  1. The major difference here, Quacker (and I'd think you'd realize this), is that victims of serial killers are (by and large) not willing participants.

What about the "gentleman cannibal" from Germany? Would that be considered normal since it was an act between two consenting adults?

...are (by and large) not willing participants...

Notice the (by and large) phrase I used? I had that case in mind when I typed that post. In that case, I'm not even sure one should prosecute the guy for murder. It's actually more like an assisted suicide. At any rate, the guy is clearly a physical danger to society and should at the very least be confined to some sort of mental institution. Hmm, that might be a subject for a whole nother thread. LOL!

  2. Darn it... I DLed them off a site that details Bush's 2003 budget... but that was almost a year ago... so... lemme look into it for you. :P

In the meantime, here is a website I found that goes into pretty good detail on Military spending: http://www.cdi.org/budget/2004/

This one doesn't detail hard figures, and focuses mainly on R&D (Research and Development) budgets, but has some interesting information as well as some charts: http://www.aaas.org/spp/rd/pr020603.pdf

  3. I am of the mind that we have the resources to do both explore space and solve problems here on earth. The problem is, our alocation of governmental and societal resources is so out of whack, that it looks like we have no money for space exploration.

As you can see, Science and Space together only account for $24 Billion - just over 6% compared to the Military Budget. Now, tell me we don't have enough resources to send a man to Mars.

These figures are kind of shocking... beyond their initial shock value. Once you dig even deeper you find how much America's government is intwined with the Military-Industrial complex.

This is the same military-industrial complex that the general-turned-president Dwight D. Eisenhower once warned us against - in the 1950s.

This just isn't a poke at my own government, but to all governments who spend an amazing amount of resources on weapons and ways to kill other human beings. Surely, this crosses political boundaries.

  4. Homosexuality is natural and there's nothing wrong with it

Using that same train of thought, being naturally born a serial killer is perfectly normal, there's nothing wrong with that. After all, its just survival of the fittest, he's more fit than the people he murders.

The major difference here, Quacker (and I'd think you'd realize this), is that victims of serial killers are (by and large) not willing participants. "Sodomy" is (in the context of this thread) an act between two consenting adults. In a religious context, this might not mean much, but in a legal/rational sense you can surely grasp the (major) difference here.

But, the state and church are seperated, so that only has bearing on marriage in church.

ABSOLUTELY UNTRUE....I find it amazing how well people are decieved about this today, but in no part of the constitution nor the amendments was this said......It came from twisting a quote from Thomas Jefferson (who didnt even mean that) and claiming it to be applicable to the First Ammendment which meant something completely different.

What about "congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion" don't you understand? This comes straight from the most relevant document. Now, what does the First Amendment say to you?

  5. Svede, what Tonto was saying about humans and survival of the fittest is absolutely true and does not conflict with Evolution. Humans, through the use of various social systems, have changed the playing field in respect to the laws of nature. There are still aspects of "survival of the fittest" going on in the world of humanity - larger countries taking resources from smaller countries; attractive, physically fit people gaining social and financial prestige; various economic systems; etc. - but in regards to the weak of society dying off as would happen in nature, that has been changed by medicine and the institutions of society. This is more the perview of sociology, than evolution, but it is related. The only contradiction here is in your mind.
