  1. I agree with almost everything. (Fonts and colors should be uniform IMHO).

Just wanted to remark there's more to this than just art, it's supposed to be a design that people find easy to understand and useful. I think users are not likely to refer often to the history of each civ but they may very well want to double-check one of the civ bonuses. Hence I took away from the "screen real estate" for the history section and placed it at the bottom.

  2. My only comment is usability-related. This is nothing less than great for new players but after a few games there should be an opt-out option.

Also there is a big difference between historical background, which is pure education/entertainment, and the civ bonuses, which is important info for decision-making that new players may want at their fingertips even when they become experienced players. So maybe some sort of three-tiered system is worth thinking about - One that's fastest but least informative (like the current version), one that's most complete (like what you're proposing) and one that provides quick reference, or a cheat sheet. (Think the cheat sheet that shows up in Google Reader when you hit the question mark).

  3. Forud, thanks for your contribution, it certainly looks like you know your stuff. However, I recommend you please write more clearly, it is hard to keep track of your corrections.

I suggest for each correction you write:

    1. What the name of the unit is in English

    2. The current (incorrect) Persian translation

    3. Your suggested translation

    4. Any comments you'd like to add, like what the original mistake was, how your suggestion corrects it, any doubts you may have about your correction, how the word looks like in the modern (Arabized) Persian writing system, interesting background details that have to do with history or the Persian language etc.

  4. The top goal of a tutorial campaign is to let complete novices learn how to play the game as easily as possible. That means eliminating unnecessary complexity, like Sophokles mentioned, and starting from the absolute very basics, which might entail having a narrator hold the user's hand and order them around, at least at the beginning. (I am in college and unfortunately I see bad teaching every day ;))

So although we want the game to be fun for experienced RTS players, the tutorial campaign is not the place to accomplish that. This goal is better served in other campaigns that might be bundled with the game, in user-generated scenarios and campaigns, and in multiplayer gameplay.

Why dawn of civilization and not the fall of Rome? Teaching the game should start with teaching how to manage the simplest units, like civilians, in the earliest phase of settlements, which is a village. From there the user will learn about towns, cities, building armies and such. The dawn of a civilization is a good historical background for this.

There's no word yet on the number of scenarios in the campaign. Maybe we'll manage to bundle it all into one scenario, but that's a long time off.

  6. Plus, the first things that need to be taught in the game are really basic - micromanaging citizens, using resources, farming and stuff like that. That doesn't really tie in with the fall of the republic - we'd have to start with a story of a dawn of a civilization, like Rome, Greece or Persia.

So it might be a cool campaign but not for the tutorial campaign, which imho would be the first priority.

  7. Do we really have any history majors here? :\ I think our top history guy is actually in accounting.

I'm a biology major so I can't really tell you much about history, but both my parents are Ph.D's and I have looked a lot into grad school recently. It seems to me that most historians have academic posts. You need to study many years to be able to compete for those, and while they're stable jobs, they are increasingly rare, especially in the social sciences and humanities. Often academics have to agree to teach in small, remote universities to make a living in their profession.

Search Amazon or your local library for books about jobs in history or the liberal arts. Also look at places like the US News and World Report or the Times Educational Supplement for ratings of colleges in the US and worldwide, they have ratings by subject area too. (Naturally, places like Harvard and Oxford will top the list, but maybe a state university will be the best in your favorite sub-specialty of history. It would take a historian to tell you that, though).

P.S. Note the difference between history and archaeology - I know that in Israel those are different majors and different professions. I think archaeologists are mostly academics too, though.

    Good luck!
