  1. Yep, you're right about that, you can't be 100% historacly accurate in a game. Well I guess they split them up because to the Romans the Gauls were their most feared enemy, they even sacked Rome in +/- 320 BC, something not even the Carthagians managed to do. Anyway, as you might see, in 0ad the Celts are split up: Britons, Gauls and Iberians. They were the three main groups.
  2. Gauls didn't have closer relations to the Celts, they were Celts. The Gauls is generally something the Romans invented to name a certain region and the people who lived there. The region was called Gaul (Gallia), so the Celts living there were also called Gauls. There are a few exception, some tribes in Belgica (a region in Gallia, now Belgium, part of The Netherlands, France and Germany) were probably Germanic and some tribes who lived close to the Rhine. I think you think of Celts are those who live(d) in Brittain and Ireland? Well, they certainly looked like Celts and the Romans wrote they were descendants of tribes from Belgica. We always thought there was a Celtic invasion in Brittain and Ireland, but recently some historians are telling there aren't any really proofs of that invasion. So some people are guessing there were no Celts in Brittain or Ireland, that they were merely influenced by them. Another possibility is that the Celts lived there forever, but that's quite impossible since the actual Celts originate from Eastern Europe (I'm not sure if I'm right here, could be Asia). Anyway, the differences between Germans and Celts are mainly the languages and the way they lived. Celts built towns, sometimes walled and fortified. Germans lived scattered, in small communities. Celts were a lot more advanced, comparable to the Romans. Germans were not, Tacitus refers to them as quite lazy and only caring about free time, drinking and fighting. That's one similarity though, both Celts and Germans liked to fight. I read somewhere that if a Celtic tribe didn't find an enemy to fight long enough they fought other Celtic tribes. If there weren't any other tribes to fight against they fought against eachother. Something about the Huns. You can't really place them with Germans. They have absolutely nothing in common, except that they were enemies, and both enemies of Rome. The Huns are the reason why the Germans invaded Gaul and eventually Rome, they were being fought in their homeland by the Huns, so they fled. You better use the Huns as a civilization on its own if you want to be historically correct.
  3. Yeah, screw that computer! away with the darn thing! Strange how our lives differ from that of our parents, they had no pc, and for us it has become almost something essential. Well, not for every teenager, but the past 2 years (I'm speaking for my country now), tons of people of my age started using the pc and internet a lot. Most of them only chat with it though, atleast we do something useful with it But sometimes I think back about the golden 60s, when technology still hadn't troubled our minds so much. Actually I wish I could live then, enjoy more the essential things in life instead of things that are just so superficial in reality. Maybe that's why I like surfmusic that much, that scene is the reincarnation of the 60s, or Sartre for example. Well, I envy my father a lot you know
  4. I used to waste my time to stupid things about 2.5 years ago, that year I failed at school. Well, I was pretty lazy back then, wasn't really interested in school, so I got a very severe punishment: redoing my year at school. So, then I quite realized I should study every day. My mother also told me to study 2 hour a day, although I didn't do that. Best thing to do imo, is always making all your tasks, and study lessons of which you'll either get a test or aren't good at. I never studied for stuff like history, latin, english, etc., because I could get good marks without looking at it. So that saved me quite some time. I did have to give up some stuff though, I left DGDN for example, I stopped designing and gamed a lot less. Especially (although odd to say being in a design team) gaming is a big waste of precious time. Now I had 3 months of vacation I wasted a lot of my time to that instead of doing some serious things like learning more php, reading more books, etc. Imagine you have a gf, then you have a lot less time, 1/3 to half of my time goes into time spending with my gf, so I had to give up more in order to keep doing the things I enjoyed most. So basicly you have to find a balance between essential things (school, social contact) and your hobbies. It's not easy, but sometimes you simply have to give up some hobbies, it'll help you in the future. My "hobby filter" mainly applies to stuff that won't get me any further, like gaming, chatting, etc. It's a personal matter though, but I really advice you to make some time free for school, failing a year is one of the worset things that can happen.
  5. Note about Celts, Gauls and Germans: Actually Gauls are Celts, not Germans. There are exceptions however, but mainly a few border tribes. For Celts you better have a cheif in a war chariot, since in most cases they rode those. I thought Celts rather relied more on horses then Germans, but again there are exceptions for some tribes. Nice ideas though!
  6. Lol, if they want to hunt down everyone using kazaa for illegal activities they will have to sue half of the internet users I thought they were just after those providing the illegal material, which is sensible imo. But still, I have no problems with those providing mp3s, ISOs, cracks or rips of products by certain companies or so-called artists, they have been treating small companies, labels or musicians unfairly long enough, so this is what happens if you think you can do what you want.
  7. Nice idea Tim! Did you make it yourself or was it a mod you found somewhere (if so please link me).
  8. I hardly watch tv, only the news but that's usually it. Too much brainless entertainment imo. Yep Alias (they showed it a while here) is pretty cool (for both reasons mentioned here ).
