  1. Citizen soldiers could also work as militia or conscripts. This sounds interesting, good luck! I may be getting ahead of myself here, but for the future expansions, I think that the Ottomans and maybe the USA should be added. During this period, the Ottomans were fighting against the Austrians and Russians mainly for influence in the Balkans. At the beginning of the 18th century, the Empire had stagnated but towards the end of the century, Selim III had begun reforming the military to make it more modern and "European".
  2. The Persians absolutely used elephants, including at the Battle of Gaugamela. The Sassanids had a title "Commander of the Indians" because the elephant units were from India. That is a bit after the time period of this mod though. And although the average Greek soldier was not neccessarily better armoured than his Persian counterpart, sometimes gameplay takes precedent over total historical accuracy.
  3. I have some information and unit ideas for the Byzantines and Ayyubid period Egypt if you want it.
  4. I'd be happy to help with research if you need it... India at this period of time was a patchwork of dozens of states, so they may need to be renamed... Also, the Ottomans were only around for the second era of your mod (1299-1923). I don't know if this is a problem for what you have planned, but I just thought I'd point it out...
  5. I think that deleting the Scandinavians would be a better idea, as the Vikings are more well known, important and would probably be quite popular. Not to mention they would be cool to play as.
  6. It was just sort of a whim I had, so I don't really expect this to go that far, but I was thinking on focusing on people that don't get a lot of attention in games. So, no I don'k think it will focus on any geographical area particularily.
  7. Some military ideas for the Maori: -The Maori are interesting for using no ranged weapons until the musket arrived with European settlers. -Very good at using defencive fortifications. Some unit ideas: Tao: Basic Maori warrior, armed with spear. Taiaha: Maori infantry armed with a long staff. Maripi: Highly feared warrior armed with a short club with a toothed edge. Pu: Musket armed Maori warrior. Waka: Huge canoe full of warriors. Buildings: Whare-tu-taua: Trains soldiers.
  8. I was browsing through the internet and came across an article on Wikipedia about the Guanches, the precolonial population of the Canary Islands. To my surprise, it had a very detailed section about the warfare of this little known people. Inspired by DimitriRUS saying he wanted to put less known civilizations into his mod, I came up with the "Forgotten" Peoples mod. (Forgotten meaning not as well known as they could be) So far, I want to include the Guanches and the Maoris, both of which I have found plenty of information on. I think three civs would be more than enough, so if any one has any ideas for a third, that would be great. I was thinking something Sub-Saharan African maybe? I dunno... Anyways, this was kind of just a bizarre flash of creativity and inspiration that I had.
  9. The Vikings were the people who lived in Scandinavia though. They weren't a separate civilization then that of Scandinavia, they were the civilization of Scandinavia. Also, they werent nomadic. Sure they would leave their homes for a while and go raiding, maybe even settle down in some recently conquered land (the Rus come to mind) but that doesn't make them nomads. By the time period you are discussing they were sedentary.
  10. Interesting, A couple of things though: 1) 20 civilizations seems like a lot for this sort of game and would be extremely difficult to design, create and balance. 2) You have Scandinavia and the Vikings. Could you explain this? 3) Which Egypt are you talking about here? Fatimids, Ayyubids, Mamluks? 4) Bulgaria and Serbia seem like they would be very hard to design (not that that is necessarily a bad thing, its just that they are fairly obscure) 5) The Vikings weren't really nomadic. 6) A glaring omission to me is the Holy Roman Empire, one of the most important states of the Middle Ages. Any reason why it was not included? Anyways, thats my imput. Good luck!
  11. I really like the Byzantine Empire, so any mod focusing on them would be excellent. A mod focusing on the Muslim conquests perhaps... Also, Mongols are always good!
  12. Wasn't the ancient Japanese military horse based, or am I imagining that?
  13. An eastern mod? For 0 AD? Sounds interesting...
  14. Is 0 AD in first place! Awesome! Oh wait, is it in alphabetical order? Anyways, I voted for you guys
  15. I voted! Seriously, this game deserves it. Good luck.
  16. 1) What are "territories" in the game? 2) How does the age up (phase?) system work?
