1. I would wager that for ranged units atop-deck to attack enemy ships, their ship need not be "pointing" in that direction. Indeed this would be unlike AOK.
2. I understand where you're coming from, but there has been a design change in the Hellenes civ that kind of alters the way you'd look at the Hellenes civ from a historical perspective. Besides, as you point out, Helots and Peroikoi performed as Hoplites during the Peloponnesian War, justifying keeping the "standard" hoplites for the "Spartan" player even though the player has decided to train a bunch of Spartiates.
3. A Spartiate is a Spartiate. A Spartiate is a Spartan male Citizen. The unit isn't a "Spartan Hoplite."
4. You won't have any problems differentiating different types of units. A Spartiate will look different than a standard Hoplite and vice versa. Besides, most games take a learning curve to be able to tell these things at a quick glance anyway.
5. Not to reveal *too* much, but Jason and I (and Jason and Philip, I believe) kicked around ideas for post-release 0 A.D. and although nothing is concrete we came up with a few possible tidbits: a.) Mini-expansions: Add some new game features, maybe a few new units. Maybe add more branches to existing civs, etc. b.) 0 AD 1.5, 1.6, 1.7: Add new graphics features every year or so as our expertise grows to be able to do such things. This is in addition to patches. It's kind of like a huge patch. But of course, how we will do these things and if we will be capable at all of doing these things is up in the air right now. I just think it's really cool that we have the ability to possibly break the mold in the way a computer title is supported by its developer. Jason had some really good ideas.
6. AI! Yes! We have some of the best AI programmers not already employed by the industry! I am sure they will not disappoint. Secondly, welcome to the forums. Keep requesting more screenshots! It's been my experience the more the community asks for, the more Jason (aka Wijitmaker) allows me to give you. And last, but not least, I am delighted we have someone in the community from Africa. I am sure that continent (Antarctica aside) is the least represented here in our community. It's nice to see us human beings coming together.
7. I have made a pact with myself and the holy goddess, that if I ever win the lottery, I'll use a large portion of it for philanthropic reasons, and then buy an Aston Martin. And, BTW, the Magnum looks like a hearse.
8. The problem with English is that it's influenced by so many other languages: Ancient Celtic/Gaelic Latin Anglo/Saxon Norse French
9. I am sure I could interview a hundred people in Europe, edit out all the smart ones, and then come up with a similar movie.
10. Yeah, the funniest part about it is that all the smart people are edited out of the street video.
11. http://www.wildfiregames.com/~art/screenshots/pond-battle-uberwar-1600x1200-thumb.jpg We are pleased to give you a brand new high resolution screenshot showcasing the large amount of work we have put into the game over the past two months. The opportunity came to release the screenshot after a flurry of activity from many of our staff departments. We hope you enjoy this mid-month screenshot release! Check out the full-size screenshot here.
12. I think you will find "Actor Editor" extremely powerful. So powerful, and yet so easy to program, and so easy to use, that it's a wonder a company like Ensemble Studios doesn't just throw something like that into AOE3...
13. Shaka, when the walls fell... http://www.lbdb.com/TMDisplayWar.cfm?WID=55
14. I hardly see why there needed to be a specific law against phishing. There are already laws on the books against fraud. I think it's just another case of government trying to look like its doing something about a problem, while underenforcing the laws that are currently on the books!
15. I assume they are security features.
16. The problem is balancing 10+ unique civs. We went with a low civilization count in order to make each civ as unique as possible. We also chose the 6 most important civs in the Mediterannean world at that time (500BC - 1BC).
17. Brian is definately on the right track. I don't think anyone is saying a 1000 trigger RPG scenario can be made into an RMS dynamically with a click of a button (could be done with extensive scripting by hand, but not with a direct conversion from scn to rms). However, scenarios with terrain, start points, and basic "modify protounit" triggers and simple Victory Conditions could be done in the way Brian describes.
18. WOW... never thought of that before... designing AIs to fight against each other is a GREAT idea... so good I think it's something we can officially support when the game is released.
19. It can be done.... just not sure with our capabilities.
20. Actually, the zoom need only take roughly 1-2 secs.
21. godlike - why would you have to "wait"? Like CheeZy said, the zoom is real-time. You can still command units and ships while the zoom is occuring.
22. Naval battles were very hard to maneuver in real life, so it stands to reason if one were to try to simulate that experience in some way, then yeah, ships would be big and clumsy (not necessarily unresponsive, there's a fine line there). And I agree with godlike; I hated the look of a little transport ship unloading 20 elephants, each ele being bigger than the ship! AOE, AOK, and AOM had this problem. In reality (ancient times), purely transport ships were usually bigger than the fighting ships, not smaller. The Persians actually invented new technologies in order to transport entire cavalry squadrons across the sea in large galleys. These ships weren't the size of a rowboat (AOX) either. In 0 A.D. we hope to scale up the ships significantly, yet not make them so big as to fill up the screen and not be maneuverable on what would essentially become a puddle of water on most maps (instead of an ocean or large river the bodies of water are supposed to represent). I think ES finally got their ships scale right. Not too big. Not too small. I think they could easily go about 10-20% bigger and still work fine, but no bigger than that. All I know, is I hope the days of toy boats (AOE-AOK-AOM) are over.
