Weapon Textures

Recommended Posts

Ok, for this one you have 75 or so weapons to texture. There are multiple variations and they are all on one texture. Here is something you can work with:

http://www.wildfiregames.com/~art/wijit/weapons.zip

That is the 3ds file

http://www.wildfiregames.com/~art/wijit/weapons.rar

This is the .psd file I started working on (its very rough).

The variations I'm looking for are different shades of wood, different variety in metal (old, rusty, new, decorative, etc...) and blood.

I imagine you'll have to work with Paul on these to get the right blends of variety for history.

Cool! That looks fun. Going to have to make some wood brushes then.

Hmm.. I'm going to try to accomplish this near-impossible goal: For each new task I get, make at least one new brush for it. Last time it was the hair, and now it's wood and maybe more.

Okay then, I'll see if I can manage to find some way to talk to Paul.

Worked on Celtic swords.

How's this?

About the shine not lining up: It lines up in the UV map. I think GMAX just acts weird sometimes.

EDIT: Or does it.... aha! The UV maps are slightly weird in a few verts. I'll go ahead and fix that if it's alright with you. Or is this intentional?

And theres this strange thing with the jabber swords only being half-made. The other half is missing.

Looking good man, looking good :)

Go ahead and fix the files as needed for the uvmaps. When I first did that I did it in a very very rushed job. The 'jabber swords' should be complete... I wonder if some of the faces got lost in the 3ds file or maybe thier normals are flipped wrong? Do what you need to do to fix them though.

Oh!!! Jabbers = Akinakes, a Persian short sword :) They usually had bronze hilts and pommels, maybe iron in more northern versions. Grips could be bronze or conceivabley brown, black, or red leather.

Plus the early gladii had bronze hilts and pommels, but some could have wooden furniture. The grips were most often bone, but sometimes wood. Bone is the most common.

Greek swords could have an all bronze grip, pommel, and hilt, or be completely iron, or have a leather grip.

Any more questions just let me know! ;)

At least you've heard of them. :)

Anyway...

Worked on Greek Swords.

Note: the UV map is probably very off. GMAX does this weird thing with pixelizing high-res textures, so I have to crop this picture and roughly scale the UV to fit the new map to get a screenshot.

I keep forgetting to post here.

Did falcata.

Screenshot of what I've done. (Falcata, greek and, celtic swords)

Too lazy to put it on model because I'll have to mess with earlier-mentioned pixelization of GMAX.

So... do you guys think those three are good enough or do they need more work?

There is quite a few of those falcata swords... could you do some with some ornimentation or metal work on the sword.

Probably more examples here:

Also, looking at some sword textures in some other games... I wonder if they shading should be dark at the rib and get lighter to the edges vs. light at the rib and darker at the edges.

Shading: Well, that's how it was in your version. :saruman: Alright. I'll change it.

Ornamentation: Ok.

References: You know, that would have been so helpful had I had them earlier. ;)

Just a little warning beforehand. I might not get so much time to do these this week. Being the procrastinator I am, I kind of am in a rush to get this one school project done....

Hmm... the Task Manager reminder thing doens't seem to work.

Whatever.

Okay, I've managed to squeeze some time in to get work on these.

fscreen.jpg

@Paal: Okay, what does a kopi look like? I can easily replace one of the existing falcatas with another texture. At the moment each of the bronze and iron falcatas has a duplicate anyway.

Oh. and something that's not too great... I noticed that GIMP's support for psd isn't perfect. While I have been able to open psds with no problem, it seems GIMP won't save psds right. I tried reopening one of my old psds with GIMP and it seems that it can't even read the layer modes it saves.

They are all set to "Normal".

And when I opened it with Quicktime, (Apparently psd can be opened by it.) I get a garbled mess of purple and green lines.

Anyway, I'll continue to upload the psd file in case Photoshop reads them fine, but just don't be surprised if they happen to be corrupted.