  9. Yep you're right about that going into detail lol
  10. Yeah, I agree the [title] thing or even the topic to bring to the top each time is spam, like I said in the [title] one, it's obviously for people with too much time on their hands I don't see what the problem is with "how much time do you have sex". It is after all just a topic about everyday life. I don't want to offend anyone here, but this does make me feel a little bit angry sometimes. Some people think it's normal to talk about guns and abnormal to talk about sex. Sex is after all a pleasure in life and shouldn't be neglected or keepen away from the younger ones among us. If we're just talking about normal sex on a civilised way I don't see what the problem is, we all do or will do it. Guns is another matter to me, it's violent, and violence is somewhere at the top of my list of things I hate.
  11. [i have too much time on my hands so I post the utmost nonsense - button clicked]
  12. Why? Well I first played AoE, like for most people it introduced me to the RTS genre, and in those days the game really blew me away (I was coming from Wolf 3D and Commander Keen ). AoK, ehm, mainly because of the editor. I never played starcraft, so it was the first game to introduce triggers to me. Secondly because of the historical aspect, and thirdly, well it was almost a perfect game, everything went smooth, everything was easy to understand (no cluttered GUI like with EE or many other RTS's). AoM pretty much for the diversity of the civs. In AoK the civs were basicly just the same, except for unique units, some graphics and some technologies (and the unit/tech tree). AoM added god powers, unique myth units, unique units for each civ (well the 3 main ones), and most importantly, each civ works different. The hero system is different, resource gathering methods, etc. Well, maybe it's a bit of a rip off from warcraft, but it makes the game a lot more diverse. So, Jason, since you're collecting some idea for 0ad to make it a great game I'll summarize it - bring something new/original that will blow people's socks off (yep I know it's hard) - make it easy to understand (so people will know the basics after a few mins) - make it diverse Of course that's not the recipe to the ultimate RTS, but I hope it helps (well, I'm just repeating what many have said I guess).
  13. You should watch out with the cost of the defensive buildings though. Remember what happened in AoK/TC, TC rushes became very common and were lame and easy to do. I remember the same thing in the AoM Multi Alpha, lots of tower rushes. A defensive building is after all defensive, not offensive.
  14. Yep, ingame browser would be really helpful. It's like with those shooter Wijit, you simply get a list of servers/people hosting games and select the one you want. Something else I would like is something to set player experience (optional). That way beginners can play against beginners, etc.
  15. Maybe you could do this for certain buildings. For example defensive and economical buildings can only be built inside your borders and military buildings outside. That way rushing is still possible, but you clear out the building rush (with castles, towers, TC's).
  16. Windows 98 was the biggest pain in the butt I ever had (computer-wise), crash fest every day. Well, now I have WinXP Home, and it's a big improvement. It still isn't as stable as I would like to have it. And it's still a Microsoft product, meaning not enough customization unless you want to dig up some money, or not enough compatibility with all those great open sources apps/languages. If I ever have the courage I'll buy a good Linux distro, but I just don't want to do anything wrong with my laptop, and I'm not such a computer expert. You see, I have three partitions (data, backup, restore). If you make one out of them, install Linux, but then want to switch to win again I have no clue how to make those partitions again (since one is a winxp restore). Anyway, lets wait until TCPA makes me angry enough to move to Linux
  17. Yep I agree, AoK was and still is a great game. Next to that I would only play AoM, since it's has such a clean look and feeling.
  18. My dad used to be a farmer (retired now), and we mainly sold eggs. The funny thing is I hardly eat eggs, a few times a year maybe.
  19. It took me 1 hour (bike, bus, another bus, walk) But starting from next week 5mins on bike!
  20. Oh, yep forgot the music thing. Actually kazaa and the likes are fantastic to discover new music. Instead of waisting your money to cds or records you're not too sure off you just download a few songs to hear it's good. If not, trashcan, otherwise I'll go buy them. It's really useful for a surfmusic freak like me. You find tons of songs on band sites, but kazaa also has a lot to offer, quite strange how surfmusic is so popular in that community. The thing with surf is that if you want those obscure 60s records or songs you'll either have to dig up a lot of money (eg. the cowabunga boxed set is 250$US) or you simply won't find it anymore. Fortunatly some people put this stuff on kazaa, so I can listen to it and learn to play them. I do have problems with people downloading music because they don't want to buy a cd. Ok, if it's a record of one of those mainstream "artists" or bands you hear on commercial radio I have absolutely no problems with it, those guys also steal music, money and public from the underground genres. But if you do this with a band not belonging to those @#$%s you'll have me kicking your @#$%, you don't know how much emotion, creativity, sweat, blood and time goes into this So, just download stuff if there's no other option, otherwise just buy the record, underground genres/bands' records are really cheap ($8 - $14 max).
  21. Welcome Black Op! I hope you won't point any guns at us
  22. Lol, why are you filtering h ell out? Anyway, welcome greeneggsnham
