  1. I know it's a wee early, but all RTS forums need a thread like this Here we can discuss and share strategies and tactics and also offer help to new members requiring assitance. What would be nice is if someone can compilie a list of unit vs. unit spectrum and provide their strengths and weaknesses. Also, looking at the new AIs coming soon, we can compile a list of tactics on how to defeat them.
  2. The only other Medieval RTS that looks interesting, would be Chris Taylor's Kings and Castles. http://gaspowered.com/kingsandcastles/ Still under development
  3. I pretty much have played most of them. The ones that I have played the most and are also the ones that I enjoy include -- AoE/AoE II -- AoM -- Empire Earth I/II Rise of Nations for me was alright... It tended to be abit shallow and I wasn't used to it's plain style over an AoE type game. Empire Earth II could of been better though. It lacked many things EE I had. And it's graphics weren't totally that great either. Empire Earth III And Age of Empires III I would have to say are epic fails and really disapointed a lot of poeple including me. Civilization is so much like "The Settlers", big units that are level with tree heights isn't exactly... normal. So I recommend these RTS games for your grandmothers and aunties those units they can see very well. Cheers to the grandmas. YOu might want to throw EE III in there too, a nostalgic game that simulates a neo version of WoW... lolz 0 A.D. I find, matches my prefernces for an RTS. Accurate unit models, unique language, and the fact that's set in ancient history which I like and so many RTS games lack that era. There's so much focus and emphasis layed on Medieval times which is really boring and very little attention is given to the ancient times. Which is a serious let down. 0 A.D. has many features that lacked hugely in AoE games. I also like the unit sizes in relation to buildings and trees, the minor things that really stand out, I think make 0 A.D. more realistic than your RTS games on the market. Something that I really like about 0 A.D. is that all civ units are unique and this gives great distinguishable gameplay and sets civs more apart from eachother. Also another realistic facet for this RTS. What seems wierd in so many RTS games is that when playing Greeks, Romans, or any advanced nation against barbarian nations they also can train the same shiny hoplites and infantry as you, and this really not real and something I found to be irritating. So again these little things that the creators here have mended into an art of realism is truly apprecitated by picky impossible individuals like me that pay great attention to detail. I have also played TBS games with the likes of RTW etc. Medieval TW again bores me. And RTW II looks interesting by far. But in RTS you have greater freedom in my opinion, that you are in control live without reverting to a menu to manage situations etc etc.
  4. Yeah, it's a mystery. And what we know of the Etruscans is very vivid. But a consensus amongst modern historians share the common opinions of old historians Herodotus and have to believe that the Estruscans were once Phoenicians. This is because there is a lot of Phoenician culture and influence imbued in Etruscan art and the rivalry they had with them tells another story. I believe they were Phoenicians, but it's impossible to assert this as factual because today, we don't have anything to prove this. So anything that is pretty much been said about them is only based on speculation. They appeared to have also brought Hellenistic culture with them when they arrived in Italy. But they still traded and there is evidence that had been taught by the Greeks. The Greeks even write about this. LOL .... Classic! And that document you written is nice dude. Quite informative.
  5. Here's a guy that is devoting himself to contribute in the coding side. I think he needs a better, more decent welcome
  6. There may be a corrupt file, I'm just guessing. What I would do from here is, unstall the game and delete the remaining files in the correct path and reinstall fresh. Right click on 0 AD and select "Run as administrator", should be able to work. If it doesn't, let us know the results and if needs be, provide with a screenshot of the error
  7. The early Etruscans were Phoenicians that settled in Umbria north east Italy. They brought a lot of Hellenistic influence with them, but they weren't as Greek as more southern tribes of Italy.
  8. My statement about the Seleucids was not implied that I wasn't in support of them being added. Regardless of which civilization gets added first is irrelevant, Etruscans, Samnites or Seleucids. Infact I also want to see the Seleucids in the game. But the levels of importance on one faction over the other is relative. What would Rome be without the Etruscans or what would the people in the Seleucid empire be without them? If I had to pick the most important one... Honestly I would choose the Etruscans. Why? Because had they not been there, we would see a total different image that Rome had. We would see a totally different language as evident of the fact that Latin was very much influenced by the Etruscans and their art and culture which lead down the verge of saying would Rome of achieved an Empire for the long period it had without that influence? That said, the Seleucids on the other hand, wouldn't of been that important. Greece would of still remained dominantly Hellenistic and much of the middle east would be Persian? So it's what significance or importance are we looking at here?
