  1. Democracy can go with socialism (an economic system) just as well as capitalism.  Just look at the 'welfare states' like Canada and most of W Europe (I've heard those countries are starting to run into trouble though, do any Europeans agree?).

Well, it depends on what do you mean for "troubles".

Some years ago people began to be insufferent about taxes: they were too high.

So governments began to cut them, by reducing public services (health care, education, and so on). Now that the welfare state has been so diminished, many people are unhappy because the services, that once used to be free, now are quite expensive, and expenses have overcome by far the amount of tax cuts.

But this leads us far away from the democracy issue into an economic one...

  2. Well Bilbo says "The Eagles! The Eagles are coming!" in the Hobbit, which is also said by Pippin in LotR. :P

Good try, but not correct. :P

Bilbo repeats it in both the Hobbit and FotR.

Hint: he's actually remembering the occasion in wich he said it for the first time...

    :P

  3. Kind of :P , sorry.

We should focus our votes on politicians who are against militaristic issues, worldwide. In theese days it seems we are far from that. Bush, Blair, Putin. Berlusconi (do not laugh, even if ridiculous, he has done a great deal of damage to us all): they all are (sadly) firmly on the saddle.

  4. Forth Eorlingas!, cries the king of the sons of Eorl, urging them to join the crusade against Balack Op. Unfortunatly they forget to bring the always complaining Holbytla with them (or maybe they refused to ride to dedicate themselves to the 5 0'clock tea), so they are forced to come back, and since they were hungry they easily convice the Halfling to organize a nice feast, with a big signs wich said "Everyone welcome, Happy Hour from 20.00 to 21.00. Please, leave your weaponary to the gardrobe" A smiling Tulkas ensures that everyone puts down their weapons.

    :P

  5. Northmen scouts were able enough to put up a fake host, undistinguisheable from the original: a perfect example of "maskirovka", wich was utterly destroyed leaving untouched the real cavalry horde. The horde continues his travel to join with the proud, even if fattty, Holbytla.

  6. Rohirwine switches allegiances (i'll deal with my reputation later :P ), raises a host of sons of Eorl and rushes in help of the small Holbytla, on their way theiy pick up some bands of fellow Northmen (some scouts are always welcome to protect the flanks of a marching formation).

    Forth Eorlingas!

  7. Also, I highly doubt that Charles the Bold's plans were to become King of France; on the contrary, he wanted to be rid of the French influence and create his own Kingdom, stretching from the Low Countries to Burgundy. He had nearly achieved that when he was finally defeated (he had made too many enemies; the Swiss, the men of Lotharingen (Lorraine), the French, as well as some of his own citizens, who rebelled).

Well, in Italy we use to say that hunger comes while eating...

...moreover i only reported something i read in the proceedings of an old international simposium over medieval Switzerland. I cannot even recall the name of it... ...my fault.

  8. What does "greatest" mean?

If it is referred to the number of the opposing forces maybe Stalingrad and Kursk are the biggest ones.

If it refers to the historical importance, well, that should be treated period by period.

As an istance: one of the most important battles in medieval world was that fought at Benevento in 1266. It ended the influence of the Sacred Roman Empire over Italy, thus making it impossible to the german emperors to deal with mediterranean politics (the mediterranean area was of prime importance under the economical and political point of view). But even if this was one of the most important battles, does anyone remember it? I do not think so. Other very important battles from the late medieval period were Grandson, Morat and Nancy (1476) where Charles of Bourgogne was defeated (and killed, in the last one) by swiss militias, thus being frustrated in his plan to climb up to the french crown.

    Cheers

  9. Completely true.

Here in Italy it's very common to find people going to church, or even marry in churches without being believers. It's kind of a social habit.

I myself used to go to the church when i was a boy, even if at that time i had many doubts about what that kind of cerimonials had to do with god.

Later on, when i come to be an atheist, i ceased to go there (a little coherence, in the end ^_^ )
