand our thinking as well as probably feel that we would fear them and perhaps destroy ourselves in a war trying to get rid of them. I also feel that the universe has its limit, but that doesn't mean we do. I feel that an object could travel out of the universe. It would make sense since the universe has a general presence of matter and is expanding into an area that has less matter(or none at all). The reason it is expanding is because the universe, as we know it, loves to increase entropy and what better way to increase it than to spread itself further apart into an area with hardly any entropy(the area outside the universe). This would mean that a person in a space ship could easily travel outside of the borders of the universe. What would this area be called? I don't know what it would be called because we don't have a name for it. Why do i think that a person could travel outside of the universe. I think this because a ship with an engine would be able to accelerate the increase of entropy faster than the universe and therefore the person(simply put) would be able to outrun the universe into this space that is outside the universe. Why hasn't anything gone outside of it already(at least we think so)? It is because the universe has everything contained inside of it and the entropy is allowing the galaxies to spread apart without forcing them to leave the universe. Plus, even if they did leave, the area that they left to would also become part of the universe since they take some of the universe with them wherever they go.

  11. A massive spaceship/cruiser that would user state-of-the-art technology by altering time and the gravatational field around it to fly.

It would be the size of a large city and be capable of traveling at the speed of light or exceeding it. It would have the most advanced power reactors, life support system, engines, weapons, shields(you would need this because of the debris in space), and it wouldcould also act as a shelter in case Earth had to be abandoned or a natural disaster called for one. It seems that this one ship would advance our technology. In addition, it would be able to do mild time alterations/travel because it would be capable of such high speeds. The power sources would probably be fussion reactors(lots of them) and the engines would probably be of an advanced gyroscopic design.

  12. I tried to set my computer up as an FTP server but failure only occured. I tried several times but to no avail. I had port 21 forwarded and computers could connect to my FTP server. The only problem is they didn't get a response. So it looks like the computers can send messages to the server but the server can't send messages back to the clients once the connecting computers connect because they seem to time out. I checked i and i know that the FTP servers use port 21 for incoming and 20 for outgoing usually. Maybe my router is being retarded. I tried some passive modes too by setting the IP of my router into the passive field but that also didn't work. I don't know. Maybe i just can't create a server. I am using Cerberus FTP server.

  13. I guess i could do that, but it would be very difficult to do especially with all the firewalls/routers and other security measures people have these days. Windows Messenger file transfer didn't even work for me because i had a router but they fixed that with the newer MSN Messenger. Plus I am new to programming and messing with an internet protocol would be difficult to me. I made this utility to improve the functionality of the MSN Messenger file transfer.

  14. I see your point because i have trillian too, however, the best messenger for the MSN Messenger network is still MSN Messenger. It is newer in design and with the MSN Messenger Plus plugin, it has to be the most powerful messenger program out there. The Plus program can be found at:

    http://www.msgplus.net/

Detailed info about what the Messenger Plus plugin does can be found here:

    http://www.msgplus.net/features.php

It has cool features added to it like Boss Protection(hit a specified hotkey and messenger disapears ), auto accept feature(automatically accepts files from specified contacts while you are afk), Enhanced Notifications, Custom Sound send feature(allows you to send 10 second audio clips to people on messenger with the click of a button), and POP3-Email association. It is free but comes with an optional sponser program. Just say don't install the sponser program when you install it.

  15. OT: I tried linux Frank. It really never worked out for me though. It always failed to detect at least one of my hardware components. I stopped using it for that reason. I use windows only but if i ever have a problem with that, i just use Knoppix because it doesn't require a linux filesystem to boot off of since it is on a disk and it also detects NTFS filesystems as well as being able to read them. Knoppix also has problems detecting my sound card like all the other versions of linux. My printer is on a LAN and has its own printserver built into its Jet Direct card which there are no linux drivers for as well. So i was forced to go back to windowz.

  16. Explorer lets you open the drive, but it doesn't let you close it. At least it doesn't allow me to close my drives. It was like this on my old computer though too so it can't be my computer. Windows XP just doesn't like to close drives but it has no problem opening them. I made this program to open and close the specified cd drive.
