  1. I see. What about situations where one book that is higher 'canon' (say, LotR), implies something, but doesn't actually say it, but another book elsewhere that is lower on the priority list (say, Morgoth's Ring) explicitly says something that contradicts the implications in the book on the higher priority list?

what makes you say that HoME vol.10 is lower priority than LotR (y)

no - seriously - my above example of Ereinion Gil-galad being the son of Orodreth is a good example for something like this. Here HoME vol.12 clearly takes precedence over the Silmarillion. With certain details we will make sure that - if - those details are covered elsewhere more extensively that this will influence our decisions then. it all boils down to many specific case-by-case decisions.

but this is not the end of the road. you as a member of the community will be

Also, what do you do where there is nowhere anything that says something clearly? For example, it is plain and clear in every version of the Sil that Tinúviel/Lúthien has some powers that go beyond what her physical form would indicate, and she uses these powers to do some pretty impressive things, but nowhere does it say clearly what those powers are.

this will be one of the hardest stories to actually translate into our Story Campaign format. we haven't started on designing this one - so i cannot say much *yet*.

regarding Lúthien's special abilities i can only say - her mother was of the Maia and her father was among the first of the Eldar to behold the Light of the Trees in Valinor. Lúthien *is* a special case and i don't think we can clearly shelf her personae and abilities to be like other Eldar of her time ...

i know this is not a satisfying answer - but as long as we haven't tackled this Narn, i cannot give any more indepth info

Cool! Do we have a release date yet?

we are planning to release this a short time after 0 A.D. gets released - so cross your fingers ... currently it's too early to tell ... so we'd better say 'when it's done' :)

    cheers

  2. that is true - as a rule of thumb - the 'newer' the material the more 'canon' we consider it. hope this does answer your question. although 'canon' is a term one cannot easily apply here (y)

e.g. we consider Gil-galad to be the son of Orodreth and not the son of Fingon - just as an example.

  3. @Beren

thanks for your concerns - but rest assured that we will take utmost care to stay as close to the books as possible.

but i'll have to say one thing up front - we are not striving to present a 'canonical' version - we will present 'our' version that we think best interprets the Professor's writings.

additionally to that we will empower the community to create their own interpretations with the exact same tools and editors that we use for creating Nern Ennorath - we will just provide the basics. TLA is and will be extremely mod-friendly - so there will be ample room for the community to explore the many possible interpretations.

  4. Just a quick heads up - due to the forum upgrade to v2.1 our news-feed from the news forum was broken. we are currently redesigning the whole forum-feed scripts - so this may take a while still.

in the meantime i hope you can forgive this current situation. and stay tuned - there's something brewing ...

    :)

  5. The only way that i could picture this is - when a player starts recruiting Militia - that a certain percentage (depending on the civilisation itself) of the new units are female. having females in regular army units is still not an option i fear. but we will include as many as possible female characters as distinctive 'hero'-units as the texts will allow us ...

  6. this is definitely not based on something that the Professor created - i merely think this is a map for some sort of Fan-fiction project :)

the only material Tolkien wrote about the Fourth Age is (as Rinion correctly mentioned) called 'The New Shadow' and is to be found in HoME vol XII.

  7. just a quick heads-up from the devs: yes, we are definite planning on having underground maps in the game ... at certain points in the game you'll be able to switch between surface and underground ... but i can't divulge any more details as of now ... cheers!

  8. that dark figure climbing over the wall is 100% Mr. Strider - because he even says himself that he overheard the Hobbits taking leave from Old Bombadil and talking about that Mr. Underhill business and so he decided to follow them ...

a funny thing is - in one of the early drafts of this chapter (for reference see HoME vol VI) the figure of Strider is actually called 'Trotter' and is supposed to be a Hobbit (one of the so called 'Lost Tooks') and is wearing wooden shoes (!) which he uses to hide his scarred and burnt feet (a dark deed by the Enemy) ...

in later revisions Tolkien decided to include the whole backstory of Elrond and the other Half-Elvens and suddenly Trotter turned out to be a man of the noble race of Westernessë :)

  9. the Oathbreakers would per definition belong to a race of men akin to the Pre-Haladin that simply stayed and settled in the vicinity of the White Mountains - they didn't (like their distant ancestors) make the journey to Beleriand in the First Age.

so we could use them as a Minor Civ in the Second Age with some heavy-scripting to make their appearance as unique as possible.

and no - there hasn't been a decision yet to not include them, but since our current activities mainly concentrate on the First Age, i guess their time hasn't yet come. :D

  10. @Beren

we are and will pursue the purist's point of view in the project. of course due to the limitations of a game you need to make some compromises (which is regretable) and you have to do some educated guesswork concerning areas where the Professor isn't just clear enough or areas which are simply missing.

but we are striving *very* hard to remain true to the spirit of the books in such areas - which always leads to extensive discussions in the internal team forums.

but we will *not* under no circumstance start to invent stuff that isn't mentioned in the books, just because it would make Arda more complete (which is an IMO questionable approach). Tolkien inherited us a very rich tapestry - a world that is consistent in itself. and that's what we are trying to depict in TLA.

  11. not only that - but your actions concerning your neighbours will have a large impact on all Diplomatic Relations.

e.g. if you break an alliance - your former allies will view you with some contempt and suspicion. (meaning there will be a considerable penalty for doing this)

if you then go ahead and become openly hostile towards another civ (that can be either a neutral civ or a former-ally) your former allies could take that action as a justification to declare war on you ... so basically 'backstabbing' isn't to be taken lightly (unless you have the military muscle to back up your ambitions)

  12. very true Beren :D

we in TLA are considering Tolkien's revision of his old material that happened post-publication of LotR to be the 'canonical' source for TLA (as featured in HoME vol. X to XII) since back then he made a huge effort on rewriting his 'old' mythologies he assembled back in the pre-Hobbit days.

  13. @Rinion

the civ that you are controlling will have a set of pre-defined diplomatic relations with all the other civs on the map. we are basing these relations on the information gleaned from the books. what you do after the game has started is strictly your own affair - so as an example if you decide your Noldor Civ should get hostile towards let's say the Galadhrim - well it is possible to do that with many diplomatic actions (breaking an alliance, canceling trade agreements, threatening the other civ ...) and direct actions of your units (attacking their caravans, moving your army into the territory of the other civ ...)

hope this answers your question :D

  14. engine wise we are closely knitted to 0 A.D. ... in their part 1 the notorious 'units on walls' concept was ditched - but i've heard it's a fixed ingredient of 0 A.D. part deux :D

so by the time TLA is in the works (programming wise) i'm sure we'll have the opportunity to have units standing on the fortifications (atleast it's a stated design feature - as of now)
