Ouch!!! Great Burn!!! LOL

Anyway, even though I don't plan on buying a computer any time soon... I thought of this contest, and since I woulnd't mind looking at comps (from stats to looks) i decided to do it...
Anyway, this is the contest... build me a computer... list all the items, the prices and link to images if possible and then I will look at all the entries (bold and underline entries so that they're more noticeble) and I'll basically judge which looks the best, seems the most powerful and for the best price and choose a winner.
This can actually turn out to be better, if we could get more than just me as a judge (two more people, hopefully more knowledgeable of computers than me) to judge as well we could make this into the Computer Desk's answer to the Community Writting Contest...
What do you guys think? Any range counts, offer me a 200 dollar computer if you want, but I don't think I'll buy that piece of junk
Almost forgot, as of now (me as only judge and contest just a fun thing) the prizes are:
1st Place - Rep Up, 1000 Currency
2nd Place - 1000 Currency
3rd Place - 500 Currency
And I'll look at entries again in August, specific date to be announced later (I'll give you plenty of time, like a month, before I give a final date)

The engine Prometheus (you can learn more about it over at 0 A.D.) is built from the ground up as a modding platform. Indeed 0 A.D. and TLA are in practice very very big mods to the same engine. Art (models, textures, etc..) can all be plugged into the game easily (AFAIK). So to answer your question, I don't know (because playing Halo on legendary to me is considered easy, but to others it might be harder). But the games will be moddable, and we assume more moddable than most games out there. RTS that is...
To find out more, and correct some of what i said, visit and ask about it at the 0 A.D. forums.

Like ES?
Yes, Arda mirrors our world's way of thinking and stories... while here we have a positive hopeful way of looking at outcomes, in Arda Tolkien shows us a more negative (and who knows, maybe more accurate) perspective of an outcome...
Great post Mith!!

Wow, you can tell if that's 64bit, or did you read it somewhere?
Funny story about realism in games, I was driving past this lake and I looked at the water and the sun shining on it and thought: crappy water effects... LOL, it's funny. Also, many times I see sections of forests that do not look natural (maybe too many tree types, or too perfectly aligned) and if it was in a game I would say bad level design!!!
-
Code, haven't you heard? We're gonna be giving CD keys to all copies of the game... manually j/k, we definently support you burning our game (just don't sell it of course)

That's nothing, you should see it in action (video)!!! Gamespy should have it (where I got mine).
But you have to realize that this is not this next generation graphics (Doom 3, Half-Life 2 generation). The Half-Life 2 engine was at that state about 2-3 years ago... so expect that to hit comps in the form of a game about 2-3 years from now I'm guessing, well it's hard to tell their state of development from a video of course. But no game footage was shown in the entire video, only technology demos (like the Half-Life 2 tech demos shown in 2001 E3).
But yes, it does look amazing!!! And the lighting is unbelievebable in motion!!

second question: you'll download it so no disk, just hard drive.

That section to the top left is throwing me off, is this a real-time strategy or a board game strategy sort?

To me, they mirror Rohirrim

Well, Geocities sucks. Angelfire did not allow me to just simply post images and link to them, they wanted me to develop an actual site and shut me down when I didn't do that.
So I come here asking for your suggestions to image hosts...

If anyone finds screenshots/videos or a demo please link!
their site doesn't have screenshots yet!

Supposidly she won't be involved with POP2... apparantly by cheating death, Fate spawned a supernatural assassin that hunts the Prince down. So POP2 looks like it will be about him avoiding and eventually killing it, i guess... Anyway, it's more dark and action oriented.

Never heard of it, but I can tell the graphics are quite a bit cartoonish and imo suck - but some people try to convince me that that's not all that matters

Heh, got sort of stuck on a part where there's a huge room with boxes, a rocket launcher guy (human) at the far end and a bunch of shock troopers... VERY DIFFICULT. Then I bought Max Payne 2 and have been distracted... But I'm thinking if I continue to die in that level, I'll have to ditch the savepoints and use the save cheat in order to get farther after every enemy But after a few more tries!
Also started replaying Halo on legendary (hardest) and found it a bit more difficult than I remembered (not nearly as hard as FarCry mind you) but I think it's the lack of auto-aim (playing it on PC this time). Max Payne only allowed me to play on easiest, you gotta beat that before you can raise the difficulty... not complaining.

