  1. hmmm ... digging up my old l33t dos knowledge ...

by simply copying the files to another 5.25" floppy, but the computer doesn't recognize it as a system bootable disk.

you need to actually make a bootable disk - just copying the files does NOT transfer the boot-record of the disk

you can either (after booting up with your original disk) type in (with the new-boot-disk-to-be in the drive)

format a: /s (this forces DOS to make a boot disk)

    or alternatively you can use

sys a: (this forces DOS to transfer the system files and the boot-record)

if you have a dual-disk-drive (heh) system ... you can have your original disk in drive a: and the empty disk in drive b:

    then you just use

    format b: /s

    or

sys b: (if it is already formatted - but doesnt have the boot record)

hope this works for you ... and :) for geeking around with those old PC's :P

  2. Yes - TLA as well as 0 A.D. will be extremely mod-friendly.

From our limited point of view as it is now (we're still in conceptual stage) i'm 100% sure that you will be able to edit existing Civs. if or how you will be able to add in additional content remains to be seen. it's currently too early to tell.

  3. you are more than welcome! to me the Sil and UT just barely scratch the surface :axeman:

what really is remarkable is Tolkien's effort he put into his work when he created his sequel to 'The Hobbit'. a lot of his labours are depicted in HoME vol.6 as he struggles along the narrative ... and i think he rewrote the part between Hobbiton and Rivendell about 4 times (major revisions).

there are some obscurities to be found ... e.g. the character of Strider was originally to be a 'lost' Hobbit of the Took family called 'Trotter' ;)

and he was supposed to wear wooden shoes :torch: only later the idea of using the old 'Kings of Men'-race was used.

  4. I do doubt however, if we should give the 'Histories' such a high status of information sources. If I understood correctly, they are mostly notes or unfinished drafts.

i fear that is quite an understatement, Anco. the HoME volumes are key-components and very valuable sources when it comes to the more specialised issues that surround TLA.

just to give you a hint ... Christopher Tolkien heavily used those 'notes and unfinished drafts' when he compiled the Silmarillion (although quite a number of editorial errors slipped into it that way - which were glossed over by CT). and the 'Unfinished Tales' are just a few select parts and essays that make up the bulk of the HoME volumes ...

only if you read the HoME's - you will truly appreciate Tolkien's creative genius :torch:

    sorry - that was a bit :axeman: ... forgive a zealous HoME-y ;)

  5. again - happy bday adam!

you know - turning 19 is quite an accomplishment ... i remember it fondly - that was the year i graduated from my specialist tech college, spent one month in california and even had the priviledge to join the army for 8 months (compulsory service here in .at) ... but most fondly i do remember the parties ... oh my :) ... no need to go into much detail :P

  6. hey caedus!

well thanks for the offer ... i'm currently too swamped with work - and when i get some free time i do work for the project - so basically yeah - you *can* start threads in here ... i'd highly appreciate it if you would step up and get the Reading Group going again.

although i'm currently unable to join in again - maybe in a few weeks time - when things don't look so grim in my schedule i would participate again ... but yes ... feel free to continue!

    :)

  7. haha ... wow you guys turned off-topic (y)

ok ... let's make a compromise ... new topic - "Which country would you want to go to - depending on it's local beer" (:)

if that were the case i'd pick Bavaria - mainly due to their excellent Wheat (or white) Beer ... in all flavours - from crystal clear to natural to dark ... yummy!

if it were just for the country itself - my current pick would be Thailand! me and my wife are suffering from withdrawal since our holiday there in Summer 2003! (we've been to Koh Samui - in case you were wondering)

  8. i've been reading the official RotS script and this includes many scenes that were cut from the movie. regretably those scenes would have fleshed out many issues i do have with the movie.

scenes like the 'birth of the rebellion' and lots of Palpatine's political maneuvering (including his move to take direct control of the Jedi Council and his installing of Regional Gouverners ... say hello to Gov. Tarkin (y) ) and much of Anakin's turmoil and his fear of loosing Padme - which ultimately makes him to accept and choose the Dark Side

it's a pity those scenes ended on the cutting room floor ;)

i wish Lucas would make an 'Extended Version' like PJ did for the LotR movies - but that will probably never happen :P

but you may read that script for yourself ... it atleast improves the film :)

  9. so ... i've seen RotS last night ... and overall liked the film

i do have some minor (or major) gripes though ... especially regarding the editing in the last quarter of the movie. is it just me or does this film suffer from being rushed at the end? (similiar to RotK - Theatrical version) ... Lucas really hastens us from scene to scene ... and somehow manages to nullify the effect of many scenes ... e.g. Vader's 'Nooooo'-moment ... or the mention of Qui-gon Jinn by Yoda (which IMO is a profound plot-point) ... this just gets mentioned and then cut to the next scene. no time for the audience to digest this info.

i fear Lucas again tapped into the old trap (that is common in nowaday's films) - it's again action & effects over story and plot-development.

IMO he could have completely scrapped the Gen. Grievous parts (although brilliantly made and fun to watch - but it didn't help the story at all) and invested more time in much needed character interaction.

he should have used more time to show Anakin's slow seduction by Palpatine. Anakin's fall as depicted in the film is IMHO handled much too quickly ... and his knee-fall before Palpatine comes too rushed. but thats just me (y)

all in all it's a worthy conclusion of the Prequel Trilogy and definitely the best of the 3 prequels - but it cannot touch the 'old' Trilogy :)

  10. i'm going to see Ep.3 tomorrow evening - because thats the first timeslot our local multiplex shows the film in it's original english version ... and i simply despise (although probably well made) the german dubbed version. it's a pity that original language versions have such low appeal here in austria :)

i'm going to see this with a bunch of my boyhood friends (we grew up together on Star Wars back in the early eighties) - so this is gonna be fun.

and indeed - "The circle is now complete!"

and btw ... if anyone owns the game Battlefield 1942 ... there's that great mod called Galactic Conquest ... so if anyone feels the urge to give it a try (mind you - it's a 800+ mb download) just tell me ... it's really great fun playing this online! (if i ever learn to fly those X-Wings (y))

  11. 2nd try - after i've got a 404 error when posting my original text :\

summa summarum - i highly doubt that we will see something like this anytime soon (or even later) because the rights to all of Prof. Tolkien's works (excluding LotR and Hobbit) still belong to the Tolkien Estate (spearheaded by Christopher Tolkien) and i fear they are adamant about NOT selling the rights of the other texts (in this case Silmarillion, Unfinished Tales and some HoME volumes) to any movie company.
