  1. Yeah, I think the Vikings were Nomads.

And Ghengis and the Horde did stay were they conquered, although they moved on too. This is pretty contrary to popular belief. Ghenghis Khan was himself illiterate but he knew a lot about how to rule people. Within his united Empire, he encouraged trade (from one end to the other, that's what- 4000 miles? idk). He had a policy of letting people practice their own religion, but the Empire was linked in that they all paid tribute to him. There was a Mongol Police Force that was found throughout the Empire. Trade routes were official, and some say that the black death traveled around Europe using his trade routes. Also some say that was the cause of the Renaissance (which I believe, along with the Crusades). Anyways, his empire was truly the biggest empire the world has ever seen, rather than an empire in name only.

I agree with Klaas about the astrological arguement (well, I do, if I understand what he's saying correctly). I really don't believe in Aliens doing or influencing anything on earth. In fact, personally, I think Atlantis didn't exist.

I think someone made this up along the way to impress people (not neccissarily Plato, but I think he got the story from Egyptian Priests if I remember correctly). THink about it, if your job is to tell stories to people about history, and you want to be liked in your city, why not make up a lil' story to capture the people's imaginitive side. No one would try and argue with you, and everyone would be fascinated with it. When you look at descriptions of Atlantis, it seems like everything a person could want out of the greatest kingdom ever.

hey, and it even has a cool name! :P

  2. Just a historical note- from a secular standpoint, the main purpose of religion is to be a set of rules to promote social order. Interestingly enough, one of the most effective examples of this is Confucianism in Classical China. And Confucianism is debated about whether or not it's religion. Confucius said that he didn't teach about the supernatural (God) because he couldn't even understand the natural.

Now I don't exactly agree with not worrying about supernatural because frankly, I don't understand either:)!

But it is interesting about what exactly is a Religion. Hmmm...

  3. Haha I've heard of it. BTW, this is a new post since it's a different topic.

It has to do with cloaking a ship, the USS Elridge or something like that. Well, anyways, some other ship saw the USS Elridge appear from thin air (in Philidelphia I think). Then theres this debate about Eintein's laws in cloaking stuff from radar or sight.

It sounds like a bunch of crap to me, but whatever. What does that have to do with either Atlantis or Numenor?

  4. The Huns and the Mongols? that's no coincidence.

Traditionally, nomadic people have always given sedentary people (Rome, Persia, China) a hard time. This is due to a whole bunch of facts- First: Nomads must live a mobile lifestyle (well, duh that's what nomad is), so they adapt to having little more than neccesity and leading a tough life where if you want something done, you gotta get dirty and do it yourself (lol). Second: Nomadic Culture=>No farming=>Hunting and Gathering cannot have food surplus=>No chance to form cities or settle down (ie worry about wants versus neccesseties). So this means that they stay in small groups, and frequently fight against each other. These battles can be rough and some tribes have customary battles (see Pre-Islam Arabia). Also, Calvary is often adapted for nomadic lifestyles (Huns, MONGOLS duh- camels for the Arabs). So far that means these people are...

    1.)Mobile

    2.)Tough

    3.)Used to living hard life

4.)Technologically behind, also they don't own a lot.

    5.)Excellent military, untraditional warfare tactics.

Now these nomads see the 'soft' settled down rich, fat cultures of China and Rome and have the oppurtunity to take some booty in, or get "even" for having to work hard to live while people live in luxury in cities. Also their untraditional warfare techniques (Mongol feigned retreat, etc) and large amount of cavalry (the entire Mongol army save siege trains was cavalry) made them hugely successful in military aspects.

Now this was probably a little more than you hoped to see, but it clears up why nomads don't just coincedently move on west to terrorize the sedentary populace. Anyways, I hope you learned something.

Now what's really a mystery is why the Mongols didn't take Europe... I'll get into that sometime else... Sorry, I'm fascinated with the relation of Nomads and Sedentary peoples.

    Im done now! :P

  5. Well, I had written a report on Atlantis a couple years back and it would have been really great to post here, but it's nowhere to be found in my documents. All I remember is that there was a country with different kingdoms whose princes met every 4th and 5th year or something like that. There were canals from the Ocean to the Capital in the center, and the capital had differents walls and city areas (like Minas Tirith, except I think there were only 3 or 4 walls) and the inner wall was made of adamant or something. Sounds crazy. Oh yeah they had these canals all over that were like 200 feet wide and 100 feet tall and there were Mountains and farms... It was pretty crazy.

If I ever do find it, I'll post it up here.
