  1. we haven't really started developing the editor - save for TLA's game engine itself. but from our current plan anyone who uses the editor can mix and match different units from different timespans into a custom scenario ... i mean if it makes sense to you to have a hero-duel between say Aragorn II and Sauron in Werewolf-form ... so be it :D

  2. oh my ... well thanks for your creative output ... but i fear you are all off the mark. i fear you'll have to wait a little while longer until we release our 'new and improved' population concept :D

all i can say now - the level of detail you propose in here goes contrary to our more *cough* global view *ahem*

  3. @Beren

ad 1) you still think way too much in the confined AoX-quarters :D *hint*hint*

ad 2) if you happen to conquer an enemy settlement you will be prompted with some options like Raze, Occupy or even Enslave for the Forces of Darkness amongst others ...

and no - you won't be able to assimilate a 'foreign' tech-tree ... so it's not a situation as in Starcraft/Warcraft where you can suddenly build your enemies units and buildings.

  4. thank you for your thoughts - although your ideas and suggestions are more or less off the mark.

what i currently can unveil: you *will* have the opportunity to draw some sort of milita from your population - which is assembled rather quickly - but hopelessly inadequate against regular troops.

but i fear you won't really see much villager-interactivity in TLA at all ... (blame it on our globalized approach if you will) :D

  5. whee - seems like Beren wants to take a stab at Game Design, eh? :D

i can assure you that not every battle is a total annihilation scenario. our battles in TLA will have many different objectives that the player needs to fulfill in order to win - depending on the situation you will be required to e.g. delay the advancing enemy and in the same time retreat as many as possible of your troops to safety - or you'll need to execute an ambush and kill or route as many as let's say 50% of the enemy's army.

to put a long story short - TLA will feature a smart way of having different battle objectives which must be fulfilled to actually win these battles.

more details will be announced at a later date ...

about enslaving - only the Forces of Darkness and their like-aligned Minor Civs will have the ability to enslave other civilisations. we are currently toying (again) with the concept - so i cannot make a definitive statement yet. but you can be sure that good-aligned civs (e.g. like Noldor or Edain) will *not* become slavers - even if they manage to conquer an enemy stronghold - they would most likely free the slaves and integrate them into their own population or send them off home.

  6. @Beren

again - we will *not* include something like a resent-o-meter in the game. all political happenings will be scripted into the game and become active once the 'historically' correct moment arrives. if a civ is to be divided (i.e. Gondor's Kin-strife) we will introduce a separate (new) faction that will split off from the original civ and receive a part of it's provinces. with introducing a new faction (that is in it's origins still part of the original civ) we can have a totally different diplomatic stance towards it's former allies while maintaining the consistancy of the civilisation in itself.

    @Aztec_Brave

    heh ;):D

  7. well yes and no ... you see it's about the whole civilisation as opposed to single 'Houses'

when you choose a civ you will be able to pick a specific House that is of that civ.

e.g. taking a quick glance at the First Age of the Sun:

Noldor -> House of Fingolfin / Finarfin / Fëanor ...

    Dwarves -> Longbeards / Broadbeams ...

Edain -> House of Bëor / Hador ...

each individual faction within a civ will get it's unique symbol - but they are still of the same race and thus share the same characteristics.

although some stats (e.g. your diplomatic standing with others) might be different (e.g. Sons of Fëanor have a worse standing with Thingol's Sindar than say the Sons of Finarfin ...)

  8. we will of course take into the account the population growth/stagnation of the individual civs in the different Ages of the Sun.

population growth will depend on many factors (amount of settlements, the civilisation itself -> e.g. Elven population in the Third Age will be much harder to increase than say in the First Age)

as it has been hinted at - we are now looking at Arda at a much more global perspective - not necessarily limited to let's say a single map like in AoK *hint*hint*

  9. Would those events 'play' in a random scenario? And can they be scripted in the game editor?

if by 'random scenario' you mean an Age-spanning campaign - then yes  (a little patience is still needed on your side - we will reveal our latest developements soon)

and yes - in the game editor you will be able to create specific events that 'fire' on user-defined conditions

Does everything have to be strictly Tolkien, though?

errm - yes! :) but the player will have enough freedom to decide himself on what transpires in Arda ...

and again ... those scripted events will have noticeable effects on more than one civilisation - not only the one that the player controls ...

  10. interesting question there Beren :D

as you correctly mentioned, Tolkien doesn't really include things like dissent and revolutions in his tales. he only mentions political upheavals like your examples of the Kin-strife in Gondor and Celegorm's and Curufin's grasp for power in Nargothrond (amidst other examples).

we are currently not planning on having something like a dissent-o-meter in the game - but we will portray such acts of political turbulence with in-game events - which will have a profound influence on the gameplay

for example take the Kin-strife in Gondor. when that event 'fires' the player will get (if playing Gondor) a popup where he can decide which side he supports. accordingly to that decision the Realm of Gondor will be influenced (e.g. some provinces will fall to one side while other provinces stay loyal to the 'rightful' line). if Gondor is controlled by the AI - then this will be a scripted event (as it will be with any other event that we will depict in TLA)

but i'm afraid we cannot include stuff like revolutions because - frankly there's no basis for them in the books ... and to us the books are the solid source on which we design and build TLA

  11. i've just finished the chapter ... quite sad if you ask me ... but not totally unexpected ... it seems JKR put in hints of Dumbledore's demise right from the start of HBP ... (getting old, slower reflexes and his burnt hand) ...

what question now remains ... is Snape now still acting on his Order of the Phoenix role - or is he really a double-crossing bast%$d? ... we'll only find out in book 7 :D

  12. woah ... easy guys ... i think you are still way to preoccupied with AoX-style games ...

*whispers* we are currently moving towards a more global and macro-ish approach ... *ahem* ... but you didn't hear that from me :D

(same holds true for that other thread in here ... that one w/ the tribal villagers ...)

  13. for future reference guys & gals ... please use the spoiler-tags [ SPOILER ] and [/ SPOILER ] (without the spaces of course) when posting plot-details ...

i've edited two posts above in this fashion - just to protect others who are currently reading the book.

  14. A question from me: so will units level only through upgrades a player buys for them?

no - i think you've misunderstood - the solely source of experience points is prevailing in battles. the mentioned upgrades will just boost some attributes of the units ...

  15. yes - we will have a 4-level unit experience system ... each level-increase gives some noticeable boni and attributes to the unit ...

Could units be given experience using the editor?

yes :D but only in player-generated random maps/scenarios ... you will not be able to alter your unit-stats in a Campaign ...

  16. well - for one ... we are currently revamping some key parts of our game concept ... so please bear this in mind ...

the old concept is/was that we have 3 distinct Leaders for each civilisation - each of them with unique attributes (e.g. boosts economy/battle efficiency and so on)

our new concept encompasses a more broader view on Arda - to be more precise we're currently looking at whole Ages of the Sun. so it is possible (although nothing has been nailed down so far) that we WILL have Leader Succession - especially for the mortal races.

also - if somehow you manage to 'loose' your leader - you will not be able to get them back ... Mandos will be quite unforgiving ...

and please note - there's a distinct difference between Civ Leaders and individual Heroes :D

just a short heads up from the depths of the GD Dept. :D

    cheers

    -bernd
