  1. Well, I must say when it comes to the living room part of the house my technology knowledge really falls (still above the average person I think, but at least there are a lot more experts than me)

But, well, a friend of mine got himself a 50" Projection TV. He hooked it up and it seems blurry to me (he ignores it, after spending 1500 $ or + it's hard to accept something is wrong, I know the feeling). But anyway, I have a chance to get a really good deal on a 42" Projection TV ($ 200-300) but the fact is: What are the advantages, why does it seem blurry for my friend.

Is there anyone with any experience so that I know what to check when I get a chance to see if this TV is what I want? I mean, I know Plasma TVs are much better than anything, but that comes with a price. Now I have a feeling there's a huge difference between HD and Projection, and just want to know what should I do or check up on?

  2. After watching 6 trailers, I got to say this has nothing on Half Life 2...

Don't get me wrong, this is a great game but in moving video it does not compare to HL2 (imo). The physics are limited, they have models reactions and stuff but not to the degree HL2 takes it.

But I do like the concept of this game, and will most likely buy it. Though the trailers seemed quite empty, perhaps that will add to the freakiness and nervousness...

  3. Well, the reason instant kills don't exist is because HP is there to represent the unit fighting. After all you don't take turns to hit each other in battle, you block/dodge and try to live. So once we can calculate the blocking and dodging and overall fighting as well as where on the body it hits the unit (cuts the shoulder or throat) then instant kill will get closer to being implemented. That's my thoughts, I just don't think it can be well implemented yet... at least not by us.

  4. Yep, those do look good. I'd say they are shooting for different things:

HL2 is going for physics and interactivity while this seems to be going for stunning pictures and open-ended? But really, I wouldn't rule out (graphically) Doom 3 out. Anyway, thanks for alerting me to this, I had never heard of it (or I heard, never saw anything to get me interested)

  5. Won't, just as War of the Ring didn't affect us. And yes, I've heard of it, looks really good, shame they can only base their game on the movie, not the books.

P.S. did you know that Tolkien Enterprises has refused to sell rights to The Silmarillion to any movie/game company... wonder what they have got planned.

  6. 1D is a concept of the human mind, doesn't exist.

2D is a concept of the human mind, doesn't actually exist.

3D is a concept of the human mind, doesn't actually exist but applies to the real world.

4D we have defined yet, but we'll define it and it'll be a concept of the human mind.

By this I mean, 1D is just a single line, no width, no height, just length. does not exist. 2D is flat, I don't mean .0000000000000001 cm, I mean the width does no exist thus 2d does not exist. 3D means it has width, height and length, but again, this is just a concept. It applies to real life (or so we believe at present) but I believe 2000 years ago the world was not in 3d, it still was the same but 3D cannot be applied to it because it's concept did not exist... I dunno, 3d in my opinion is just an idea, an idea that gets across well in real life, it's simulated in 3D programs but through a 2D interface. and 2D is only a concept that can be simulated on paper. Just my personal thoughts of dimensions, I know: I'm kinda crazy and I have no idea why I didn't captilize my sentenses... *loses his mind*

  7. Invent your own computer lingo and see if people play along for the sake of not looking ignorant. (Use "CD-RAM", "Calibration Factor", or "Zapping" things. Also make up files like "MEM.EXE" or "EXEC.SYS".

It works... :P Had almost my whole school 'learning' things from me until someone who knew the same or more about computers challenge me, I wasn't able to keep a straight face.

    I'll think of some.

  8. Oops, you posted before me...

Oh, the only other creature I wanted to express in height are orcs. They should be 4-5 ft (1,20-1,50)tall, since in Moria they describe one of the orc captains as nearly man-high. This means that they are not as tall as men (but I still think they should be taller that dwarves).

  9. Didn't Tolkien give the size of hobbits? I mean, Bullroarer (and later Pippin and Merry) were the only ones to get close to 4ft. Other hobbits were 3ft I think...

They are (or were) a little people, about half our height, and smaller than the bearded dwarves.

    From the Hobbit.

For they are a little people, smaller than Dwarves: less stout and stocky, that is, even when they are not actually much shorter.  Their height is variable, ranging between two and four feet of our measure.  They seldom now reach three feet; but they have dwindled, they say, and in ancient  days they were taller. According to the Red Book, Bandobras Took (Bullroarer), son of

Isengrim the Second, was four foot five and able to ride a horse. He was

surpassed in all Hobbit records only by two famous characters of

curious matter is dealt with in this book.

    From Fellowship of the Ring.

So, as far as we can tell a good hobbit size is between 2-4 feet (60-1,20 m).

Bullroarer reached 4.5 ft (1,40 m), Merry & Pippin surpassed him.

They are slightly smaller than dwarves, but not much shorter.

    They are half our height.

So let's supposed they are 3 ft (90 m) (which is between 2 (60 m) and 4(1,20 m)), then dwarves are slightly taller than that so 4.5ft (1,40 m) should be their average height. Men then are put at 6ft (1,80 m), ad elves... ?

Ok, I don't know conversions to meters anymore *ashamed (Brazil background)*

  10. I believe in time travel, because I know people from the middle ages did not believe in cars. Just as they did not believe man could land on the moon, unless by some odd theory of magic maybe. Maybe these theories of quantum physics and forbiden will be seen as us trying to explain a logical fact will nonsense. They maybe not. I think human beings have a very difficult time seeing that the present is (in essence) the past. Our so called marvellous ideas of today, are pathetic and simple ideas of the past.

I'm no disreagarding quantum physics, it's a great idea of time travel... you should read timeline. But I myself think that if someone travelled back in time he would find his experience far from what he expected, if you wanted to kill yourself, you wouldn't. Say that you know you got married in a nice chapel down the street, well you'll never make it there. Maybe some truck runs you over, or you trip and shoot yourself. But whatever, you never will make it there because you were'nt there when you got married. So basically I'm saying that if you go back in time, you are back in time and time cannot be changed, so you were there in the first place. No act you make will change it, will only complete it as it happened. Thus all these mysteries of today, might be someone from the future.

If I find the bones of a tall human skeleton, not really human, more like an alien, it might just be a human from million years from now that doesn't look human to my eyes. And no matter if these humans know of these sightings, somethin unexpected will make them want to come back. Thus causing the sightings.

There, I've looked at the fossils of a dinosaur, but not knowing of their existence, foolishly called the dragons and assumed they breathed fire :P

  11. My idea has been taken: Start a game developer company, publisher and developer all-in-one so there's no pushing to meet deadlines. Full Alienware (or custom if employee requests) rigs for desks. A 'research' center for studying other games. And it would be open 24/7 for employees to come in and do work whenver they feel like it. There would be daily meetings where things were decided (if someone can't make it his say in the subject is lost) and each employee would be in responsible for a certain amount of hours at work and attending at least 3 meetings a week. For the rest it'd be open ended. Also, I would try not publicize my games until 3-4 months before release, in order to not promise things my developers couldn't deliver.

Now, I have a question: They say that making a game can cost multi-million dollar budget, right? Well, where does it go. Employees only? I guess, 2-3 years of 50-100 grand a year for employeess, maybe that's where it all goes.