Wow, this is definently an improvement, very good job... Yes, DA did an awesome job with Duke (all versions).
And I'm sorry I closed him in with walls in Tribes of War scenario, if I hadn't he would have probably helped my score as well Oh well.

No, I don't think so... but I do think that while we were searching for our decision (tolkien based or pure tolkien) or maybe right after it we (adam) discovered Ancanar and a short consideration to make the game based on it... not a serious consideration I don't think. Can't remember anything about an actual campaign based on their story.

Hey, I sent in one of those Questions for the Q&A thing and actually got a reponse (they didn't put it on the website, but one can't have it all)
A N C A N A R . C O MJune 17th, 2004
RESPONSE TO QUESTION SENT: April 10, 2004
Q: First let me congratulate you on what you've done (with the trailer
footage at least)! I myself am involved with a Tolkien inspired pet
project, though not as big as yours But let's get to the question:
In the beginning the budget was practically $20,000 right? Well, since
you've received some finacial support from producer Barry Opper I imagine,
I'm not asking for specific numbers but is it still $40,000 or less,
$50,000-$500,000 or do you think it might even reach a million?
Also, what and how are special effects being handled? Who is working on
them? Are there heavy CGI elements, other than just backgrounds or image
shading. Are there per say creatures or specific events that required CGI,
or cool physical effects that you'd be willing to share?
And I won't ask when the release date will be, rather will you make another
trailer?
A: Thanks for the kind words, Shane. Sounds like you've got something pretty
cool in the works, I wish you the absolute best of luck on it. As for it not
being "as big as ours," don't be too sure! We're essentially three people
working out of one apartment - can't get much smaller than that.
We support we've received from Barry is not financial - he's become a
producer, opening his contacts for us and working on the budget. He has
opened many doors, and put us in communication with companies/people we
never could ourselves. The budget is still being worked on, so I can't give
our numbers quite yet.
The special effects are done entirely on our Apple G4s, with programs such
as After Effects, Commotion, Combustion, Cinema 4D, Lightwave... We learned
how to do that kind of stuff ourselves so that we could get this far. Will
they be turned over to an actual FX house later on? Who knows.
There are no creatures, so to speak, in Ancanar - it's a fantasy, but closer
to a historical/drama fantasy like Gladiator. For us, it's a character drama
that just happens to take place in a fictional pre-history Europe.
We will probably release another trailer soon, depending on when we have
time to work on it.
Thanks for the questions, and please let us know how your project is coming!
-Sam Balcomb, writer/director
just to clear the record, I said TLA wasn't as big or important on purpose, it's not necesserily my true opinion but just wanted to act the friendliest as possible (no bragging, though I don't think their project being bigger than TLA is wrong)
-
what can i say, it's on my 'to-own' list... my only qualm is that it's looking like I will not be able to play as barbarians.
-
Never played BF, but this might be worth a try... it does look good but not quite as good as HL2 or Stalker (but since it plans to be such massive online battles, I don't blame them). Stalker though has some nice shaders and texs but their character art kinda sucks...
I'm talking only graphics of course.
-
sweet deal!

Need to at least check if I had such crap, I would like know free software that hunts them down and kills them
Or methods to doing it myself, for those that don't show up in the Add/Remove Program list.

there should definitely be a JRR Tolkien University in England
I'll to that!

Gaming btw... but really this isn't a real-life situation (as in, I won't be buying anything) but I'm more interested in gaming than anything else so it's easier to judge. As a furture reference, prices are really appreciated
Lorian, I can track down the prices of those, but if I have many entries without prices it can become a bother tracking them down
