  1. Edited top post to include my second draft of my piece. I have generally reduced my use of effects. For the tin whistle, I have reduced the compression and other effects. I think the sound comes through better now. I have rerecorded the harpsichord an octave up, and without the minor 2nd (which in my way of viewing the piece is more of a 6th, as I am thinking in E Dorian, rather than B minor). I think the higher strings have more of a zither/hammered dulcimer kind of sound. Equipment wise use mainly AKG C414s for recording, and Genelec 8030As for monitoring, so any problems in the sound probably don't come from my equipment. I have to say that I am struggling with your concept of what constitutes "believable" and "appropriate" though. For me it seems that epic orchestras of VSTs are neither. As you say, we have very little idea what the music of the time was like, so we can't really know what is appropriate. The current score for the game reminds me more of 19th and early 20th century music if I am honest. I would rather hear music that is openly contemporary while reminiscent of ancient music, than music which makes me think of some totally unrelated time period in relatively recent history. All music made today is necessarily contemporary, and for me, attempts to pretend otherwise just don't quite work. What I am hearing at the moment is a score that is "period based", but not based in the right period. I think that some orchestral epicness may be required in places, especially for battle music, but at the moment I must say I am unconvinced by the orchestral sections. I don't claim to be able to do better, as I have never done orchestral writing, as it isn't my domain. Basically I find the musical references to be too modern, yet not contemporary enough at the same time. I don't mean to offend, but these are my thoughts on the music situation in this game. Others may disagree, but I am just giving my feedback, as music is the one field involved in this game that I actually practice (other than playing games, of course). In any case, music is such a subjective area, that no-one can ever be "right" about it anyway. Well, apart from Bach, his music is always right, but he is no longer with us unfortunately. One person's noise is another person's sonic bliss. I know that we have very different points of view musically, and I am not seeking to open a massive debate, I am just putting my own opinion out there for all to see, as part of my process of providing feedback for this excellent game. Regards, Sebastian.
  2. If I understand correctly (not very clued up on all the technical terms), you are making it so the game will be easier to compile for OS X, so we may be seeing an official OS X binary soon? Does this include the Atlas editor? Keep up the good work!
  3. I can now go to the page in the link, but the actual file is still forbidden for me.
  4. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_WYUW1mF1Ec http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ncleiT-xKGg BEST music.
  5. Thanks for your reply. It's interesting you should say that, as what you are hearing is a harpsichord and a tin whistle, both played 100% live! The only bits that aren't actual recordings are the percussion (apart form the low tom) and the lowest sound in the drone. I can try taking the delay off, but it is basically one of the major components of the track. I guess my inspiration for the electronic aspect comes from the AoK music, in my opinion probably the best game music of all time, because it is contemporary, but also incorporating orchestral and medieval sound worlds. It's a shame you don't like the lowered 2nd , I was rather pleased with that myself! I don't really see what else is out with the harmony, it is all based on E Dorian, which is very Celtic. I guess a pretty major rework is in order to meet your requirements. I'll see what I can do.
  6. The Tuba and other large Brass Trumpets http://www.rugs-n-re...Roman-Tuba.html Roman brass instrument used in warfare for military communication. The main point of this instrument seems to have been loudness. The website above mentions that similar large trumpets were used in many ancient civilisations (Greek Salpinx, for example). It is interesting to note that a similar instrument has also been found for the Celts (see documentary below). This type of tuba is not a direct ancestor of our modern tuba, which if anything is closer to the Cornu in shape. The Cornu http://www.rugs-n-re...oman-Cornu.html A ceremonial and military brass instrument used by the Romans. The Chartar (or just Tar) http://www.guyguitar...iefHistory.html This is picture is of a modern instrument, I believe, but I guess it is similar to the ancient ones. This "Brief History of the Guitar" claims the Persian Chartar to be the ancestor of the Guitar. Although it doesn't give a date, it claims that the Greek word Kithara could be derived from this instrument, making it very ancient. ------------------------------------------------------ These are some of the most specific instruments I have found. Also many types of flute, pipes, harp and brass instrument were used as well as percussion including drums, bells and clappers. Also of interest is this video featuring some reconstructions of instruments found in Ireland: Does anyone else have information on music from the 0 A. D. time period? I intend to compose some more music to submit for this game, so I would appreciate any historical information on the music of ancient times. Sebastian.
