niektb
Interesting to see that the building set has resemblances but also differences with the Frankish and the Norse buildings.
Le Druide Gaulois
I thought the same thing, they are very similar with the Norse, architectually speaking. Actually they seem like a middle ground between both civs.
Le Druide Gaulois
Here follows more references. Saxons seemed to have used both wood and timber frame equally in their constructions, and despite the examples here, roofs were almost always made of straw. I don't know if we should choose between wood x timber-frame or if we could mess with them both just like the good old Saxons did.]]
Stan`
I don't know for what reasons we shouldn't have both. =)I don't know if the saxons had many boats, but I was thinking maybe we could only have the wooden structure on the last image for the docks. It would give a village look.
Le Druide Gaulois
About the dock, I actually thought the same thing. Just the pier looks accurate, it woudn't make much sense for a non naval civ to have elaborate docks.

Le Druide Gaulois
Thanks . The roof looks Japanese, but I came to know that a lot of Germanic bronze and iron age longhouses look like this. They have somewhat rounded and very smooth edges. Stan`
Do you know how big it should be compaired to the other buildings ?
Le Druide Gaulois
It would be roughly like the Norse longhouse, only wider. Here's a concept for the farmstead/corral:

wowgetoffyourcellphone
Would be good basis for Part II Germanics or no?
Le Druide Gaulois
I don't think so. By the time of 0AD part II, the Germanic buildings would look much more primitive, basically roofs. Like this:
Stan`
Should I use the norse struct texture ?
niektb
I think that for this we'd better of with the Celt structure (maybe modified a little?) (for the sake of diversity)
Stan`
Yeah but what should we use for roof, and wood ?
niektb
I would say a yellowish hay roof and a brown wood type (like this http://www.earlybritishkingdoms.com/kids/images/saxon_house.gif)
Stan`
All references show a brown roof tho.
Le Druide Gaulois
I say we experiment and try both wood (modifyed from the Norse, maybe) and timber frame, since they used both. From what I have seen, the Saxons seemed less architectually skilled than the Norse, so Saxon structures should look "lamer" and a little more primitive. Some constructions used boards, other simple logs. The pictures of West Stow on the first post show this diversity really well.
Le Druide Gaulois
I have an idea that may sound wierd, but think about that: we model those 4 houses and we create 2 textures. Then we make a set of each texture, what would give us a total of 8 different houses, thus more varitety and accuracy. By the way, I meant the CC and barracks to be timber frame. Le Druide Gaulois
I really like them so far, just a couple of notes: the roofs should advance a little more from the ends of the homes, and there's is a very definite line separating the upper and the lower sides of the houses. Also, that little board I've drawn above the doors would be for player color. By the way, putting a little storage thingy behind one of them would be a good idea. I'm being really confusing here, I hope the picture bellow illustrates it better: Edited September 26, 2015 by Le Druide Gaulois
