===[COMMITTED]=== Hawk

I wanted to do a bird, so this time it's just a decorative animal.

Very low poly, 134 faces (if its just going to be flying, no more should be needed).

I just put on some half-assed texture to try the alpha for the feathers (the texture is just projected from photo from underneath! it has claws on its back now :)

Added a basic rig to it as well so i could pose it.

Looks really nice!

Edit2: I sent him an email asking if he would consider dropping NC on those two photos.

Most of the photographers I've contacted in the past have agreed to release their textures for use in 0 A.D., hopefully it's the same for this one. Providing a preview render of the model usually helps in these circumstances too :)

I like the second skin better.

Because it is the most common hawk in Europe, the common buzzard. But yeah nobody is going to notice that only nature fanatics like me. *wink* *wink*

Though I'm not a twitcher (bird watcher). Who can tell any bird apart.

The first skin is the bottom on both sides. Clearly can't be used!

Still no response from flickr, so we can't use the second texture (yet).

It's really difficult to find good references for birds, with their wings out, from above. Those kind of photos just don't happen. If you find a good clear shot of the top part of a wing, and the same from below, I could make a new bird in a few minutes. Finding photos (with CC-BY-SA) is the hard part.

This is the same for modeling as well. If I just find a clean profile picture then I can just finish upt he model in no-time. Finding a shot from the front or above, combined with a profile shot is where I spend 50% of the time (feel free to help out there if you want to see a specific animal done)

I think I can help. There's a Dutch site about animal reporting, I think all the pictures are free to use unless marked (I can ask on the forum if needed, I have an account). Let me show:

http://waarneming.nl...ang=en&local=nl (I hope it is now set to English so you can read)

Do these help:

http://waarneming.nl...w/6/4500096.jpg

http://waarneming.nl...w/2/4534432.jpg

http://waarneming.nl...w/3/4500093.jpg

http://waarneming.nl...w/6/4639876.jpg

You can set activity to flying to look for photos for flying. If you want I can look for more, just tell me what you need exactly.

I'll look for one above.

Any artistic work is copyrighted by default per the Berne Convention. So unless explicitly marked as being under a CC-BY-SA compatible license, we can't use them (asking for special permission can work, but is not ideal).

Yes, you are right sadly:

"Op alle multimedia (foto’s, geluiden) op Waarneming.nl en gekoppelde is auteursrecht van toepassing.Tenzij anders aangegeven heeft u expliciete toestemming van de auteur nodig voor gebruik van multimedia."

Translated:

"On all multimedia (photos, sounds) on Waarneming.nl and (bla bla) is copyrighted. Unless indicated otherwise you'll need the permission of the author for the use of multimedia"

It's so strange that at school we have permission to use images in our works as long as we tell the source.

I have a Taxidermy common buzzard, a dead one, at home. With spread wings. How about I make pictures of it?

...snip...

I'm afraid none of those are good enough. It's relatively simple to find shots from underneath, but that's actually less important (we will be seeing the birds from above in 0AD anyway).

Maybe the second one, but the noisy background (the bike) makes it less than ideal.

The perfect shots are basically like the ones I used as reference. Hard to find. I'm not even sure if I managed to match the same bird species on both sides!

If you find some really good photos, which aren't explicitly licensed as something CC-BY-SA compatible, you can always ask them.

I recomment searching on

http://commons.wikim.../wiki/Main_Page

and

http://www.flickr.com/search/advanced/

with the all three CC-boxes checked (which means only CC-BY-SA content)

How about the Taxidermy common buzzard I have at home? Would it be good if I made pictures of it?

Though I just looked, he is kind of dying and the wings are not fully spread.

Oops, why did I look for underneath. Lol. I guess it's time to go to bed.

That's better than nothing! Also, being artists, we need to actually do some art (instead of always cribbing textures from photos), so we can draw in the feathers we need if necessary.

Tommorow I'll make pictures. He is actually not that bad. The features at the end are a bit err... how do you say... well they used to be better. But nothing too bad.

The middle is only partly visible, but I think that should be able to overcome with drawing.

Ok, I got some pictures. This is a common buzzard (good choice sinds it lives roughly everywhere the mod is set in). I also have a much better looking one, but that one doesn't have it's wings unfolded. But if needed I could also make pictures of that one or additional ones of this one.

Also about buzzards, rough legged buzzards and common buzzards are basicly the same, only the rough legged buzzard "has panties on".

There are also many variations of common buzzards, no one really looks the same. Some are even white for example.

Some pointers (for projection painting)

* Please show the entire object in one shot. Piecing it together is really hard. Closeups aren't really necessary here.

* For alpha channels, one needs a clean background color. Like a green-screen in movies, so that the alpha channel can be made automatically. In these photos one would have to do it manually.

This poor old thing looks a bit rough though. I'm not sure if its the best choice for the texture, there are better photos of living birds.

Yeah it is rough.

I can make a picture of the whole thing on only the floor if you think it's worth it. But I think it would be better if I searched on Flickr for good pictures. The problem is that shots of above are really rare.

I've never seen a single colored floor ever, so that's unlikely to be a good idea. If its the carpet seen in the photos above that would make an awful "green-screen".

I will search for pictures later. But I can't promise to find anything good. Since above pictures are rare.

Offtopic: *whispers to Micket* Irish wolfhound for the Britons *whisper* (if you like, and if more important animals are done)

I just committed an animated (basic flying anim) falcon/hawk/raptor with 2 variations based on Unarmed's photos and a few other public domain photographs.

If someone wants to improve on that (dirty work), here are the files.