  9. Hellenism was stamped into the middle eastern cultures when Alexander arrived. The Seleucids were a short lived empire that ultimately got eaten up by the factions they ingested from the Macedonians. I would say in terms of what culture gave more to the world... I would say the Etruscans. The Etruscans also gave to Rome lots and I think many people fail to recognize that. You cannot blame this lack of emphasis on the smaller Latin civs because they got swallowed up by Rome in that they totally consumed them into their own. Later though other external integrations destroyed various literature or anything that contained influence from these civilizations, deeming them evil and heathen. In my honest opinion, more emphasis needs to be layed on the Latin tribes.
  10. Correct. Although, they weren't "Achaemenid" in that sense, They were still persians without a Government. But there were uprisings and things happening. I don't really see the point in creating a separate Persian civilization as the very term "Achaemenid" was a Latin abbreviation for "old Persian". The Persians already have a civilization and in the time era of the game it was in the span of 500 BCE. But however, I will agree that the Seleucids be added. They were a by-product of Alxeanders Empire. So no this wouldn't make sense if it was added. Waste of time. We already have Persians. That's why I suggested more Latin tribes/civs. So we can have a face off of Samnites Vs. Romans Vs. Etruscans... Maybe Umbrians??? Personally the more civs we have in this game the better... 0 A.D. should not become stagnated with limitations. AoE was great because it lots of civs...But too few units... and they didn't look correct :/ Empire Earth sucks because Civilizations? That's a laugh and unique units most of them were only available in the bloody map editor. 0 A.D. is nice because here we getting the best of both worlds... More civs and more units.
  11. Your specs maybe rated low, but I don't see it as a problem. I can run 0 A.D. on a Athlon 4000+ Santiago core (Single) with a 512 stick no problem. Graphics, a GT 7800 256MB lol and 9500 GT (nVidia) 1GB (Old spec grade that is) Your current OS (i.e. Win XP) is either virused or you running to many processes on that machine. Try shutting down all uneeded processes via Crt+Alt+Del in the task manager or Start/Run/Msconfig to stop them there and from starting on system boot. That includes shutting down other programs running along side 0 A.D. Do a virus scan unless you sure that your machine is clean and no unwanted code in on it, a system usage monitor in the task manager will show you the current CPU usage. You might want to provide that to us as well. However, if you can't upgrade anytime soon, I will suggest that if you have any USB stick about, you need to use them as the extra RAM in the time being. If your HDD is full this will greatly slow the performance alot too. Always keep it at 78% full. If that doesn't work, report back
  12. Yeah they didn't against the Carthaginians. Although still a republic Julius Caesar used onagers in the siege of Gergovia and Alesia. This spans from 52 BCE onwards. That's the only exception though regards to the onagers in this era.
  13. Scutum (Roman) The Famous Roman Shield. Pilum Roman Javelin. Hoplon/Aspis (Greek ὅπλον) The Greek Round Shield. Hence the Greek soldiers name "Hoplite* derives from the hoplon shield. Lorica Squamata Roman scalemail armour. Galea (Roman helmet) Pugio (Roman Dagger)
  14. Samnites Please add this great civ. The Samnites were very powerful unity of tribes in Italia. And it was them that defeated Hannibal first. The Samnites had powerful infantry and cavalry. Typical Samnite warrior:
  15. The Etruscans are essentially a division of Phoenicians that settled in Umbria in north east Italia. Much of their literature got destroyed and even just blended into Roman society. This dilution has erased nearly all accounts of these great peoples. The Etruscans, what we do know evident of several artifacts and from various Greek historians, were a great sea ferring people. They won many battles in the Terrhyian sea and controlled a great trade rout. Sadly, the Greek descriptions and literature about the Etruscans are one sided, biased and not really accurate. This is because the Greeks saw these people as pirates and barbaric. Same like Rome saw Gaul. Religion was also an important factor in this destruction of Etruscan literature and form of cultural evidence that existed. The common conception of the time was the Etruscans were "evil" and "sons of the devil". Their influence in art, language, and architecture however prevailed, and was implemented into Roman society which lasted well into the middle ages in Italy. Most of Latin is a composition of Etruscan. Etruscan units for 0.A.D. would like these.
