we dont really have fire hydrants like the americans. we have underground things with a plastic lid on them.
the few places they do exist are normaly around important buildings etc and are tucked away. they are big and red and look nothing like american ones

hmm I know your not into windows, but doesnt winXP have some kind of share viewing thing supposedly for support? you might be able to set it up as a network link. not sure but just an idea. although if I remember correctly you're not all that keen on windows so it's probably not your first choice.
if you were to physicaly remove the screen section, and alter it so that you must plug in the input, well thats an idea although I would imainge it would void any form of warenty etc and unless you know what your doing, damage the computer in general

yeah it works on knoppic Ive posted here on knoppix once or twice before.
EDIT: I decided on fedora core, downloading now. Im 140mbs through it. this is going to be a long download.
