  1. I see your point, and sorta agree. Sorta as in, there's one major difference between smoking and the other examples you mentioned. Smoking is in no way necessary, and it doesn't really have anything good come out of it. If you compare that to cars which, while polluting, get you to places, industries which produce whatever it is, etc.

Public transport can't go everywhere (or rather, it can, but it'd be extremely impractical), so while there should be more of an incentive to use public transport cars are needed (that isn't to say they have to be petroldriven, just that cars are "necessary").

I've tried several times before to find a good reason for smoking, and I haven't been able to. With that in mind, and considering that it is a health risk, I feel it should be banned. If there was a good reason for smoking, I might have a different opinion, but as it is now, that's how and why I feel as I do :wine:

  2. I don't see why you're trying to make this an all or nothing debate... Just because I'm for banning smoking doesn't mean I'm for banning everything that's a health risk.

So anyway, my point is that there has to be a way to lessen smoking in a gradual way and then ban it when the rate of smokers is tiny. Of course, you'd have to help those that couldn't stop smoking and all of that, perhaps allow them to continue smoking, and have it as a prescription drug for them specifically or something.

I'm not really trying to suggest how or when we should ban smoking, just that in a long (read: loooooooong) perspective it's a good thing and something to strive for. Banning smoking at this time when the usage is as widespread as it is will however, as you say Matteo, just lead to putting that money in the hands of criminals, which isn't exactly good either.

    Yiuel:

I agree with you on the reasons of why people start smoking. We've had tons of discussions in school about why people start smoking, and I think we've always and pretty much unaminously come to the same conclusion. Peer pressure and wanting to be daring. Basically, issues that affect young people mostly. I am not trying to tell anyone what we should do to stop people smoking though, just that it/something should be done (uh, that sounded arrogant, but I haven't really gone any deeper in this discussion than that, and I think that's all that I've really said :wine:).

  3. It's available for download but MS was fixing something for some outlook program or something, and that it'd be put on windows update after that. I've also heard it's supossed to be 100MB instead of 250 when they put it there... I haven't got it yet myself, but except for this thread, I've only heard positive things about SP2...

  4. Klaas:

I don't have a problem with smokers. Most of my friends smoke or take snuff, or both... I still think smoking is something that is only negative over a long perspective though. Granted, when you've started it's hard to stop smoking, and it feels good to take a cigarette, but if you've never smoked at all, all the better imo. I'm not sugessting that everyone should have to quit smoking right now, right here, as that would create a chaos. It's bad enough when one person is trying to quit, I wouldn't want to imagine the consequences of millions of smokers trying to quit :wine: I'm just saying that in the long perspective I would want smoking to become outlawed.

    Erik:

He hit the nerve. Smoking costs a bunch, but has a lot harder time ruining people's lives then alchohol and other drugs.

Why does it have a harder time ruining people's lives? Because they can get cigrattes almost everywhere. If it was as easy to get marijuana my very unprofessional guess would be that it'd create even less problems...

  5. How about we compare smoking to, uh, marijuana? Let's see, marijuana is not physically addicting (I'd have to look up something about it to give you a source, but for the moment I don't have the time) and kills less braincells than alcohol. Now why is smoking not completely banned and marijuana is? I want to see both completely banned personally, so I just see this as a step on the way.

And yes, I'm aware that the reason smoking isn't banned has a lot to do with history and culture. I'm just saying that it's worse than a lot of drugs that are banned, yet people are complaining about bans about it...

  6. How about budget? It's kinda hard giving suggestions without a pricelimit... Not that I know much about cases though. Still, Antec PSU are good, queit and stable. Usually the PSUs in cases suck I hear, so get a seperate one, unless it's a PSU you know of and think is good :wine:

  7. I think it was rather based on both the PIII and P4 but with a lot of inspiration from a chip that was never released (with an integrated graphics controller IIRC). There's a great article on it over at anandtech though if anyone's interested. Delivery should be happening on Tuesday give or take a day or two :wine:

  8. That's the only way, yes. I have however heard that you don't lose your data when formatting from FAT32 to NTFS. I'm really doubting the level of truth in that though, and I haven't dared test it myself, but if you want to, feel free to try :wine:

  9. But wait, is Centrino Celeron-based?

Nope, not at all. It's a completely different design, which runs 1.7 times faster than the P4 per clock on average (that's what I've heard atleast), and uses much less power. Which is why it's like the best notebook CPU ever ^_^ Got the order confirmation today, so it'll hopefully be delivered today if I'm really lucky :wine:

