Feedback from a non-hardcore gamer

I will start by saying I think this game plays to an under served portion of the market. My two most favorite games are RON and EE. I feel this game has similar elements with an updated twist. Since both of those products were successful and there hasn't been any similar/updates in a long time, this game could be huge. Banished is the closest thing recently but it lacks war and easily becomes boring after a while (its nice but...).

Personally I have been searching for this game (or a game like it) for many years and I'm glad to see it in development. I will be watching patiently to see it completed.

I've only played a few hours but find it very entertaining. Still getting used to controls and how to advance but I like what I see. For what its worth (maybe nothing), here is some thoughts:

1) Not sure I get military units being used as gathers/builders. Not sure why citizens cant build walls or other military buildings. It feels unnatural at best and at worst cumbersome as my military spends time constructing when i want them prepared to defend/standing guard. Found myself having a group of military on build duty and the rest on military duty.

2) Camera control - Overall its good. Would like to be able to rotate camera by holding down the mouse wheel though. Tilt camera would be nice add as well (didn't notice if it already exists, my apologizes if it does).

3) Keeping track of everyone - since this is alpha I assume improvements in this area will come eventually. A separate idle button for military and citizen would be nice. Assigning citizens to certain tasks via control panel would be great.

Since I'm really interested in seeing the final product I will continue to play and provide feedback about features. I feel my viewpoint is from a broader audience of those of us who play occasionally if there is something interesting to play. My biggest fear is that future game developers focus on mobile games like Clash of Clans (ugh) and this area of gaming fades away. Please, please keep going!

Welcome MJR:)

What I'd like to comment on is mostly your first suggestion. Eventually you'll get used to it, it's not that hard to manage, just different. However I'm also kind of against it, since I believe it reduces a lot the effects of tactics like harassing the enemy economy. Normal workers doing all the labor would also allow for bigger variety on the strengths and pricing for early units (like weak/cheap/fast trained Persian spearmen, strong/expensive/slower trained hoplites, without favoring Persian economy too much). Some exceptions like roman troops building army camps could remain in the game.

I can't see it removed though, being one of the game's unique and core features.

One idea is to keep it for certain civilizations/factions for which the feature makes more sense (such as the Athenians), but scrapping it for the rest.

While it seems iconic for Athens and other Greek city-states, the majority of ancient soldiers would be part-time levies. So I'm not sure on this, perhaps it could work as semi-historical flavor and civ differentiation.

Use Shift+Mousewheel to rotate the camera, you can find more hotkeys in the in-game manual or here. Mouse tilt may or may not work, we need more people testing it: #2848

In fact most soldiers were just civilians that took up arms in times of war so the CitizenSoldiers seem historically legit. To tackle the impossibility of harassing the Eco of the enemy is was suggested to let them drop their goods and fetch their weapon at the nearest military building but that suggestion has been dismissed because it would add too much micro.

Agreed. I meant that semi-historical would be to use them for some factions only. My desire would be removing them for the two gameplay reasons I mentioned and have the differentiation only through champions being the "professionals", but if not (which seems to be the case) let's keep them as they are.

Archers (and ranged infantry) can be garrisoned onto walls in the developer version (and A17).

Ok - I see now that they can be garrisoned inside but eventually will they be able to stand on the walls and fire down on enemy?

Also - I built a stone wall and the enemy was able to shoot through it and kill my army on the other side.

When you garrison them "in" the wall they will appear ontop of it, and can fire down on the enemy. They do however not move around on the walls, that would be a lot more difficult to implement, so it's not very likely that we will see that in 0 A.D.

It will be released in a few days. You could also get the SVN version (a little more complex to install - also this should be windows only, I'm unaware of how to get equivalents for other systems).

I'm not very techy so I'll wait for the release. Thanks
