I only changed the ethnically native Egyptian units though. The Greek, Arab, Celtic, etc. units have not been changed. I admit though, if I were aiming for greater realism (and to differentiate my re-skinned Egyptians better from the Kushite units), I'd give them a reddish mahogany-brown color like you see in most ancient Egyptian art. But that would require a lot of time-consuming texture-editing, so instead I went for simple texture swaps in the .xml files.
-
I'm using the Kushite textures and meshes for this re-skin simply out of convenience. They are supposed to represent indigenous Northeast Africans like the original Egyptians. Anyway, here's a screenshot of my next step in the process. I finally got the Egyptian pikemen to look the way I want them to.
-
I'm working on a simple re-skin mod that will give the Ptolemaic faction's native Egyptian units (such as the female citizen and the Egyptian pikeman) darker skin tones through mesh-swapping. As of this morning, I've managed to get the female citizen's re-skin working, but not the re-skin for the pikemen, and I need to change the unit icons as well. UPDATE 8/22/22: Remade this whole mod from scratch. The .zip file is attached to the OP. Results are viewable in the screenshot below: egyptian_reskin.zip

The Kingdom of Kush: A proper introduction [Illustrated]
Tyrannosaurus replied to Sundiata's topic in Official tasks
Nice art and research you've shared! I totally support introducing the kingdom of Kush into 0 AD. I'd even go so far as to say it should be added to the base game. BTW I am the artist of a couple of the pictures you shared on the last page, and I'm thankful for the attention. Here are a handful of more recent images of Kushites I've produced:- 1.040 replies

I see, but let me look over it and make some revisions. Afterward, you have my permission to use it.

OK, would you like me to write a .doc profile if someone else hasn't done it already?

I notice that a lot of the "concept art" for the Egyptian units uses reconstructions by modern-day artists. Why not look at how the real ancient Egyptians depicted their own soldiers during the time period in question? Attached are authentic Egyptian images of their own soldiers. In contrast to some of the reconstructions posted earlier, these tend not to wear much protective armor; most of them simply have loincloths and cowhide shields. Also note their dark cocoa-brown skin colors.

Ancient Military Rosters
Tyrannosaurus replied to Tyrannosaurus's topic in Introductions & Off-Topic Discussion
Mostly Old to New Kingdom, but the elephant was actually inspired by the possible Meroitic Nubian use of them. -
http://jabrosky.deviantart.com/gallery/32690743 This is my latest artistic project. I'll be drawing military units from a number of ancient civilization such as Egypt, Persia, and China. As of now I have the Egyptians covered and will be doing the Persians next. The Egyptians As a general rule, Egyptian soldiers are cheap and swift, as they have little body armor to burden them, and they maintain morale better under hot conditions. However, this same lack of armor makes them vulnerable to any enemies they can't outrun or outmaneuver. Peasant: The cheapest and most disposable of the Egyptian military roster, levied peasantry are best used when you don't have the resources or time to train more experienced and disciplined warriors. They can also augment the defense of a city. Spearman: The main Egyptian defensive infantry, spearmen work especially well against mounted units such as cavalry and war elephants. They can also be used to block narrow passageways Thermopylae-style. Axeman: Fleeter-footed and more offensive infantry than the Spearman, the Axeman is specialized at taking out other infantry at close quarters. Their agility is their main asset, as they are less well protected than their Spearman counterparts. Archer: The Egyptians would often begin their battles by having their archers shower arrows upon the enemy to soften their ranks before engaging them with hand-to-hand units. These also come in handy when garrisoned in defensive structures and aboard ships. Slinger: Though they have inferior firing range to archers and javelineers, Slingers can "reload" faster and are also cheaper. Javelineer: These fleet-footed spear-throwers are to the Egyptians what Skirmishers were to Age of Empires II; they work especially well against other ranged units. Chariot Archer: The closest thing the Egyptians have to cavalry, Chariot Archers move faster than men on horseback, but are less maneuverable. However, their combination of speed and range makes them ideal light cavalry for raiding from a distance. African Elephant: Imported from the savannas south of Nubia, the African Elephant is great for trampling and demoralizing large numbers of enemy soldiers. Elephants can also be used as living battering rams. The Egyptians' African Elephants are larger and stronger than the Indian Elephants used by the Persians, but are more expensive.

@ asmartgoat I'm glad that you're interested in making the mod I proposed, but unfortunately I have no actual modding skills. The most I could do is draw some concept art, and I'm not even good at that.

Well, looking at the official Design Docs for the other civs, ethnic names seem to be in, so I chose an ethnic name for my Egyptian priest.

Age Of Empires Online
Tyrannosaurus replied to tinoesroho's topic in Introductions & Off-Topic Discussion
I for one think the cartoony graphics look rather cute. They wouldn't work for a serious Age sequel, but since this appears to be an MMO rather than a whole game, I don't mind. -
Would "Wat Junpawu" (which is actual ancient Egyptian for "priest") work?

EDIT: Design document moved to OP.

I've finished my Design Document for the Egyptians. It's written on a Word document. Where can I post it?
-
Matter of fact, I'm working on a design document right now. Thanks for the link!

I know the Egyptians were no longer a major power during the time frame of 0 A.D., but since they are perhaps my favorite ancient civilization, I would still like to see them in the game. EDIT: Now in Design Document format! Some concept art for one of the Egyptian units

The Nubians are a Nilo-Saharan people living alongside the Nile river in northern Sudan. Their civilization has been heavily influenced by that of the Egyptians. The Nubians have skilled archers and powerful cavalry, but weak infantry, and their stone buildings are durable but expensive. Nubian Units Nile Spearman: Lightly armored infantry armed with a spear and cowhide shield. Most effective against cavalry. Medjay Archer: Archer with superior range and accuracy to other archers, making him an excellent sniper. Chariot Spearman: Swift cavalry that is most effective against archers. Chariot Archer: Swift, ranged cavalry. War Elephant: "Cavalry" that is powerful against most units and buildings. Stronger but more expensive than the Carthaginian War Elephant.
-
A playable civilization I would like to see in the game is Nubia. They would specialize in archers and cavalry (there is even some evidence that the Nubians used war elephants) but have relatively weak infantry and armor. They could also have strong defensive structures.

I'm a 20-year-old college student who decided to join this community because I like to play RTS games, especially those set in ancient times. Sometimes I come up with ideas for RTSes, but I don't have any programming or graphic design skills as of yet. Nonetheless, I look forward to posting here and sharing some of my ideas!