  16. As far historical units are concerned that needs to be higher than any RTS on and off the market... darn straight. I like 0.A.D. because one feels the world in a way that it takes you back to antiquity, the music, the feel, the graphics all form this experience and it's trully if I had to give it a word, beuatiful. It's a beautiful game. I think the water and rivers. lakes in the game are nice, I have not seen realistic graphics in a RTS like I have seen in 0.A.D. Yes there are a few things that need work.Gameplay Unit Editing Civilizations Extra Buildings But 0.A.D. is still being developed. One needs to understand... that Rome was not built in a day
  17. Will we see the Imperial Romans in XIII? Maybe we can start creating Legionaries... You have no idea how AOE deprived me of this.... Don't forget the Roman auxilia units... AND the onagers....
  18. Steam can go get stuffed. They suck. And funny enough, I was just complaining about the Greek hoplites in my thread above. This would be a fantastic "Mod utility" as I come to understand, that's what you asking for? In a way it poses as something easy for the average user to mess around with, editing untis and textures here and there, but the game seems very easy to mod. But still it's a cool idea.
  19. I have been looking at the different hellenos civilizations available, (e.g. Macedonians, Spartans, Athenians), but I would also like to see, are Latin ones as well. Samnites Samnites were composed of four tribes that resided in Samnium, Pentri, Caraceni, Caudini, Hirpini. Saminum was a unity of these tribes and they were very strong in early history of Italia. A typical Samnite soldier The Samnites had powerful cavalry too. Etruscans Many people can't understand the mysterious Etruscans... These people contributed so much to the Roman civilization and to Gaul. They were even stronger than both Roman and Saminium and even predated the Samnites and Romans. A typical Etruscan warrior Similar in looks to the Babalonian spearmen. ______________________________________ That's as far as civilizations go, seen as though this fits in the time of 0.A.D. This gives the Latin civs more depth. I would also suggest that the Thracians be added as a separate civ. They were a great civ too and fought many battles with Greece, Rome, and the Gauls. Persians too. The Romans need an auxilia unit Afterall these units defended virtually all of Rome's borders. The auxilia unit is a spearmen with an oval shield and wore lorica hamata (i.e. Chainmail) They are a tough unit those these units in 0.A.D. need to be strong but very cheap. ______________________________________________________________________ Now the current Greek hoplite needs some more work done in my opinion. The model picture looks no where near that of the unit you create. The hoplite is distinctive in the looks, and the helmet normally had multi coloured crests, Sparta had red mainly. The corinthinian helmet shown in the game doesn't look at all correct. I was disapointed with this though... It needs fine work to get that distinctive hoplite look The front of the unit should look like this. ____________________________________________ Now for the AIs We need an Ai that is a diplomatic one. The ability to make alliance and play like that. To give that AoE feel and AI that taunts you as well and if you ignore it attacks you sort of thing. The Ais need more life in them. But really a diplomatic AI would be awesome.
  20. Regards to the garrison of to few troops in a Roman army camp. Construct a Roman fort like this: You looking at a garrison of over 130 troops
  21. Tacitus accounts them. It's now widely accepted that onagers started appearing 60-50 BCE. Philo of Byzantium even mentions them in that time frame. Wikipedia now states that too.
  22. In which time the Romans were the best besiegers in Europe. Onagers, sieg towers were very much present in that time. Onagers in round about 50 BCE Not to be confused with the mangonel . The Onager

I saw someone on the forums say something about it. I don't remember who it was. And I do know the game is under construction Ah, was that Greek? I thought it was old Latin. But it sounds very nice. Specially the female voices.
  24. Lion.Kanzen mentioned a onager? I'm surprised the Romans don't have one... The Roman also need to be able to make siege towers... Glorious Rome could make anything. But those things in particular

I should also mention that someone said that there is unique language and voices for different civilizations? I only hear one on all of them. Should there only be one? Or unique voices for each civilization? I'm not sure on this.
