  1. I saw it on opening night! :) A large group of us went to the theater at about 11PM on December 8th. (We actually "reserved" (using coats) almost an entire row)

I thought the movie was great. It's always a bit odd seeing a book you've loved adapted into a film, but I was pleased overall with how it turned out. (I think I would've chosen someone else to compose the music, as I felt the musical themes weren't all too strong, but it was certainly still good.)

I think I want to see it again, as I suspect I'd enjoy it even more the second time around. My theory is this: the first time you watch a book-to-film transformation, you tend to be a little underwhelmed, because it's never exactly "how you imagined it". The second time, you can really enjoy it.

Here's to hoping Prince Caspian is next! ;)

  2. I was thinking of buying some music there, but I don't have my own credit card, and I feel squeamish about using my parents' credit card on a site I'm not so sure about. :) (If they supported PayPal, that'd be better...)

  3. Having an archive like that is a Good Thing, but sometimes people get too nostalgic. Every time there is a discussion of user interfaces, for example, there are bound to be people who ramble on about how great some ancient computer from Xerox PARC, or BeOS or whatever, were - completely ignoring the many problems these systems had. And while some of the ideas from these older design indeed deserve a revival today, there really are good reasons why these computers/systems are things of the past.

    LOL - well said. ;)

My bad, I was just really confused :)

Perhaps you were thinking of the FTP protocol? I believe that 'chdir' is part of that.

  4. Didn't like the interface, as far as I can remember from when I last used it anyway

Yeah, AVG's interface isn't the best, but I like it anyway. I've used ClamAV as well, for "set it and forget it" protection on a media PC.

  5. Funny you should ask about an 800MHz CPU - I'm currently "stuck" on an 800MHz Celeron-based machine (running Ubuntu 5.10 :P). My main rig has been down for a while, so I threw together a temporary computer so I could at least browse the web and do some basic work.

I haven't actually tried to do DVD decoding, as it doesn't have a DVD drive (just a plain 'ol CD-ROM). However, I was surprised to find that mplayer could decode XviD video in real time (pretty smooth playback).I didn't expect an 800MHz budget CPU to pull that off.

Have you read all the various "build" stories on mini-itx.com? Some people have been able to squeeze mini-ITX systems into some *very* creative cases. :)

As for a remote control, I'd look here: http://www.lirc.org/

I've never actually used lirc or built the serial port receiver, but I see lots of people recommending this type of thing on various media PC forums.

Are you going to use a frontend, like MythTV? ;)

  6. I think it is just plain wrong! I mean what's the point? Like those thing that say "Find true love NOW!" but they put a bad picture of a girl. I think it's more like falling in love with there body NOT them. If that made any sense at all.

Yeah, it did make sense, and I totally agree with you here. I think culture is hyper-obsessed with looks or appearance, instead of what really matters - the heart. I'd rather have nice, friendly people for friends than some racy model. :)

Back on the subject of myspace.com, I've seen a lot of stuff about MySpace security issues recently - apparently, some clever people have been able to hack the site to add millions of friends, or something similar. ;) Not very secure code, perhaps?

  7. It was automatically generated, it found that black hole seemsed to be the keyword on the page so it decided to sell them

Yeah, I have a feeling eBay has mass-registered a Google ad for every possible word in the dictionary that could be a product or thing. (New meaning to the phrase "dictionary search"?)

I've noticed some goofy things (albeit not as goofy as 'black hole'). Especially stuff with bad grammar: for example, a search for "Intel DVX2934A" might result in an ad saying "Buy Intel, Intel network on eBay!" :)

(Yeah, I made that product number up...)

  8. Just listened to your podcast - nice. :) The background music is somewhat distracting, as is the "uh, ah, err". Aside from my obligatory constructive criticism, I'd say it's a great first start.

Oddly enough, I liked your voice... :D I agree that Americans find the British accent interesting. I'd say it sounds very 'refined' to us. (I've always wondered what the American accent sounds like to Brits)

  9. The BestBuy here puts things out late. :D I was trying to get GTASA the first day it came out and noone had a clue about it, then half an hour later they found the stash in the back.

LOL... some friends and I tried to get BFME from Best Buy the day it came out as well. They gave us the DVD version, which wouldn't work, then spent like 20 minutes in the back digging for it. Someone finally found a copy and we bought it. :)

  10. Been using OO.o 2.0 a bit recently - not bad at all. :) It's closer than I had guessed to being an "Office killer".

The sooner people realize that spending $400 on an office suite (after spending $200 on the OS itself) is not necessary anymore, the sooner Microsoft will have to start rethinking their strategy and business structure.

Just because people buy Office and Windows in droves, doesn't mean that they actually like it. Maybe they just buy it because it's the only viable option, realistically speaking. Once an alternative is up to par both from both a technical/programming perspective and in terms of popularity/media attention, Microsoft's revenue could take a sharp dip.

  11. If anything, don't go with a computer that has less than 512MB of memory. I consider that the bare minimum for running modern operating systems and applications. (If you are a very patient person, and don't have a lot of large programs running, you might be able to squeeze by with 256MB. I simply don't recommend it because the overall experience can be so much better with 512MB.)

I understand your need to get a budget system that will do basic tasks (word processing, browsing, etc). Someone whose parents I had done some technical support for once came to me and needed a cheap budget machine about a year ago - after a lot of pricing out of components and asking for recommendations (this forum is a great resource for system recommendations) I put together a system for about $US400-450 that was decent and could get the job done. Part of the reason it was cheaper was because I went with a prebuilt "barebones system", which includes the case, power supply, and motherboard. The rest of the components were purchased at the same time and installed by me.

So, I suppose what I'm trying to say is: it's quite possible :) I would certainly not recommend going with the system you posted, but to look around, ask for recommendations (here, even), look for sales, specials, and so on.