  10. So for some reason IBM decided to have a joint offer with a reseller and some other partners on the X40 and R51. The R51 was being sold for 12990 SEK (instead of the usual 21990 SEK), and the R51 for 11990 SEK. All numbers including VAT and shipping ^_^ So I went to a reseller to look at them, and the X40 was just too small for my taste, so I got the R51 :wine: It should be here sometime next week I think ^_^

  11. Thanks, I'll check those links out :wine:

I honestly don't know what standard I'm going to need though. I thought 802,11g was just an extension of b so you only needed the g version to be able to run both b and g. I guess I'm mistaken. Either way, I can't say what I need unfortunately... I don't need the speed though if that's what you mean.

  12. Yes, it's finally come to it, I'm buying my first laptop B-) I'm going to NZ with school for a course, where we're going to be filming and being able to save and edit on a comp is pretty much necessary. Hence the lappy. I'm also going to start university next year and am going to need a laptop for that, which I'm going to be using to take notes during class and writing essays on. Those are the only things I intend to use it for, atleast as it looks now. So given that background info, here's what I'm looking for:

Centrino! I absolutely need the battery life, both because I'm not going to have anything near constant access to an AC outlet at school or in NZ. So yeah, battery life is good...

Wireless. I know it comes with the whole centrino deal, but I wanted to mention it anyway. Need it for uni.

Firewire. Going to need that to connect the camcorder (and that's it...so if it's cheaper getting a PMCIA card or whatever they're called, and using that, so much the better) Atleast that's what I've heard camcorders connect through...If I'm wrong, please correct me, it'd make choosing ever so much easier ^_^

Relatively lightweight. It doesn't have to be ultraslim (heck, I don't want it to be, it just costs more and feels weird), but somewhere around 3kg (6lbs) or less would be nice. Not an absolute necessity though, I'm pretty confident I can carry more :P

No widescreen. I'm not sure, but I keep seeing them all over the place, and I'm not liking the look of them...might just be me though :wine:

Insurance? I'm not sure what would be appropriate here, as I'm going to NZ, so any info is appreciated :(

So yeah, that's what I'm looking for. And of course, there has to be a budget. Right now, I'm thinking max 15000 SEK which roughly translates into $2000 at the moment. It doesn't feel like prices are reflecting that though for some reason...looks like things that cost $2000 elsewhere cost 20000 SEK here :P Ah well, I guess it's a good thing if it's available in sweden too, seeing as I live there :(

So let's get these ideas rolling now ^_^

  13. It's an unfair advantage, and shouldn't be tolerated. If you know you'll have access to such information and don't want to end up in a situation where you'll want to sell but can not, then just don't own stocks in that company. Simple solution, eh?

  14. The only reason I can think of would be to lessen panic... nobody wants to imagine terrorists with missiles. OTOH, imagining them hijacking planes isn't much better imo, and the missile concept would probably have gotten Bush even more support for his anti-terrorism campaign...

It just seems weird that they'd try to cover it up, no matter if they actually did or not. There just doesn't seem to be any reason.

  15. Bush- OPPOSES RAISING THE NATIONAL MINIMUM WAGE

why does mininum wage need to be raised? many people in our country who are jobless could be working at a minimum wage job and atleast be brining in some income, not complaining that it is bushes fault they have no job/money.

Why shouldn't the minimum wage (MW) be raised? I'm not sure how it works in the US, but atleast here social security has some problems in that if you don't earn anything you get more than if you earn very little. By raising the MW those people would get more incentive to work as they should be able to pass that level where they earn more than what they would get from not working at all.

$500M -> Belgium a very small nation with 10 million citizens spends twice as much...

Belgium isn't fighting a war right now which means they aren't spending millinions of dollars trying to free a nation from a dictator.

HIV/AIDS is a much bigger problem than Saddam ever was. That includes the first gulf war. IMO Bush has the wrong priorities. Now, if the roles had been switched and the 500 millions had been spent on the war, and the billions had been spent on HIV/AIDS research/medicine I'd be much much happier. I'm fully aware that something like that will never happen though, so nevermind that.

  16. 34 for me. Just check which ones belong to the system (check user) and if anyone else is using the computer they might have some processes still running from when they logged out. Just check if you know what the others are and if you know what they are and know that it's fine to shut them down, just do it :P
