  1. I don't see how preventing Gay marriage "strengthens" hetero marriage at all! Please, someone who believes this, explain.

IMHO, it's the lifelong commitment that's the important part... and there are droves of homosexuals who wish to make this legal and emotional commitment. If only more heteros would do the same.

  2. You people wonder why there is such a backlash of hatred for your religion, but you never stop to think about how you act.

Although I disagree with the manner in which Mr. Reiland has stated his opinion, I do have to agree with the opinion itself. Some "middle of the road" people are put off by the kind of overreaction like that issued forth regarding the Janet breast reveal.

There's a culture war going on in the United States. I used to not believe it (the naivete of youth), but now I know it to be true. Unfortunately a lot of us here are on opposite sides, but what's amazing is that we can still work so well together. ^_^

  3. Why would you be embarrassed that this happened at the Super Bowl halftime and people from other countries saw it? Most other Western countries wouldn't think twice of showing a naked person in a TV ad, let alone something as benign as the breast "incident." ^_^

  4. Whatcha think about the whole thing? I'm quite amused at the uproar, myself. I see no cause for parents' and religious groups or the FCC to go ape like they are. Just my opinion.

Then, of course, the politicians circle like vultures and jump on the band wagon.

  5. Ken... I agree that such a "corporate environment" does exist. It is unfortunate, because it breeds anger, suspicion, and resentment. One time I found out that I made 2 bucks an hour LESS than the chick that was answering phones (!), even though I brought in thousands of dollars of business for the company and had years more experience than her. So, I set myself on a mission to find out all the salaries of the people I worked with (through simple conversation over a long period of time). Once finished, I typed it all up on a nice sheet of paper in an easy to read format, and posted it on the bulletin board next to the company time clock. They never did find the "culprit." ^_^

Nefarious? Yes, but my point is, corporations only exist for one thing: Profit. They do all sorts of cutesy stuff to help the community or what have you, but it's all for a positive public image, which will translate to profit. They will cheat their employees in compensation whenever possible, and it starts with the first interview, continues through the "salary negotiations," and throughout your employment of their company.

  6. Personally, I don't see why politicians get slammed by other politicians for looking at polls and following the will of the people. This is called "waffling" or "weak" by some, but to me, this is actually the way a representative democracy should work! I would much rather elect a representative that will follow the will of the people than his "own concience."

A true Democracy cannot happen in a large papulation. True Democracy is only possible in smaller communities (such as ancient Athens, whose voting population never exceeded 100,000), because of A.) The logistics of carrying out a vote on every issue with a large number of people and B.) Corruption inherent in a larger community of people and larger government. I think sometime in the future, technology might make true democracy possible and alleviate point "A." However, there will never be a way to get rid of point B in a Democratic system.

  7. I am short - well, 5'-7", which is below average in America - and as you can see, I don't use the word "vertically challenged." And I personally don't know any other short person that uses the term either. Most of the "PC" language has been blown completely out of proportion by both sides (to absurdity).

However, if a black guy ever calls me a "cracker" I just laugh in his face. I suspect there's a societal dynamic going on there to allow that to happen, but I see no need to analyze that in this particular discussion. :P Interestingly enough, "cracker" is probably NOT censored by our forum software.

  8. Condemn is a word chosen based on my belief that science is the better way to go. Hence, in my view ascribing attributes to it in order to classify it as something it is not is certainly worthy of a "negative" term.

To pervert an idea is to twist it to conform to one's own views, as Scientologists possibly have done, and as you have done in this thread.

And now you resort to mockery, without addressing the issue. You imply that my view of two types of "belief" is absurd, yet make no case to advance this view. Your "chair" mockery is a logical fallacy - yet another straw-man.

  9. Oh... took it to a friend's house... he quickly pointed out that the video card had come loose! D'OH! In a snap, he pushed the video card back in and the computer booted right up. GOSH DARN IT... oh well... it gave me an excuse to move my nice computer to the family desk so that it can be connected to the internet permanently. :(

Similar thing happened to me last summer. A lightning storm shorted the PCI slot where my audio card was... but for the life of us, my friend (same) and I couldn't figure it out and Windows wouldn't boot. After about 10 hours of trying to fix it we decided to reformat my HD and reinstall Windows, guessing that the lightning strike had corrupted my Windows installation. Well, after formatting the drive and losing 20 gigs of music, pictuires, programs, and reinstalling Windows XP (and we all know how sucky THAT little eXPerience is), it STILL wouldn't boot! BAHAHA. That's when we discovered that if we shifted the audio card down one slot everything worked fine. Oh, how I was pissed. :(

  10. With all due respect Wijit :(, science isn't supposed to be in the business of disproving anything, but rather discovery of hidden truths. It's the responsibility of the one promoting a proactive (perhaps the incorrect word) claim such as "Such and such exists," to prove it. It is not within the scientific method for this scenario to occur:

Creationist A: "God exists, now prove me wrong!"

  11. Reiland - You are setting up another false either/or scenario. Just because someone has devotion to an idea or philosophy does not mean that idea or philosophy is a religion! It's a false argument to suppose any and all devotion to something is a religion, as others have given example after example.

Again, you use Scientology to condemn science as a religion. Just because a group of people pervert an idea into a religion, doesn't mean that idea and its other believers* are religious. I can make a religion based around the rules of football and make all my followers worship the almighty pig skin, but that does not make the football sport a religion and all other football fans and players religious!

I firmly believe that if you're going to argue, do it *validly* If I see an invalid argument, I attack it, regardless of the position.

And in that, you fail yourself.

*I hold that there are two types of "belief" - "unquestioning faith" and what I like to call "confidence based on experience and/or evidence." I don't have FAITH that the sun will come up tomorrow, but based on past experience I am confident it will. I don't have FAITH in a god, because the lack of evidence makes me confident there isn't one.

  12. Just because there is a philosophy/religion called "Scientology" doesn't mean science is a religion. Religion presupposes a divine being, or higher power, for it to be a religion or faith. Anything else can be called a philosophy, or world view. An ambiguous definition from one dictionary is not the end-all of a debate. By your definition, soccer is a religion... the pursuit of freedom is a religion... because I pursue football with zeal or the cause of personal freedom throughout the world, that is my "religion"? Nonsense, and you know it, but taking your definition, out of context with the previous definitions given in that dictionary entry, those examples are religions.
