  1. Based on Gandalf's from the movies?

I do not believe so. The movie's take on Glamdring had a curved guard engraved with runes, and the forte of the blade was curved too.

But Glamdring was one of my favorite designs from the movie ;)

  2. Matteo - I only meant that the Lonely Mountain Forge attempts to create its arms armor based both on how it's actually done (ie individually crafted and forged with old-style equipment) and descriptions of Tolkien's.

If it doesn't "look good" it's because of the smith's skill, not the process or intentions.

  3. Hmm, I have to disagree with you there. Tolkien had a very keen sense of history, including arms and armor, perhaps not as technical as conceptual, but it was still there. Tolkien had a relatively simplistic view, but if you read about some things in HoME II, The Fall of Gondolin, you will read about some outlandish pieces of armor, and weapons of war, such as mechanical (or animated) dragons that could "breathe" streams of fire ala flamethrower, and carried within them troops of orcs like an armored personnel carrier.

I have to question why you say that the movies did a FAR better job of making the various tropps and warriors look developed.

You say this from the point of view of real history, but as far as Tolkien's mythology is concerned, there is no other history. The elves, for instance, did not encounter Roman legions. Middle-earth doesn't really[/] have a truth beyond what's in Tolkien's work. Anything beyond his work that wasn't written by him isn't really Middle-earth. So when you say "far better job" I have to question how that is possible, considering that only Tolkien had absolute knowledge of his world.

It's true that Tolkien had to import ideas about weapons and what not from our historical world, but within Middle-earth they would have had a development and history of their own, akin, but not the same to ours.

How unique and realistic would all the troops look if they all wore chain mail?

It would be far more realistic, as this is the technology that existed in Middle-earth. It's far more unrealistic, for example, to create an entire army of elves that wield curved swords with no historic precedence in the books themselves. In fact, Tolkien makes explicit reference to all Noldor, except for one lord, Egalmoth, wielding straight-swords only. So there is no historical reference in the history of Arda, and also no real historical reference in our world for their weapons.

What the movies did a good job of was giving the "appearance" or "impression" of underlying history, without actually bothering to create that history or explain it to their largely uneducated audience. That's pretty much what movies do, however, and we all must do to some degree.

I think what we'll produce with TLA is a much more cohesive, historically accurate picture of Middle-earth's arms and armor, without resorting to whimsy and vaguely historical symbolism.

Also, you might be interested in this. Nothing gets more "real" than what this man does with the arms and armor of Middle-earth:

  4. Hmm random stats - that's an interesting idea that we'll have to discuss within the team. I suppose the downside to that is creating micromanagement, because you wouldn't want to put the bad units in the front of the formation.

Also, standardized training is supposed to give these units standardized skills.

The emphasis in TLA is with groups of men and the formation, the army, not the individual units. That'd be more like a roleplaying game.

Tolkien did not bother to write about everyday soldiers and regular infantry, he wrote only at length about heroes and characters. Regular soldiers were usually described en masse.

We will, however, have randomly generated names for units, not to give each unit a personality or something like that, but because together, they will have the effect of giving an entire civilization personality through language.

I remember playing the game Myth by Bungie software way back when it first came out and how characteristic each race became because of the types of names that each could have.

Each unit was basically of a different race and each unit had a different set of names. Dwarves all had names like Nori, Ori, Dori, etc Some really exotic civilizations had their own made up languages, etc.

It was really immersive, which is a quality I'd like TLA to have.

  5. There's a limit to many units like Balrogs and dragons.

Other units will simply be too costly to produce en masse.

However, all of this is all very speculative until we actually balance the game.

But I assure you that we don't want a player making armies of elf lords for many reasons, not the least among them because it runs counter to Tolkien's writing.

  6. Rober posted his first message containing progress on Nandorin on our Staff forums on January 23rd, 2004, which implies he had been researching it for some time earlier. So it's been more than a year in development :P

    Soon we will release it...

  7. He's a "media favorite" in the states. He's a republican but the news media loves to portray him as a "rebel" and a "maverick". In fact they use those terms a lot when describing him. He is a veteran of the Vietnam War and was imprisioned in a Vietnamese camp for a lengthy period of time. I believe he's on the Foreign Relations committee? I'm not sure on that. Either that or Intelligence, or Armed Forces. Maybe it's the last one.

