  1. Hmm - some torrents are just slow, period, if there aren't enough seeders in the swarm. Let's try a torrent I *know* is very active right now (y) The latest episode of NerdTV: http://distribution.nerdtv.net/video/ntv00...006.mp4.torrent

I've been connected (using uTorrent) for 2 minutes and am getting ~385KB/s down.

Since you say you are directly connected to the cable modem, it can't be a router/port-fowarding issue. It could be a firewall problem, but a firewall like Norton should ask if the client should be allowed through and configure itself. You could try changing port numbers in the client to something other than 6881 - long shot, but your ISP might be blocking the standard BitTorrent port.

  2. What about a pad of paper and a pencil? (y)

But... but... that's not geeky enough! It only qualifies if it involves complex installations, convoluted configurations, maddening dependancy issues, and has sufficient buzzword-yness on the box. Bonus points if it involves RSS or IPTV.

  3. Well, that didn't work either. It appears that my firewall or router is acting up. Router becomes a problem because it is not hooked up to the machine anymore, guess I'll have to reset that (y) One time I managed to get a download rate of 25kbs, but that was it. Now it is cruising at 9kb upload, 2 kb download.

(Even though it's almost definetly not a client-side issue, I'll throw my digs in for a particular client anyway ((y)): I really like uTorrent. Before I found this, Azureus was my hands-down favorite, but also was a resource hog. uTorrent takes less than four megabytes of memory while running and is somewhere around 80KB in size. Highly recommended (y))

Most likely, it's a router/firewall issue. It could just be that you haven't given the torrent enough time to "get going" (there seems to be a warm-up period as the client connects to other peers, then it usually takes off), but it sounds like you have. BitTorrent uses port 6881 as a default (IIRC). It's possible that your router is blocking it. Could you go into more detail about your network setup? Can you try using the UPnP option in your client (if it has one; [shameless plug]uTorrent does :)[/shameless plug])?

  4. Great list, Paul -- woot! (y) I think it's time for the studios, collectively, to make a turnaround, and it looks like that's exactly where it looks like everything's headed in the next few years. Even the execs are finally admitting (see linked article) the past few years have been really pathetic in terms of really good movies :)

    Splinter Cell (2006) - OH YEAH (y)

WOOT! (y) If this is done right, it will rock. I had a thought recently... I've been watching 24 recently (catching up on seasons 1-4 before season 5 starts - had never seen it before a couple of months ago). Dennis Haysbert, who plays David Palmer in 24, also plays the voice of Lambert in Pandora Tomorrow. I wonder if he'll play the "real" Lambert in the SC movie? (y)

    Did some lookups for Abby:

Nine Lives - 2005 (not sure exactly when)

    Charlotte's Web - 2006

The Secret Life of Bees - 2006

Anyone notice how BIG 2006 and 2007 will be in terms of potentially huge movies coming out? (y)

  5. I've been looking for something similar as well. (IMHO, what would be ideal for me would be a rich web app (AJAX, etc) that let me do all that)

Unfortunately (and inefficiently), I usually use Notepad or even my GMail account (sending messages to myself) for reminders or notes. :)

  6. I've played with dual monitors under Windows XP a bit:

    1) By default, it should only maximize 'into' one screen. Some applications (such as ATI's 'HydraVision' app) might let you configure this to function differently.

    2) It somewhat depends on the full-screen program in question. Some games won't let you work on the 2nd monitor while playing on the 1st, for example. (Apparently, some do let you, but I haven't tried it myself)

    3) You can drag a screen halfway, even something goofy like a media player playing a video file. AFAICT, Windows treats it as one big 'virtual desktop', but two seperate screens.

  7. Could just be a 'cheapo' keyboard, unfortunately :( You could try a different one to see if that'll isolate the problem.

On a related (and humorous) note, a friend of mine once spilled quite a bit of some sticky strawberry drink right onto my keyboard. I couldn't clean it all off, and a few days later the keys were so sticky that they'd stick down when I pressed them! ;) I actually opened it up, washed all the keys and plastic parts with warm, soapy water, dried everything, and put it back together. (I also learned how modern keyboards work in the process)

It worked fine when I put it all back together, and I hammered on it for a couple more months beforeI noticed another problem: some keys would send more than one character to the computer (very odd). For example, if I pressed the 'x' key, the output would be 'cx'. It was always adjacent letters, so I figured it must've been the small pads underneath slipping out of position after I put it back together. I opened it up and tried to fix it up, but then it stopped working all together - I think some electric connections became loose. Anyhow, I'm using a different keyboard now :)

  8. I got some autographs from some of the Spurs (basketball) players. Other than that, I haven't really met any celebrities.

On the nerdy and/or geeky side of things, however... I have a gold-plated MSN 8 install CD that's autographed by Bill Gates (got it for participating in the MSN 8 beta program). I also had some e-mail correspondence with Mike Kidd of Ensemble Studios once :)

  9. Well I know my brother plays it often, but he says that it is all cheating now like with almost all games one plays for a long time to build up a character (think of Diablo2). :(

Hmm, even with Punkbuster? :) It's been my experience that the Punkbuster team responds to new hacks and cheats very quickly.