  7. The Aulos http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aulos A reed instrument generally played as a pair. Used by the Greeks and Romans. The sound is reminiscent of the bagpipes http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PCNnzzeurcw The Hydraulis http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hydraulis An early organ which uses water to provide the air pressure. Known to be played by the Greeks and Romans
  8. The Carnyx http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carnyx An imposing Celtic brass instrument used in warfare.
  9. This isn't really Off-Topic, but if figured maybe it isn't sufficiently "On-Topic" for the General Discussion and ideas forum. I'm afraid I have to multi-post as only 2 media files are allowed per post. Anyway, I've been trying to find out about ancient music, but it seems that surprisingly little is known about the music of the people represented in 0 A.D. The only idea we have of the actual music itself is from a few bits of music written by the ancient Greeks. From the video description: It would seem that the Greeks greatly influenced many other cultures with their music. It would seem that Roman music was mostly based on Greek music, although there is no surviving notation for Roman music. It would appear that the Celts and Iberians most likely exchanged musical knowledge and instruments with the Romans (who themselves were influenced by Greek music). I haven't been able to to find much for the Carthaginians and Persians. Concerning instruments I have found out a bit more. ----------------- The Lyre/ Kithara http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lyre It would seem that this instrument is common to many cultures of the ancient world. The Kithara is similar to the Lyre, but was considered a more professional instrument. These instruments are derived from the harp, but are much smaller and therefore portable. Certain articles I read claim that the Lyre was brought to the Celts by the Romans, but the above Wikipedia page says it developed independently in both cultures. I find this one to have a particularly haunting archaic sound:
  10. This worked pretty well on Cossacks, as well as needing gold to maintain mercenaries and certain ships, if I remember rightly.
  11. That's a shame. I guess I'm just going to have to set up Boot Camp pretty soon.. EDIT: Does this game (and the editor) currently work better on Ubuntu or Windows?
  12. Just wondering, is there any chance someone may be able to make an OS X binary of the Atlas scenario editor?
  13. If you read Sebovzeoueb with a French accent, what does it sound like?

  15. Hello all, I have put together a piece of music for 0 A. D. I think it would be suitable for Celtic peacetime http://soundcloud.co...rst-draft-0-a-d Let me know what you think. As specified in the title it is a first draft, so I am open to suggestions to improve it, and it could probably do with a better mix eventually. EDIT: Here is my second version:
  16. I'm using mtkaz's OS X Alpha 5 binary. I don't really get how SVN works, but I assume it involves compiling (I'm a noob at that kind of stuff). My problem isn't the quantity of wood on the maps, it's the gathering speed, but with techs I imagine it will be possible to gather wood faster. Maybe in the later phases (that's what your calling "Ages" right?) we could have bigger houses or something, like a celtic longhouse for example.
  17. I like the long build time for stuff such as fortresses and town centres. It means you have to have a large group of workers to build something fast. Also, concerning the whole citizen-soldier thing, I think it is cool (reminds me of the Norse in AoM), but I don't see why it is the soldiers that can build more types of building than the villagers. Villagers seem a bit pointless when you can just build infantry instead. Shouldn't they be better at building and gathering than the citizen-soldiers? I think it makes a lot of sense for troops to be able to build a temporary fort (like the Romans), or some kind of camp, but I think building of larger structures such as stone fortresses should be assigned to dedicated builders.
  18. I've found all of the factions to be pretty wood heavy. It's because pretty much all of the buildings (including farms) need wood, and most of the units too. I am aware that the game is far from finished, but I thought it may be useful to post my observations on this feedback forum, to help with the balancing when it occurs. I never thought about the costs of stuff in terms of trees before. That makes a lot of sense. If buildings are made more expensive though, I think there need to be appropriate increases in wood harvesting. I currently reckon that about half of my gatherers are gathering wood, a quarter on food, and the other quarter between metal and stone, with an increase in the number assigned to metal once I start making strong units. And I still never seem to have enough wood. Also I think houses are a bit expensive for the amount of population they provide. Especially with some units taking 2 or 3 population, meaning that you only get 2 or 3 unit increase with the houses that provide 5 population. While this is realistic, it requires building lots of houses, which in turn requires lots of wood. I'm thinking in terms of trying to raise armies of 500 or so units. The Romans could have Insulae (block of flats) to house more population, but I'm not sure about the other factions.
  19. For now at least, couldn't we just have a button to open or close the gate? Having enemy units stroll through the open gate because your army is just on the other side can be pretty annoying, and renders the gates pointless.