The truth his it seems he's often outspoken on issues when he disagrees with Bush, or maybe a lot of people are, but the news media only chooses to air what McCain says. It's hard to tell.

When he agrees with Bush, for example, in the case of Donald Rumsfeld keeping his position as Secretary of Defense, he was very much with Bush, and so the news media didn't air that too much. :P

In short, I don't know much about the real John McCain, because the media have made him into a sort of "stereotyped" maverick character. Whenever the President does something the news media doesn't like, they'll get a clip of John McCain disagreeing too, so that they can say, look, even republicans are against Bush, the entire country must be against Bush then.

I don't know if I could trust him. As much as he "differs" from Republicans once in a while, when things get tough for that party, he's as loyal as any GOP member.

  8. Correct. That was Elrond's doing, though not through the help of Vilya. Vilya was a ring of air - Nenya was the Ring of Water.

I guess the best way to explain it would be to say that the valley of Bruinen was somewhat "enchanted" - similar to Celtic River Spirits in that mythology and Persian river spirits in that mythology, as you see in Herodotus' Histories.

Elrond called upon the river itself for aid. One must also remember that rivers in Arda are the domain of Ossë and thus do have some level of "enchantment".

Then Gandalf put his own "special touch" on the raging torrent by giving it the shape of horses :P

  9. I also "resisted" IE for a while.

I only started using Firefox because my IE developed some strange habits that were quite annoying.

In the end I found that I liked firefox because of the extensions it has:

I have a web dev extension that lets me see the CSS of pages really easily, and also various structural components.

I have adblock which I can use so that I never have to deal with an unwanted banner ad ever again.

I have chatzilla which lets me communicate on IRC.

I have a free, built-in FTP extension (fireftp) since WS_FTP is no longer freeware.

I've got a news reader built in.

And a utility with which to check my bandwidth.

I don't even use tabbed browsing.

  10. Just something funny/disturbing I found.

    http://www.eagames.com/official/lordofther...rth/us/home.jsp

On the navigation bar of EA Games' site there is a list of "Franchises"!

    Among them are:

    Battle for Middle-earth

    The Third Age

    The Return of the King

    The Two Towers

So now "The Third Age" has become a franchise of EA! That's as if a company could own all of the rights to make games that take place within the Age of Enlightenment. Ludicrous.

I can't stand to see this:

    The Third Age

It's like seeing "The Fall of the Roman Empire ".

And the game promises: "Deep gameplay that expands all three films. Travel to familiar and unfamiliar places such as the Mines of Moria, Helm’s Deep, Pelennor Fields, Minas Tirith, and a host of unexpected locations like the White Mountains Plains."

I think that's kind of ridiculous, expanding on the films when the films themselves are based on something that is far more vast.

What they have essentially done is made The Lord of the Rings into a franchise exactly the same way Wizards of the Coast has made "Forgotten Realms" into a franchise, so they can make every imaginable product and novelty using this this franchise as a selling point. And that's what they're doing - turning Tolkien's work into Dungeons and Dragons, turning Tolkien's raw work into nice links of commercial sausage.

I mean, I just saw a massive troll with bongo drums hanging from its neck cast a fireball at Aragorn, and Gimli raise a pile of magical stone from the ground. There's a video of a hooded ranger casting a tumultuous lightning spell ala Manwë, and Grima Wormtongue summoning a massive ball of blue energy in the Golden Hall.

Watch this video on the development of BfME:

One of the animators makes repeated reference to ents as "Treants", which is not a simple mistake, but Treants are actually well-known monsters of the Dungeons and Dragons universe.

That doesn't offend anyone but me?

  11. Mikael, I think I like the information boxes better with a background of #FFFFFF as opposed to #F7F6F0, since the latter is also the background color. I like the information box to stand out:

So let's edit the wizard minutely to change this. I imagine I'll have to reupload it to the /tla directory then.

I'll edit the existing articles to change this, but anyone that wants to help, it is appreciated :P
