  1. Wow, those are some nice programs ;) I've used Premiere in the past for compositing (I like making short films).

I'd recommend Brinkster.com for free hosting (Educational Plan). They give you a lot (even ASP support!), as long as you don't need a lot of upstream bandwidth - it's limited at 15MB per day, or somewhere around there. I just signed up so I can do some ASP development without setting up a local M$ web server ;)

If you need PHP support, there are probably some other free hosts around - haven't looked lately.

By the way, welcome to WFG! B)

  2. I read somewhere that  Verizon was testing out fiber optic dsl in some town in Texas. If I remember is was only 45 a month and with that you got 15 megabit connection! B) But that is in testing phases in that town only. ;)

    Welcome to wfg.

Yep, 'tis Fiber to the Premises. Verizon's service is called Fios and is available here: http://www22.verizon.com/fiosforhome/chann...rnetForHome.asp

Aww, it's not available in my area yet... ;)

  3. Mmm... I'd take one of these in a second if someone gave one to me :wine:

    *back to the real world*

It costs $400, so I'll be waiting a lot longer than 4 months to get it. :P Looks awesome though; I've always wanted to give OS X a try. I think it could be superior to Windows if it weren't for the lack of software.

  4. Haha, that's funny.

I think, though, that the technical reasons for this behaviour might be the fact that Googlebot is a spider which follows any link on a webpage, and therefore also the "posting" link - but since it can't perform POST-requests (sending the Post-FORM), it won't complete the posting action. The user system recognizes that it followed the post-link, though and therefore shows it on the active users page :wine:

I believe your hunch is right, Malte :P

  5. If you get the Retail version of the FX-55 (which you should, as opposed to the OEM version), an AMD-approved heatsink & fan will be in the package. :wine:

PSU = Power Supply Unit, the device that converts AC power from the wall into the proper DC current for computer components. I'd recommend an Antec, Fortron, or Sparkle PSU, or a few other reputable companies. A lot of PSU's available on the market are worthless, and may very well do damage to your components. I'd recommend reading this VERY informative article about it: http://www.hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=792566 :P

  6. Hey everyone.

I am probably getting a new computer!!!!

(finally, this one sucks.. I'll give me sister this one)

    Rules,

    • Unlimited money (Quality is more important than price)
    • All parts must be compatable
    • I want minimum of 3 hard drives, 4 would be prefered (1 large HD, 2-3 medium sized hard drives) so I can
    • Extra points if the hardware supports linux (I want to try it out on one of the hard drives, which is why I want a fourth one)
    • Must be available in australia(can be imported I suppose but prefer it it can be bought in australia without requiring imports)
I would like High quality sound and graphics card...
    • 512mb is minimum ram but the higher the better
    • speakers, screen, mouse and keyboard are optional.
    • Must provide a link to the pieces site and price

I would really appreciate the help, while I know a bit, I just dont know enough..

Ill be happy to answer any other questions required.

(yes this computer will be built so that means you need to include all the pieces.)

PS while im here, I seen a few places while that you can link 2 CPUs together to get double speed or something, is this possible, any links to where I can get info on it.

Mmm... these are the types of projects I like to work on! :P

I want minimum of 3 hard drives, 4 would be prefered (1 large HD, 2-3 medium sized hard drives) so I can

So you can... what? Do you have any "lean" towards a RAID setup, SATA HDDs, Raptors (:)), etc?

Must be available in australia(can be imported I suppose but prefer it it can be bought in australia without requiring imports)

Ack, NewEgg doesn't ship to Austrailia. :P I usually go with them for all my computer components. Not too much of a problem though, I'm sure there are comparable retailers "down under". :D

I would like High quality sound and graphics card...

    Definetly...

512mb is minimum ram but the higher the better

I'd go with 1GB, personally. It's dirt-cheap right now and extra RAM is always useful.

speakers, screen, mouse and keyboard are optional.

Optional? Pretty hard to use a computer without those! :)

Just kidding... I assume this means you already have these parts and just need the "brain"?

PS while im here, I seen a few places while that you can link 2 CPUs together to get double speed or something, is this possible, any links to where I can get info on it.

You must be thinking of dual-processor setups. This website has a bunch of information on this: http://www.2cpu.com/daedalus/article_archive.php

Generally, a dual-proc setup gives more power (obviously), but at a large cost premium. Also, not many "consumer" motherboards come in dual-proc variants, so you could get stuck with a server board (less features oriented towards consumer and gaming applications).

If you have any links to computer retailers in Austrailia, or web stores that ship to Austraila, I can spec out some rigs for you. :)

  7. When I installed Mandrake on a secondary HD, LILO automatically edited the MBR of my primary (Windows) HD and set everything up so I could dual-boot between Windows and Linux. Didn't need to configure anything manually, very nice :) Keep that in mind if you are planning on installing Mandrake.

  8. I was about to suggest installing Linux on a secondary hard drive, but it seems you already have that taken care of :P

As for a boot menu, you could always install Lilo or some other bootloader on the primary MBR. I'm not too familiar with this sort of thing, but I'm sure someone else here is (Frank, Carlos, Phillip?). It's not too hard; I've done it before, but as messing with the MBR is a tad bit dangerous, I don't want to give you any errant instructions :)

    Have fun! :)