  17. Here are a few basic ideas: Spain Rodelero: Basic infantry used by Cortes. Lightly armoured. Uses sword and buckler. Tercio: Heavy infantry. Good armour, armed with a long pike. Miquelet: Light gun armed infantry. Jinete: Fast light cavalry that throws javelins. Adelantado: Heavy cavalry armed with sword. Conquistador: Armoured cavalry armed with musket. French Gendarme: Very heavy cavalry armed with a lance. Chasseurs a Pied: Light infantry, renowned for sharpshooting and skirmishing skills. Chasseurs a Cheval: Light cavalry armed with carbines. Coutilier: Heavy infantry armed with voulge. Mousquetaire: Ranged infantry armed with a musket. Coureur des Bois: Weak infantry armed with musket. Good at hunting, woodcutting, etc. Pics coming
  18. Yeah, I did some research about the Ottomans, and although I didn't know about that before, I still don't think they should be included. About the Indians: Aren't the Iberians in 0 AD sort of like that? They are better in trees and at guerilla warfare, or did I just imagine that? Of course this wouldn't work for all Indian cultures, but it definately would work for some.
  19. Umm... Just feel the need to point out that there were no wild horses in the Americas, and they deffinently did have metal. And they did invent the wheel, but used it only in childrens toys. But that is another story... Umm, a city in the middle of a huge lake, how is that not great strategic positioning? Anyways, I'm just saying the Natives weren't nearly as weak or primitive as most people seem to think. Obviously their technology wasn't on par with Europeans, but they very misunderstood. To move on, shall we start sort of planning this mod? For civilizations, the main ones that I can think of are Spanish, French, British and Portugese.
  20. I don't understand what you are trying to say. I guess what I mean by all this is that it's quite unfair to call the Indians naked men with clubs and spears, when they had complex societies, massive cities, powerful governments and advanced philosophy and mathematics. And they obviously wore clothes.
  21. The Aztecs are hardly a good example. When Cortes arrived, they believed him to be their god Quetzalcoatl, and when the King Moctezuma invited them into his city, they took him hostage. Later, the Aztec nobles led a rebellion and drove the Spanish out of Tenochtitlan. The Spanish lost more than 600 of their men. They then found refuge with their allies, the Tlaxcala. The Aztecs then attempted to drive the Spanish out once and for all but they were defeated. He then told the Tlaxcala that is they defeated the Aztecs, they could have Tenochtitlan, which was a lie. They then advanced and took over all the Aztec cities except Tenochtitlan. When they attacked though, the city was going through a smallpox epidemic, which had killed hundreds of thousands. One third of the resisdents died in under 6 months. The Spanish also had ships armed with cannons firing at the city and thousands of Tlaxcalan warriors. The last Aztec king finally surrendered. The idea that a few Spanish soldiers walked in and slaughtered the Aztecs is simply untrue and ignorant. The Indians quickly learned to use European technology. For example, Plains Indians, like the Sioux and the Comanche used horses for hunting and warfare as good as or better than the Europeans. I think you are right about the cannons, though. To the extent of my knowledge, not many Indian civilizations used cannon. The Conquistadors are the exception. Most colonists in North America in the beginning were either killed by the Indians or the environement and had to return to Europe.
  22. I like the first timeline better, personally. The way I felt about AoE3 was that it was almost like it should be two games, because technology progressed so rapidly during that period. Also, I didn't like how they included the Ottomans. They didn't have any colonies in the Americas. Since Tathar hasn't been active for like a year, I think we should sort of overhaul this thing.
  23. Exactly. An army of highly trained, elite European troops could probably defeat most Indians very easily, however the soldiers who were fighting them weren't elite troops, but colonists and militia for the most part. Also, leaving Native Americans out of a Colonial mod would be like leaving Rome out of 0 AD. For a timeline, I don't know really but starting in 1492 is good. PS: Maybe that could be the name of the mod, 1492? Just a thought. I like how it alludes to 0 AD.
  24. I would love to help! I know how to texture, and I know a lot about the Native Americans especially, but also about the general history of this period. PS: Belisarius, I would point out how wrong you are about the Indians, but Abadu already did it. I think that to leave them out of this mod would be silly, and I don't really like the way they did it in AoE3, but it's better than nothing. PPS: Why would a Iroquois warrior, for example, or a Cree warrior armed with a musket be any less effective than a British or French soldier armed with the same weapon?
