What are the a, b and e suffixes of units?

In the simulation/templates of the 0ad svn we can find some troops with suffixes _a, _b and _e (advanced, basic and elite). For example "rome_infantry_swordsman_a", "rome_infantry_swordsman_b" and "rome_infantry_swordsman_e".

As it currently stands, looking at the .xml files it appears they are all the same. Is this true?

Are the categories a, b and e planned for future releases or do they exist now in ALPHA 23? How will this work?

Cheers!

I don't know the exact rules (if there are any), but they do get a lot stronger. I haven't played in a while, but I remember them having more attack power, more armor and more hit points.

I think ranged units become more accurate too, but I'm not 100% sure.

In the simulation/data/technologies-folder, there are files called "advanced_unit_bonus.json" and "elite_unit_bonus.json". Those are the "upgrades" the advanced and elite units get, respectively.

There are plans to allow for a more easily identifiable system though.
