I think we can take the flames off the female heads now, can't we? What about adding them to the catapult projectiles?!
-
Great work guys. I think the smoke is too black though. I think the smoke should be grayer. Use black smoke to denote damage.

Unit promotion is one of the seminal ideas for the game. It'll be great to have it back and in the Alpha for fans to experience. The particle stuff looks awesome! Can't wait to update and see this stuff. Yeah, Amish, commit that stuff! Shore Waves would be kinda important, as would be dust for construction. Since we don't have the animating know-how and gumption to make the buildings "piece" together when being built, I think the best looking thing would be to have a big cloud of dust and the building rises up from the ground into position. EDIT: For flames we can make a series of flame sizes and types, then reuse them for different situations (like we do for other props).

I've committed a couple desert maps with tweaked lighting. See what you think. -
The voice is pretty creepy. Love it!

Shader-Based Rendering

Also, the new render method set on the lowest level completely blows out lighter textures. Is there a way to adjust the lowest setting downward? -
I'm saying only the Hellenes would have it. It's a special tech.

This being a game, it is useful to exaggerate some differences between the factions. Sure, some of the factions would have used "phalanx-like" formations, but they weren't Thee Phalanx we know from Greek history.
-
Celts and Germans aren't Orcs and Goblins, my friend. If anything, barbarian civs would have simple ladders and hand rams, while civilized factions would get siege towers, undermines, and catapults of various kinds.

You probably accidentally used Actors instead of Entities. Actors have no ownership or stats, so they "revert" to Gaia.

Alternative Combat System

If this is part of the game, then it is to be expected of the player to keep tabs on his troop morale/strength. Anyway, morale and fatigue do not factor into my proposal. This is because there is no large benefit to using formations in those games. Plus their implementation is clumsy. -

Outlines, ala AOK might be difficult. Either way, awesome work. It would be good to be able to toggle this as well (although silhouettes should be on by default). -
satchitb: Use WASD for camera movement. You will thank me.

This image really makes me think our current water textures need some updating. Any idea how Matei made the original textures? -
I played Alpha 4 again and could not duplicate. Looks like a 1-time bug.

what games do you play besides 0ad?

No other open source games, but mainly Call of Duty 4. -
The music in Alpha IV seems to be acting strange. It'll start in the middle of the song, then fade out, repeat. Anyone confirm?

The problem is that we have scant evidence (none?) that the ancients actually replanted forests.

Alternative Combat System

Well, in real life if you wound a man deep enough, even if he survives, he is out of the battle permanently. Just a two or three inch deep stab or slice into your bicep muscle would essentially take the whole arm out of commission for a long time. That's why in first-person shooters even a leg shot can count as a "kill." As for "priests" or "Healers" perhaps the minimum number of LPs is 2, and they can slowly give a soldier his LP back if he's missing one. Also, we can add a few other things like a training boost within their aura or something like that because they were essential to culture (just pulling it out of my ear). -
In AGE game I think the foundation doesn't show up until the unit approaches the spot and begins hammering. Possibly for farm fields? EDIT: I committed a farm field hack. Looks ugly, but it's the best solution for now.
-
For the farms I will make a new decal to use until we come up with a solution for the wheat stalks to conform to terrain too.

In Total War games I believe Fatigue plays a role in the Attack calculation as well. But our game does not have Fatigue, so is not a consideration. -

Thanks Erik. I think the "Top Bar" could be called the Ribbon. Eventually it'll have buttons and features in it that we don't currently have. "Ribbon" kind of reminds me of the top bar in MS Word that's also called the "Ribbon." Plus I made the graphics so it kind of resembles a ribbon. I think we should rename "civs" to "factions" instead. So, "civ icon" would become "faction icon." I originally wanted to call this the medallion, but I think we can use "medallion" for the planned Hero Medallion. Other thoughts will arise when I manage to read the whole thing. -
I'd say flatten the terrain beneath the building's <obstruction> footprint. The decals generally extend beyond this, so that they can do their business of blending the building into the surrounding terrain (which is not flattened). Long ago I actually planned for this to work that way (one of the few instances of forethought on my part, lol). This looks great so far though! Can't wait for Alpha 5 now. lol
