One could do it either way. So, either edit the hero's template to give him the extra speed stat directly, or have the aura affect the class "Hero" too. 

Mixins are a great way of adding extra changes or details to child templates without having to edit the child templates too much. The WFG team has really designed a very very powerful system of managing the game's entities. Mixins have yet to be utilized to their fullest extent, but the game already has a bunch of good examples of how it works. You can even use multiple mixins.
