Random Maps!
Mythos_Ruler replied to historic_bruno's topic in Game Development & Technical Discussion
Looking at a map's XML, I can start to see how "POGs" could be possible. <Entities> <Entity uid="13"> <Template>gaia/flora_tree_carob</Template> <Player>0</Player> <Position x="212.539" z="506.22016"/> <Orientation y="2.35621"/> </Entity> <Entity uid="15"> <Template>gaia/flora_tree_carob</Template> <Player>0</Player> <Position x="262.94837" z="499.05585"/> <Orientation y="1.01987"/> </Entity> <Entity uid="24"> <Template>gaia/flora_tree_carob</Template> <Player>0</Player> <Position x="206.7829" z="477.50257"/> <Orientation y="-1.5824"/> </Entity> <Entity uid="26"> <Template>gaia/flora_tree_carob</Template> <Player>0</Player> <Position x="253.0978" z="522.48066"/> <Orientation y="-1.6237"/> </Entity> Each entity shows a position and orientation. In a POG this could be relative to the boundaries of the POG. Once you place a POG then those positions and orientations are recalculated for the map. If we wanted to go super cool, we could still have these placed items be connected in an underlying way so that you could hold ALT and re-drag the POG after its already been placed, even if you've already repositioned (or deleted) some of the individual items. Something like that would be good for custom scenarios. Now, POGs for random maps would be awesome because a script could place a variety of POGs to give a nice hand crafted feel. What are POGs? Premade Object Groups, a concept I came up with some years ago. Basically a designer could create a small "map" in Atlas, place some objects in an aesthetically pleasing way, like a vignette, then save that "map" as a POG, which can then be used later, either by the designer (or other designers--I could envision "POG Packs"!) or called by random map scripts. I suggest POG mode would have a standard length and width so that POGs don't get too massive, or a small number of standard sizes. -
Yeah, double and triple click, plus band boxing would be nice additions to Atlas.

This.

According to Google translate:
-
I think that would be a button beneath the unit portrait. There's also a little icon already committed for it.
-
I like it. It's kinda sparse, but I appreciate your attention to scale. The sun may be a little too low for good shadows though.
-
I was just thinking basic formations.... Line, Box, Column.
-
I think it would be cool to be able to set the 'default' stances of different types of units even before a match. You could even save these under different presets. Call them "Play Styles" and bundle them with other pre-configurable things too, like hotkey sets, etc.
-
In that case you'd probably use "Stand Ground." You would want them to fight back if discovered and attacked, right?
-
If we include splash damage/friendly fire, then they would act as siege onagers acted in AOK:The Conquerors -- they would not auto-fire when friendly troops are in the way (they would fire if tasked to do so, though). No need for "passive stance" to be manually selected in this case.
-
Yeah, we will need to create custom formations for boats. That looks pretty ugly!

German 0 A. D. Fansite

Try this for a parchment background. http://opengameart.org/sites/default/files/parchment.png It is very high res. Also, when the site is up, go ahead and ask us for an interview and we'll probably grant you one. There are a lot of German players and modders out there and we'd like to reach out to them. -

I don't think it would be too difficult to distribute "exclusive!" screenshots when people ask for them, as long as the recipient websites redistribute them as CC-BY-SA. So, if you're writing a new article for your site and would like a screenshot to accompany it, then let us know and if we (most likely me) have time we'd gladly whip up a screenshot of existing PUBLIC assets (no screenshots of unreleased assets, sorry ). -
I like this a lot. Maybe make a webpage?

Unit And Building Names

So, it might be possible to just use Celtic for the Iberian words. -
Civ: Macedonians (Macedones, Seleucids, Ptolemies)

Fixed all references from "Super" units to Champion Units. -
Persia is coming, rest assured. It's the Romans who are the least done. The Roman units are complete for the most part, but their structures are an absolute mess. Both Carthage and Persia are in relatively good states, they just need a lot of updating and tweaking.

Civ: Hellenes (Athenians, Spartans, Thebans, Syracusans)
Mythos_Ruler replied to Mythos_Ruler's topic in Game Modification
Wanted to give the Cretan Archers to the Macedonians, since they are well known to have gone with Alexander on his anabasis, and to have fought on both sides of many of the Successor conflicts as mercenaries. However, it's not totally out of the realm of possibility to give Cretan Archers to both Macedonia and Greece. -
Unit And Building Names
Mythos_Ruler replied to Davarish's topic in Game Development & Technical Discussion
I'd be tempted to use the Roman words for the units and such, where we have references, because they are so well known, e.g. "Devotio" and "Caetrati." Or perhaps the Romanized names could be the <GenericName> of those units. -

I think the starting Civ Centre should be pointing toward the bottom right corner of the screen. This is the default "front" for buildings. -
Civ: Macedonians (Macedones, Seleucids, Ptolemies)
Mythos_Ruler replied to Mythos_Ruler's topic in Game Modification
I put 3 in because I couldn't choose just 2. It is very possible to have 6 Champion Units per faction if we wanted to. We just decided to make only 2 standard. Oh, and I recognize your awesomeness in modding new units. Ave SMST! -

This may fancy your interest: http://www.press.umich.edu/pdf/0472110640.pdf I have also updated a lot of stuff in the faction profile. Not done yet though. Probably 99% done. Sicilian League heroes need Histories and Specials. EDIT: Hero Histories and Specials all done. -

Oh, it's not done yet. The heroes still need done up. -
This should tell you all you want to know about Stances. http://www.wildfiregames.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=13725 EDIT: That thread details the ideal behavior of each stance. However, the current implementation needs tweaking. It mostly works in Alpha 6, though, so that thread is still relevant.

Unit And Building Names
Mythos_Ruler replied to Davarish's topic in Game Development & Technical Discussion
We've decided to go with a new <GenericName> and <SpecificName> paradigm. So, for instance: * Generic Name: Macedonian Pikeman. * Specific Name: Pezhetairos. * Generic Name: Cretan Archer. * Specific Name: Toxotes Kretikoi. Those come from here, my Macedonian faction profile: http://www.wildfiregames.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=13560 It would be nice to get constructive criticism of the Greek words contained therein.
