  1. BTW, the answers have to come out of your head - no Googling allowed :(

Actually, the largest 3.5" hard drives available today are 400GB, but LaCie has a 1.6TB "Bigger Disk Extreme" external drive which apparently uses an array of normal drives and appears as one big hard drive to a USB or Firewire-enabled computer. :D

  2. I've been in need of a CD that includes all my standard tools and utilities lately - I frequently go fix computers on-site and carry a small CD flip-binder I nicknamed my "toolkit". I've got some essentials: Knoppix, Windows UBCD, XP SP2 install CD (straight from Microsoft), and a couple others, but one thing I really need is a handy compilation of the software tools I use often. Since I don't always have a broadband Internet hookup on-site (or I disabled it, to prevent malware from phoning home), a CD compilation is the perfect way to go.

Apparently, Lorian thought of this around the same time I did... great minds think alike!

There already are a few similar projects; TheOpenCD being the only one I can think of at the moment. However, the list of programs on TheOpenCD is a bit short. I know a WHOLE lot more freeware can be crammed onto a CD! :D

Perhaps we can pool our resources and do this jointly? Anyone have recommendations for programs? I'll try to get a list of my nominations together soon.

  3. Are your PCs (and hence your laptop) connecting through a router? Since your laptop is able to access the Internet, it apparently is talking to the network somewhat.

What does winipcfg tell you on the laptop? And, likewise, what does ipconfig tell you on the desktop machines (assuming they run WinXP)?

Can the laptop ping one of the desktops, and vice versa?

  4. EDIT: Seconad paragraph of that new thing: monthly updates... That give a virus maker a whole month to get their virus and spread it out :\

LOL, good point. The "big boys" (Norton, McAfee, etc) basically distribute updates as soon as a new virus is found.

Of course, Microsoft will probably turn this into another cash cow - the normal monthly updates service costs a certain amount, but it will cost extra to have immediate access to updates. :D Leave it to Microsoft to make money off their own security holes.

  5. (what kind of a name is that???)

I concur... that's got to be one of the most generic, uncreative names I've seen for a software product. It's right up there with "free" downloads that are unceasingly titled in the format "NOUN ADJECTIVE Pro XP 2004 9.0". :D

Ugh, just saw this: Microsoft's entering the antivirus market. *groan* Ever notice that Microsoft just purchases small companies, slaps their name on a product, and calls it "innovation"?

  6. Give me a linkie, and I'll check it out.

Enemy Territory is a free version of Wolfenstein. 3D Gamers has some info on it: http://www.3dgamers.com/games/wolfensteinet/

Good suggestion Klaas, didn't think of ET :( I'm not too sure of the system requirements, but I don't think they are too high. I do know that a few of us (Centurion_13, Josh) have lower-end systems that probably wouldn't run it.

EDIT: LOL, I just noticed that it is rated "M". :D I've played it before, and I don't remember it being very violent or gory.

  7. Today's forum party was a great success! :D

Naturally, we're already beginning to plan the next one. What game should we play? I've listed the games that I know are common around the forums, but feel free to suggest something. AOK is (obviously) easiest since it's the most ubiquitous.

Does Saturday, Jan 15th sound good?

  8. Is it 10, or is it 100? There's quite a difference between them B)

(The DVD seems to be about 50Gbit for 100 minutes of video, which is only 8.5Mbps, so it wouldn't be a problem anyway. But I have an 11Mbps HDTV movie which wouldn't quite work over my 10Mbps network B))

Most of the network is 100Mbps. I've got some older hardware here and there that only has 10Mbps cards. I was streaming the DVDover a 100Mbps link, to be sure B)

An 11Mbps stream would work fine on a 100Mbps link, but it's just a tad too big for a 10Mbps network (frustratingly, I assume). :D Is transcoding/compressing a possibility?

@Quacker: When you open a file/disc/device from the File menu, the resulting dialog box includes a Stream output checkbox near the bottom, which allows you to stream the data in question.

The various protocol options can be a bit confusing. To stream the DVD, I used the UDP streaming option and entered the IP address of the other computer, though you can enter a "multicast address" to allow streaming to multiple machines at once. The VideoLAN website has some basic documentation of this; I'll see if I can find you some links.

  9. It's a power of two.  Computer people like powers of two (computer use binary; base-two)

    8, 16, 32, 64, 128, 256, 512, and so on... all common numbers in computing and/or common texture sizes for games. :D

Nice initiative, HyperSonic! If I knew C++ on a more-than-basic level, I'd help. B) 2D platform games are always fun - brings back the memories of gaming under DOS.
